View Full Version : What makes a SEAL

I'm 15 and a sophomore in high school. My family is a navy family, my grandfather was George Edward Long, an ensign in the navy during ww2, my great grand father was John Charles Niedermair, a naval architect during ww2 who designed most of the ships used in the war. I love the navy and the ocean but I definately dont want to just be on a ship while there are men out there taking bullets. The SEALs seems perfect for me, as I love swimming, physical fitness, and acheiving seemingly impossible challenges. I am very comfortable in freezing water, I can resist pain quite well, and I love pressure and stress and having to work 100x as hard as normal to complete whatever my goal is. I never give up, I'm a team player and am mentally very prepared for anything this world may throw my way. I have read the BUD/s warning order and have been following it. I read SEAL books, play any SEAL video games I can find, SEAL posters, SEAL patches, shirts, pants, etc. I'm basically obssessed with becoming a SEAL and am extremely bored waiting to end high school and immediately join the navy. I'm hoping somebody can tell me if I sound anything like a SEAL, and if so what else can I do to prepare for BUD/s besides PT and swimming. Do the instructors actually drown you? Also, what type of SEAL units are there and does anyone know how NAVSPECWAR selects people for these units. I want to push myself to become the best of the best.

You read like a High School student who has read too many adventure books.
Finish High School. Enlist in the Navy under a SEAL/BUDS Contract. If and after you have finished BUDS you will have had all your questions answered.
And you would do me kindly if you would change your siggy line. You ain't arrived as yet.

O.k. everyone, back off.
It may be a legit question so don't attack him...yet.
Forget all the silly stuff like video games and posters and patches. That will do nothing for you to become a SEAL.
Talk to your Navy recruiter and ask to speak to a dive or SEAL motivator, he should get you in contact with him and he'll answer all your questions.
It looks like your heart is in the right place, if you maintain this level of enthusiasm and motivation AFTER you finish high school, you should do just fine.
Good luck to you. I hope it works out for you.

no i just mean since i can't join the navy yet, i do the next closest thing, whatever games i can find, and there are more seal games out there then socom. ive read everything i can find about bud/s and feel im pretty ready for it, just gotta keep to my PT and thats about it. infact i probably spend more time reading about BUD/s and SEAL workouts then i do playing SEAL games, i cant help it, i just love the idea of SEAL warfare. basically i made this thread to ask what type of unique character traits are usually found in the bud/s students that graduate.

There are responses from all services and walks of life, but you'll notice they all sound very similar, regardless of background. I wrote another long, detailed post on the same subject awhile back, but I'll have to dig around a little.

OK Kid. Glad you are interested. This is a professional site and we expect you to act as such. First question is did you read the memo at the top of this page? Next is to take that advice to heart. Shut up and listen, you might learn something. Third, we don't have time to play silly video games and we don't want to hear about your high scores. Just watch, read and be a sponge for a while. If you have a question, do a search on this site and on Google. And we really don't want to hear about your personal life, unless you have a convincing argument.

No problem. Your opinion was good.
Remember how we used to use condums on the timing device for a beach obsticle blow? Well the idea came from when my Team used to swim ashore, keeping our flint dry on our muskets.
