Here's a good example of what makes this place great:

http://www.socnetcentral.com/vb/showthread.php?t=75272

Yeah, that one is good. Serves as an example of just how small a world it really is...

Here I can catch up with people I haven't seen in years, and pick the brains of people I've never even met.

And go though a keyboard a week as some joke aways seems to catch me with a mouthfull of coffee...

Guess I should have posted here 3 or 4 years ago, but better late than never, right? Several things make this site the best I've seen on the net, hands down:

1. Respect. People treat eachother with respect, even if they disagree. Those who slip and fall into the occasional trap either man up, resolve their differences, and move on, or they're gone.

2. The mods. You guys clear out the riff-raff quickly and efficiently, and do a damn fine job of it. If it wasn't for your tireless efforts, this would be another mil.com in a heartbeat.

3. Support. People go out of their way and go above and beyond here to give advice, lend aid, and give support to people who are otherwise "complete strangers." When I mentioned my divorce, I got several supportive PM's from people I've never even met. You know who you are, and believe it is deeply appreciated.

4. The people. Some of the most intelligent, straight-talking, hilarious, and just overall "good" people I've ever associated with are on this board, and there are a lot of them all in one place. Keeps my faith in humanity alive, even if just a little. I would let most of these guys and gals crash at my place while they're in town without hesitation, and for me that's saying something.

As some posters mentioned earlier, the feeling of this place is like a barracks or berthing compartment. You're on the boat on month 4 or 5 of a shitty deployment. You're bored, tired, irritated, you feel like shit, and you would give ANYTHING just to be anywhere but where you are right now. Then you walk into the berthing lounge. Two guys are playing cribbage yelling at eachother to shut the fuck up, the new guy is getting his "berthing beatdown" in the corner, one dude is walking around with his balls hanging out saying, "Fuck, I sat in gum," and everyone else is watching a movie where a hot chick just died, having a very serious and lengthy debate about how long after the time of death they would still "hit it." Sometimes when life feels like that shitty deployment, clicking on SOCNET is like the feeling of relief and belonging when walking into that berthing compartment lounge.

I can't explain it any better than that.

Usually Im checking out the International Jobs section once in awhile about contracting jobs and usually get enough answers just reading around.

Mainly like reading about most of the crazy times you guys went through because I can compare to some of that shit and I was only a grunt. If I could go back in and step it up to a Tab I would.

Need to put a "FAKE SPEC. OPS PERSONEL" section on here with all these bullshitters online just to pick on them. Yeah Im a dick. But if you didnt earn it and taking something in that you never did then you deserve to be made an ass of.

I could not have said it better myself KSM! Your post basically ratifies what I have been thinking and feeling as I continue to read more and more of the posts on this site! You all have built a very cool place to hang out and shoot the sh*t. Lots of good info, tons of hilarity, a wicked sense of community and even a few tear-jerkers...Well done SOCNET!

And in the spirit of the oft-quoted "Read More: Post Less"...Doc out.

I was brought here by several brothers of mine, when yet another brother, a former member here, reported to Valhalla.

This site is the first one of it's kind that I have used, with excellent uptodate, well sourced articles, written by those who have real world experience.

Reconnecting with long lost bros, meeting new ones, trying to greatly enlarge the family! Great threads, tons of good info for everybody.

I also enjoy the brothers bring the heat on posers and jackasses!:D

Not sure how I missed this thread, but I will bite.
I happened in here by way of Google, like to keep abreast of our political issues, and with all that has happened since 9/11, I was tired of reading from people, speaking for those serving, so I went to get it from the horse’s mouth.
I am not a BTDT, I was your average Sailor, and proud to do my small part. Met more than a few washouts from BUD/s in the fleet, thought about it myself but decided at the time I did not have the maturity, which would add to the program, so I just stuck with what I was doing.
Since coming here I find the personalities to be straight shooters, I consider myself the same. There is a good amount of humor, which is a plus, and there are many intelligent, thought provoking posts.
Other than subjects I feel I have something to add, I stay in my lane.
Everyone may not always agree, but disagreements are discussed in an amicable way, and I enjoy that.
That is why I keep coming back, and I thank you for letting me participate

For me, it's an information stockpile. I have to admit I'm a "lurker" most of the time. But that's because most of my questions are answered it you pay attention and know what you are looking for. My second life after retiring is spent training active/guard/reserve forces and it's amazing how many of them visit SOCNET.

I joined this site long before I joined the military...I was a completely brainless kid, looking for someone who would give me all the answers. That isn't what I found, to say the least. I did, however, find a great group of guys. I've never, to my knowledge, met any of you, but I'd be more than happy to have a few beers with almost any of you.

I found this site via a google search about a website called danger zone jobs. I was researching PMC's and that particular website and google pulled up a post about that site. I was intrigued a place like this existed.

I was immediately impressed by the knowledgeable members and the degree of professionalism in the threads. The carefully worded and well organized post by members has reminded me that i have much more to learn. The amount of knowledge displayed about current events and situations in parts of the world other than America has reminded me that there is much more to see. I am at times in awe of how well traveled and well spoken some members are.

The dedication to the armed services and their members seems to be unparalleled. Being able to draw upon the knowledge of the kind of people who have accomplished so much is invaluable.

The black helicopters and the total intolerance of any assclownery is rarely found on the internet, and at times pretty damn funny.

Some of these fella's are hilarious. The one liners and the quotes could carry a person who was otherwise without personality.

The guidance and genuine advice of the members reminds me of several of the finer NCO's i have had the privilege to work for. Always willing to help you out or teach you if they can, and always willing to call you out or correct you on bullshit if you bring it to the table. Members share thoughts about what is currently being done poorly by the military and what is being done correctly. Mediocrity and laziness are not accepted.

When ever i have a bit of downtime, when my weapons are already cleaned, my gear is all pmcs'd, and ive slept enough, i find my self wanting to see whats going on at SOCNET.

I was the same as most. I stumbled onto www.specialoperations a long time back.
I actually clicked on the forums one day and started reading. Before I knew it, I was hooked like meth and was checking it everyday. I finally got around to joining not long ago.
Its the intelligence and "like-mindness" that keeps me coming back. There is a ton of useful topics and information shared here. And, its almost always good for one laugh a day.

This website is so addictive because it is one of the rare places on the internet where a discussion forum is just that, a 'discussion' forum. I have tried several different forums on topics, such as Christianity, guns, etc. and they all are full of ignorance and brain-dead people that parrot headlines or party lines when engaged on a topic.

I really enjoy the Phony SEAL Check sight where Real Deal ST guys get there props and posers get busted… I had the opportunity to exercise the use of that forum when a poser came around my kin and made the claim of being a SEAL. FROG gave me enough ammo to go back to homeboy and crush his nuts, in front of his wife. Needless to say, the phony frog claims have stopped and he don’t-come-round-here-no-mo….. Good gods I forgot about this thread. I don't know which is worse, having my threads locked and left out there to keep me in my place, or being erased so that when I come back I am stuck with a serious case of CRS! LOL

The "How not to post" threads put a smile on my face, when I need alaugh. The respect here is eveident, adn it's nice to know, that if somene says they have BTDT, it's true.
So in a nutshell, I would say the honesty of this site, is what I like the most.

This site's addicting because of the quality of brothers in attendance. It's a good place to kick back, and <hopefully> help a comrade or two. You gents (loose application of the word) are a great bunch. Hooyah to the mods for keeping it straight and providing solid operational constraints.

Addictive - naw; informative - yea.

Having been in for 24 years, out for 10 and realizing that for all the bitchin' I did while on active duty I wouldnt have missed the dance for anything in the world.

To me, this site is the bridge between warriors of the past and present. I sleep better knowing the current generation took up the mantle we handed them and carries it with the same pride we did.

Personally, I want to thank everyone past, present, and future who has or will stand up to answer the call to defend our freedom.

Because I like coming to a place where I can have a decent debate over certain things AND have the opportunity to say "Yeah, I dropped my wang into the crank huge on that one, sorry guys" if I make a mistake. And all this without being berated in public because I stand firm on a certain issue because of my beliefs. The members of the site are understanding when a person stands for what they believe in, because they also firmly believe in something they hold near and dear.

For the no BS policy regarding trolls and whatnot. The admins/mods do keep it clean, but give everyone the chance to post how they feel until they drop their wang into the crank and get way out of line.

For the humor and poking at each other. I.E. the brotherly (and sisterly) camaraderie that comes with picking on each other then buying them a beer afterwards and laughing about it. If your feelings get hurt here, you will never survive in the world.

For the advice given to those that want to chase their dreams to become SOF or military in general. The advice freely given here by the BTDTs is priceless.

Overall, for being "in like kind" with former and current military. We can relate to each other, no matter the service or nation, because the civilized world around, professional soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines are really no different than each other except for the flag they salute. We all have an understanding of life that the general public that has never served in the military cannot seem to grasp or conprehend. I tell my family all the time I have two families, my biological and the military. They have never served, so they don't understand. However, being on SOCNET, I can see my military family from the world around and see they too, have the same troubles I have.

I came here courtesy of Stephen F. of the Yahoo Special Operations War list on Yahoo. I'm a Nam era tabbed Ranger, so I don't get off to the "Let's all dump on 1st Batt" yaddie, yaddie crap.

And I'm also EOD qualified and belong to Fragweb.com.

But I digress...

Back when I was a senior in High School (Heidelberg American HS '61), Daddy was a full bull and ran the Ops shop for the USAREUR Surgeon General. And of course, he went down to Bad Tolz (this was in '60, ok?) and came back to Heidelberg with his "Official Decoder Ring" and a couple of "interesting" friends... One of whom was Col Jerry Sage.

Since I was 17 at the time, I was pressed into playing bartender. And I can remember late one night (after my folks had gone to bed) sitting on the floor and sharing a bottle of Vodka with Col Sage and I asked him about his service in WW II, and he looked me in the eye and said something to the effect of "Son, you really don't want to know! Ask your father."
"But Dad was a Doctor."
"As I said, ask your father!"

Time to crash. more to follow...

I think is because you find the kind of people you work or have worked with and their perspective.

You will no longer enter a room without looking at the environment nor drive by a road without trying to be ahead of the game. You see a package left unattended and you think about what is the worst possible content and it is just part of who you have become.

A site like this keeps you a bit sharper and may even give you a better feeling that there still people everywhere doing what it takes to keep the rest of then living in freedom.

I'm one of the non military types who enjoy reading this site and contributing on the rare chance I have knowledge on the subject at hand. I am working toward a career goal in LE and enjoy reading the old threads in the LE section, there is a ton of good info there. The PERSEC thread alone is a goldmine of information.

The most important feature, however, is the lack of BS this forum has. There is none like it on the web, in my opinion. I have to sift through so much crap on other forums to get to good information that most aren't even worth reading. There are some others that run pretty efficiently, but none like SOCNET.

The amount of experience from all walks of life that is represented here is a huge asset. Combine that with tight moderation and and you have one of the best sites on the web.

Just my spin, and the reasons I keep coming back.

This place is great; I mostly stay in the lounge, and although it seems the majority of people here are pretty conservative/libertarian/not lefties, there's still a decent number of hardcore liberals who ensure that both sides of everything going on are brought up. There's also such a wide range of experience, from lots of BTDT's and high ranking retired soldiers from US and elsewhere who I'm sure have been through all kinds of hell all the way to a couple young college students and wanna-be high speeds like myself.

There are so many professional soldiers who know everything about anything military, that anything I ever wonder about, military or weapons-related is probably somewhere on these boards.

This is also my primary source for news, and beats the hell out of reading Stars and Stripes

For me its catching a glimpse of the camaraderie that I once was part of. I also like reading what the heavyweights on this site have to say about certain topics. I like that an ass-hat can only be an ass-hat until said heavyweights show up on a particular thread.
I first started posting on this site after a family tragedy of the worst kind occurred. My wife started a blog, I started reading and eventually posting on SOCNET. Participating in this site has helped tremendously curb the pain I continue to endure from the losses of our twin baby girls.
For me the best humor on this site occurs outside of the Humor thread. I can recall one post a new-bee made that made me spit coffee on my keyboard. It went something like this..."Hey does anyone here know anyone involved in Counter-Terrorism?"
Thanks for the entertainment SOCNET!

I literally have bad dreams that involve me asking stupid questions on SOCNET threads, and then being torn apart...if that isn't addiction, I don't know what is.

 Holy Cow!!! Me too.

Two primary thoughts: the first is completely serious, and it is the kind of discussion that takes place here - an example of which is now going on about the end of our Iraq involvement.

I can't have this type of conversation with almost any civvies - 'cuz, A) I don't really give a shit about their POV; and B) because the folks here - while all living from the political Center Right to the Far Right - can have a conversation about this sort of thing and still get each other's angle.

The second is that I've only been over here for a short while, and have burned up waaaaay too much time laughing at folks get their asses handed to them for, well, deserving it.

Due to the beatings I've observed in the short time I've lurked this site, I've sworn never to:

1. post post-bourbon;

2. ask any question that I haven't paid a consultant to research first, or at least done a moderately deep search pattern on;

3. drive a 16 penny nail through my forehead prior to any thought of referring to myself as an "expert" or "SME" (I knew better before - now it just makes me sweat to think of the repercussions);

4. never post an inspirational poster that isn't original content that is funnier than shit - or deeply moving content about our boys and girls in uniform - or smokin' hot stuff that will get me kicked in the cod piece by my perfect bride

Currently, I am taking a break from the kitchen while making "sweets" for tomorrow and find myself on SOCNET yet again today. In fact, I have been off and on for most of the afternoon and evening. With that said, I have noticed that we have been running between 40 and 60 members logged on during the majority of that time frame. That speaks volumes concerning the fact that here we are on Christmas Eve and there are so many of us on this website. Seems like "family" on here. Maybe that's because it is. Can't say specifically why it is so addictive, I just know that it is. Merry Christmas everyone! Things being as they are, I'm sure I will see many of you on here tomorrow.

Too addictive. I have to ask myself before hitting "submit" if what I've written is relevant, in my own lane, professional, and respectful to all and not just a waste of bandwidth...

...like what I've just written.

Damn, it's longer than War & Peace if you read every post since it began; however, it is compelling drama and has me logging in several times per day.

The steady flow of information is a huge factor for me. Seems like there is always something going on here. My newer work schedule will now have a impact on the amount of time that I spend here. Maybe that is a good thing.

It's not hidden behind a "pay wall", and you don't have to donate $10,000 to join! (Although it would be worth every penny.)
