It is with deep regret that the Ministry of Defence has to confirm that Fusilier Russell Beeston was fatally wounded during an incident at Ali As Sharqi on 27 August 2003. Fusilier Beeston was aged 26 and was a Territorial Army soldier in 52nd Lowland Regiment (Volunteers), serving attached to the 1st Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers in Iraq. He was married and came from Govan.

The Acting Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, the King's Own Scottish Borderers, Major George Wilson said:

"Despite receiving immediate medical attention from his comrades, whilst under fire, regretfully Fusilier Russell Beeston died from his wounds. The thoughts and prayers of the Battalion are with Fusilier Beeston's family. He was a well liked and respected soldier, highly regarded by his peers. I would ask that his family and friends be allowed the opportunity to mourn his loss in private and with the dignity that befits a soldier killed on active service."

The media are requested to respect the family's privacy at this very difficult time.

Rest in Peace, amigo. My prayers for the family and buds of the trooper.

I trained with the TA (1 Wessex)in the mid/late 90's, I was told then they would not deploy outside of the UK.
