Just curious. There are so many people who frequent this site from such diverse backgrounds that, in many cases, have nothing to do with the military. Just wondering what it is about this site that attracts you and keeps you coming back again and again. I figure this should get some interesting replies.

Damn right. All jokes aside, I wouldn't have stayed 2 years if it weren't for that fact. I've become a better man just by viewing this web site daily. No joke. I'm a better boss. I'm a better father and husband. I've learned humility like no one else. I've seen mentoring like no where else. I've learned to shut my trap like nowhere else. Heck, you people MAKE this site. I'm just grateful I can visit. And, for that, thank you.

I learned more in this thread (http://www.socnetcentral.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31905&highlight=japanese+world+war+2) than I did all year in my 11th grade US History class.

I like to read the posts, and see the things people have to say. Some of them crack me up; some give me insights that I hadn't even considered before, and some, well, there's just no explaining why some people haven't been run over yet.

"Hey, here's a free tip for you slugs:
There will come times, when you have a minute to think, that you'll be wondering "Did I make a terrible mistake by doing this?" It usually happens at night and you'll start thinking of reasons to chuck it in. It happens when you're really tired, and confused, cold, wet and fed up.
It wasn't a mistake.

I guess I have been here awhile myself. I found this site when I was in HS and was looking at joinging the military. Well I went to college instead but still visit several times a day. I like it because this site offers many times the other side of the news, news not about " The moral degradation of todays soldier" next on CNN, but news like a US service member lost his leg, or life for his/her friend or saving some innocent kid or preforming some other act of bravery. Inspiring sort of human/military interest stories instead of this crap always on TV or in mags. You btdt certainly have a great deal more of my respect today because of this site then you ever would of without it. I am always the first to come to the defense of our troops when I hear bad mouthing on this liberal campus, also because of this site. Once in awhile a civilian like me can even pitch in his .02 and past once and while so thats cool too. Sad to see the recent rapid departure of some of the btdt's though. The veiw point here for the most part is why I keep coming back.

You're right about that. For those who don't know, it was Sneaky who gave that advice. I don't think I will ever forget it.

Much needed mentorship and a first-rate education on the military psyche for all us wannabes.

I've got several reasons.
1) ... as crazy as it sounds...it's a family. The fact that at times it does become dysfunctional (usually when a Jarhe....errrr... I mean a Marine posts), you Admins do a GREAT job at keeping it under control. You'll let us at times go a little crazy (like in the Maturity Level thread) and other times you'll let us know when to pull back.
2)....Esprit de corps.... No matter what branch of the military we were in, or what job we preformed/task we did, we all share a common bond and it's fun to come here and share our knowledge, experences, joys, sorrows, thoughts, opinions, and general BS, with like minded people and also wish to pass on that ....Esprit de Corps....to those that wish to take up the banner and drive on. I do know that those of us that post here quit a bit, have made some good friendships over something as impersonal as the World Wide Web.
3)....It's Kick ASS Site !!!!

I keep coming back because I consider many on this site to be friends, even some that I have never met.
I have met some -awesome- people as a result of this site, and I am sure that I will meet others. This site seems to attract jam up people.
Besides, this site has evolved greatly since I started visiting, and routinely hosts topics that have absolutely nothing to do with the military. Click on today's active threads, and you will see discussion about professors, dog bites, etc........ which is a strong drawing point for me. If this site were strictly military, with no other topics being allowed, then I would have left long ago.
In my opinion, military debate boards have to be flexible in order to retain members. It is only a matter of time before most all questions regarding special operations get asked and answered, especially when one considers the fact that much of the information regarding said units is off limits due to OPSEC or PERSEC. Allowing people to shoot the shit about a multitude of topics allows people to get to know each other and feel like they are part of a small "community," and that is what keeps people coming back.
I remember a time when this site became much more strict, and numerous posts were met with the reply, "What does this have to do with special operations? Thread closed." In my opinion, that was a pretty boring time to be on SOCNET. I much prefer the more "relaxed" environment that we see now.
Hell, I don't really care what the topics on this site are, I come back because I want to see what brewmonkey is up to, where in the world Poly is now, etc.................. I get a kick out of arguing with RipperTow, and I like throwing in a lib point of view just to piss people off.
In all seriousness, it isn't the quality of information that keeps me around (though that was the intial draw), it is the quality of the members.
Good luck with the site,

I can't even begin to thank all of you for what this site and the people here have done to help me achieve this goal. All I can say is that the first round is on me, and I will always strive to be the best Soldier than I can be.

Many of us who have Never Been there and Never done that check this site a several times everyday. The professionalism exhibited on here is unmatched by any other military site I have ever seen.
Also, the camaraderie between the service members here, whether they are still active duty, retired or joining is something I wanted more in a job than money.

I initially came looking for old friends, but I have stayed my short time so far because of the people. There has been something missing from my life and I finally realized it was the comraderie that I felt when I was in the Army. Hell, even the Signal Corps was better than what you find in the civilian world. This site has that feeling of comraderie about it that you won't find many places.
Also, (and this may sound silly to some) I have found myself getting back my warrior mentality just from reading and participating in the threads here. My way of thinking used to be so clear, but it has gotten muddled over the years by too much bombardment with PC bullshit and whining bedwetters trying to tell me what to think and feel. I have noticed myself being more decisive in my every day life since I started coming here. Hell, I actually bought a gun on Sunday. That's something I've been wanting to do for a long, long time but always seemed to talk myself out of it for one bullshit reason or another. I'm starting to make changes for the better in many aspects of my life.
And even without all that sentimental type stuff, there are just some funny motherfuckers here.:D

I came to this site looking for info on international SF units, made a jackass out of myself on my first post, got some sense talked into me, and found myself coming back again and again.
I guess the greatest things about this site for me is "meeting" soldiers from a very different background, where the military isn't always a consensus and hearing how they deal with the civilian world.
There are also people here who have been in combat before my daddy met my mommy, listening to their experiences, opinions and insights have made me a better man.
I also like the Zero Tolerance policy towards BS, posers and PC;)

This site has been an incredible forum in which I've learned a little more about my buddies on the "Fun Side of Post" (Ft Bragg) as well as other places.
Originally, I joined the Army and the Airborne in hopes of finding some sort of comraderie, and instead found nothing but backstabbing and stupidity. Here, I see what it was I was looking for. And while I may not be able to attain it, I at least know it's there. Somewhere in the Army, there are people willing to fight for each other. Who voluntarily step into the fray for their families and friends-- for the men next to them, who, in turn, do the same. A brotherhood that lasts beyond life and death.
Somewhere in the Army, there are people willing take the Suck and maintain Pride and Dignity, driving on despite all.
Not to mention that you guys are pretty damn funny. ;)
Your wit and wisdom entertain and teach at the same time, making this an efficient tool for me to learn, and to teach to my soldiers, in turn.
There aren't many good role models out there, anymore, so I have to search until I can find some. And I found some. So I keep coming back.. for my morale, my motivation, my own edification, and my sanity. Then I take that and pass it on to those who have to look up to me.
Pls allow me to take a minute to thank you all for everything I've mentioned: Your courage, testicular fortitude, wisdom, humour, experience, and the willingness the share it all with others.

This was precisely my first reaction when I read the thread title. I'm pleased to be pre-empted.
I came because I was considering a life as a Soldier. Though I chose not to enlist, I've visited nearly every day, and not a day passes when I do not use some small fragment of the wisdom I've read here.

The reason became abundantly clear to me last May in Al Kut, Iraq. I received a letter with a name and return address that I didn't recognize, and opened it to find that it was actually a compilation of messages from people on this site, people whom I had never met before, and many of whom that I had never even conversed with on this site. A member of this board saw mention of my battalion on the news, somehow tracked down my address, and put all of that together. I think that example just shows the kind of people who hang around this site, and make it worth hanging around.

The quality and caliber of people on the board, the multitude of topics, the reminder that I'm not the only sick bastard out there, a take on daily events and history that isn't limited to what CNN or Fox try to shove down my throat.
It constantly reminds me of, or brings to my attention, guys like Howard, Benavidez, Shughart, Sam Bird, et. al. When I'm weak, or tired, or just have some silica in my sensitive regions I'm reminded of these men and thousands more like them that I've never heard of and I shut up. FIDO.
As an aside, it is also a great diversion from work and helps me keep my sanity. Seriously. I can come in, vent, and/ or share other members' experiences. Like minded people with similar thoughts.
Besides, where else would you find BenningBound, SWAT Bricks, PoBong, rumblestrips, and "spray oven cleaner on my dick and skull fuck him"?

This site has made me a better human being. That is no shit.
(I know that sounds gay to some people, but I have learned many important things at age 34 from this site. I have learned alot from most everyone, high-speed or not.)
I am not intelligent enough to give something back to the site, but maybe my improved contributions to society will make up for it.
Great site.

1.) This board and Paratrooper.net are the two places I feel at home. Other people who, even if they don't agree with me, at least understand where I'm coming from.
2.) Information. I post when I feel I have something to add but most times I lurk. Rarely do I come here without learning something new.
3. The humor board often has some of the funniest shit I've ever read.
4.) It's good to be around people who are of good quality. It improves your own character.
5) I find a lot of motivation here. If others go that extra mile how can I do less than they.
6) This place reminds me the entire world isn't really a bunch of slack jawed, glassy eyed candy-assed liberal insults to Darwin that it can sometimes seems to be.

I came here at the request of a friend. I had no idea what I was doing when I created a user name. I hadn't even read one post (bad Princess, never even lurked). I thought it was like Amazon.com, where you create a user-name but no one ever sees it. But since I've been here a while, I've grown to rely on it in many ways.
1. It's my family here now, and I would do anything for them as they all seem ready to do for me; they are here to console my losses and celebrate my victories just like a "real" family would do.
2. I think it's addicting because even people with dysfunctional families like to keep updated on what everyone is doing. :D
3. When news breaks, I want to know what my friends here think about it.
4. It's a great outlet for me to share my patriotism.
5. But mainly, SOCNET is addicting because it's like the show "Cheers." And that needs no further explanation.
*One last thing. At SOCNET, I increase my vocabulary. "Asshat" ...my new favorite.

Pass me a beer, bro.
Wish I knew, LOL. There are some more sublime reasons that others have alluded to that I think all of us are here, but I think there's another reason this media is addictive - it never shuts down, goes to sleep, takes a vacation, etc.
Whenever you feel like hearing what everyone has to say, or throwing in your 0.02, you know there is someone out there in the ether who will chime in. It's like a barracks atmosphere that's just a keystroke away for me. You don't have to wait for the right time for all your pals to get together so you can catch up, waiting for those rare moments. It's always on at SOCNET. SOCNET never says, "Later bro, I'm busy with work," or, "busy with the wife tonight, how about next week."
Now, if only I could get real hot wings and beer to come out of the monitor, everything would be perfect.

Intel about the SpecOps/SF community. I really cannot thank you guys enough for all that you have provided me. I ship out in April and will apply all that I have learned from this site and your insights. Also, those Ranger guys keep me coming back - crazy stories and friendship among them.

1. Admiration
2. Respect
3. Professionalism
Admiration - I believe it was Sneaky that made a comparison between this board and a bar. Here, I can eavesdrop on the conversations of true heroes without getting my ass kicked. Some people admire sports stars or actors; I admire those that have served.
In college, I had a football coach who was a retired Marine Corps drill instructor. He was the best coach I ever had. I learned a lot about motivation, leadership, and hard work from him.
Respect - the internet gives people anonymity, and a few morons abuse it. This is not tolerated here and the board is well policed to keep such morons out. Additionally, most posters here try to use proper grammar and spelling.
Professionalism - as a part of one of the original "professions" (law, medicine, and the clergy), I have found that special operations soldiers hold true to the professionalism ideal (i.e. moral and ethical codes, self-policing, and high standards for admission into the profession), even more so than those of who are practicing law. Today's society uses the phrase "professional" interchangeably with "working as a ____." The meaning of professionalism is not lost here.
I could go on and on. Thank you for your service!

I don't even remember how I found this site.. I believe I found the site originally, and then stubled on to the forums. I didn't register for a very long time, just read everything... Personally, what keeps me coming back is all the BTDTs that post their experiences, the new guys that are just joining up, and the advice the BTDTs give them. I enjoy reading the "War Stories" especially ones that talk about the brotherhood and the friendship that forms between soldiers. it's also a place to say Thanks to those that serve, and have served. I've been interested in SF for a number of years, and this site has given me a much better appriciation of those brave men, and an insight into what they do.

Several reasons really. I enjoy the comraderie of my brothers in arms.
I like sick grunt humor, especially that found in the 75th Regt. threads. (Those guys crack me up daily). There's a commonality, and shared reality among most of the AD and Vets on this board , and it's refreshing to communicate with those that share my ideals, beliefs and opinions. It's also fun and educational to see the other side's take on certain issues. Basically this site represents everything I miss from my Military days, although only 4 years in duration and 20 years ago.

And as the years had gone by, i forgot how his last name was spelt. Then DFC came to the rescue and confirmed he was the real deal, and put me in touch with him. Second, i wanted to join the NSW program and was on my way. A week away from signing on the line, some drunk hobo hit me on my bike and jacked up my leg pretty bad. So that turned my plan's to just getting a reg. job. But after Sept 11th and the war on terror, how can you not be interested in the guy's who a raging the battle for this great counrty.

I first came here to do a Phony SEAL check that resulted in one hell of an ending. Neighbor just got out of the Navy, not as a SEAL; told me he was a SEAL with class number and everything, even knew specific details. Ended up, he was an IT (E-5) assigned to ST5 in support, so he knew all the stuff. T86 did the checks, then a local retired Master Chief (SEAL) who I already knew linked up with the wanna-be and busted him. Made him turn in the Trident he was sporting around with his uniform hanging up in his vehicle. So that was under a different screen name and the phony thread that went on for about 3 pages was deleted since this guy had potential to seek revenge. I have since moved.
Anyway, I was never in special ops, except for about 5 or 6 months at RIP (got hurt, went back twice more and couldn’t do it). Ended up being in a leg unit and had a good time. Went to some schools, got out and went to college. Did some contract work for an intel agency for 5 years and learned even more skills and worked with a lot of SOF types and really came to like the community. I’ve never laughed so hard, been so drunk, or had so much fun in my life than I did with these guys. Spent 5 years in a guard infantry company while in college and now I’m a civilian doing security work for an international organization.
Basically, I learn a lot of shit from this site; get a ton of laughs; and when necessary, ask some questions and get straight up no shit answers. Good guys (and gals) and some pretty funny shit. I think what got me hooked was reading posts from Battboy from Hell.

SOCNET's commitment to diversity validates my personhood and makes a bold stance against hegemonistic, phallocentric Western imperialist dogma. Oh, wait a minute . . . that's the Vegan Front forum . . . . ;)
Plus there is a strict policy of accuracy, be it IRT spelling or the minutiae of the high speed life. And I like to see jackasses get "counseled" (too bad the walls are merely virtual).

2) Because this is the only place where I can go in the world and be humbled. Even though I think I did alot in the service there are some true bona fides in here. Ive become good friends with some of them.
3) Because there are some fellas here that can shoot better than me and iam always looking to get better.
4) Because Iam aloud to speak my mind and not get shit for it because the other BTDT's understand where Iam coming from!
5) Because I like to kick ass and this is a kick ass site!!!!

I came here via suggestion from one of the other Marines on this site. I was at mil.com on the infantry board and he said to check this place out. So I did.
Why I like it? The non-pogue feel of the place. Feels like I'm back in my unit hanging with the biggest gaggle of smartassed shit-hots I've ever had the pleasure of knowing.
This is though, sometimes I feel like I have to bite my tongue simply because I don't have a buttload of posts, that I shouldn't weigh in with my opinion. Which is completely foreign to me.
Now there are guys with more know-how on here and they are great to learn from, but it's sort of weird when an enthusiast/wannabe seems to have more clout than one who's had his share of winters. Just my thoughts.
Great website, y'all keep it rolling.

When I originally found this site in 2001 I jumped into a thread that I thought was bullshit. Didn't hang out very long and left. I'm sure critics would say that this was my problem- not enough time on this site to make a proper decision. I didn't have the time I do now to read more. I'm doing that daily now. It's an awesome site.
I'm here to hear stories that remind me of the best times of my life. To share this comradery despite the fact that I now live in a PC world surrounded by people with more opinion than experience. Thanks to all who put this together and to those who maintain this site.

It's just a great place to hang out because of the people. I started a website on special ops over eight years ago. After a while, I got really burnt out; 90% of the unit profiles are all the same. While writing, "they use the MP-5" got old, the people here always keep it fresh, and there's a unique perspective here that can't be found anywhere else.
And of course, Huey's b00bs. We'll have to enshrine them if he ever changes his avatar again.

I found this site during a search for something for someone else. Started reading and got hooked. Yes, it is addictive.
In my life, I’ve been honored to know a lot of soldiers (using the generic for all the services), but I’ve been even more honored to know some Warriors. I dated an Army guy and a Navy guy, but, much as I adored them both, they were of the soldier class. Possibly my first brush with the warriors were three guys who lived across the hall from me during my senior year of college. Maybe “almost Warriors” might be a better term. My experience may not have been enough at that time to know for sure. These were three of the biggest cut ups going. But, these three had come back from Viet Nam and were obviously Different from the majority of guys in college .... even discounting the idiots who were peaceniks.
Then I met my first honest-to-God Warrior. He’d been a Green Beret in Viet Nam as an “advisor” working with the Montagnards. Didn’t talk a lot about his service – except to complain about the Marines :p . Was quiet. Loved his wife to pieces and adored his son. But there was just that Something about him. Oh, and I got some lessons in Vietnamese (think my momma would have washed my mouth out with soap if she’d known).:D
Since then, I’ve met a few more soldiers and a few Warriors. Currently a friend is Major in the NG. I haven’t seen him in action, but he has that Something. Again, quiet, loves his wife to pieces and adores his kids. I think I’m seeing a pattern here.:) He can be a big kid at times, but there are times when that Major shows up ... and it’s awesome.
If a woman is honest, while she may look at some eye candy and think some lustful thoughts, she knows that, push come to shove, when things go bad, she wants a Warrior guarding her doors. She just may want to slap those Warriors silly at times, but she knows where she has to look for that protection.
Sometimes this site is just full of Testosterone poisoning .... but that’s just the way it is when you try to edge, just a little bit, into that Warrior world.

Perspective, humor and insight. The thoughts and opinions af a man living and fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan are much more insightful and thought provoking than Dan Rather will ever be.
SOCNET is alot like a comedy club too, only the comedians are members of Mensa. I've lurked for about 2 years now without posting and I visit almost everyday. The differing opinions with thought out intelligent replies with a large dose of humor make this place intresting and addictive.

I come back here because I have a definite interest in the opinions and perspectives of the men and women that make up the United States Military, particularly the Special Operations community. A certain piece of distinctive green head gear has captivated me from the time I knew the alphabet, and here, I have an opportunity to listen to, and learn from the genuine article.
Outside of this, career information from actual professional operatives is worth its weight in gold, and its always a privilege to gain further knowledge.
Well...all of this and...few boards I have ever come across had quite the pulse or distinctive flavour this place is well noted for. Kind of like a stiff three day old cup of coffee that pours like molasses and stands to attention when ordered.

No place in the world can you find a group of people who in times of danger will sacrifice themselves for their teammate or their friend. No place in the world can you find a group of people whom will help their fellow serviceman or vet, in a time of need. The family i had when i was in The Corps. was better than the family i had growing up. As a Southerner and a country boy family is not something i take litely, the guys i served with I know I would have died for and they for likewise, I would havesuffered torture at the hands our enemies for. This kind of family, love for your brother, (not in the homo since, you sick bastards that are thinking it.) is what I miss the most. I come to this site to remember that feeling of brotherhood, and to reastablish ties with the best family ive ever had.

While ruminating over this thread and the time I have spent here posting thoughts, concurring others, administering a virtual waffle stomp or just plain cutting it up, I am always reminded that this little slice of heaven is inhabited by some of the most intelligent and motivated people on gods green acre.
I am not a member of the SOF community and made sure to post that in my profile, but, I am a member of a brotherhood that exists, of warriors that have raised their right hand of their own free will and serve a nation that is indeed "The Land of the Free and Home of the Brave."
There have been a few times over the past year that I am extremely proud of what I have accomplished, whom I have met through PM's and over the phone. Not to mention the invites to KC (You crazy Bastiges know who you are!) and the missed invites to a beer while traveling. I am able to convey these events privately or in the clear for all to see and one thing remains the same. No matter what background in the military you are from, SOCNET welcomes views and opines for the most part from all. This BB is one of the most professional, well rounded and informative places on the WWW.
As others have stated, Terry and Cass among the first, it is a home to come to where others of a like mindset and lifestyle reside. I am respectful of the fact that the "Evil One" hasn't banned my sometimes irreverent behind yet, but that is just my opinion on the current subject, but like his name entails, he just circles when blood hits the water.
Finally, I'd like to add as to how my opening experience on SOCNET. Thank you to Doogie and TR for the PM's. Primarily, Sir, I want to thank you for leading the way. I read EVERYTHING you posted and took it with a grain of salt. I for the most part don't post a thing w/o thinking of the repercussions over my statements. Doogie, Stud, you have me in stitches in just about every post and thanks for the "Lessons Learned."

A lady from a reading group recommended this site when the conflict was heating up and my 17-year-old son had a decision to make. For his own reasons, my son chose to not join the military. My youngest son has asthma and will never qualify physically to serve. So, why did I stay? There are so many reasons. Here are a few, in no particular order:
1) My best friend, bar none, was found here. Thanks, Donna.
2) There are some wonderful people here, a few of which I had the privilege of meeting personally.
3) This community motivates me to think.
4) Information I found here helped my friend's son make a more informed decision regarding his enlistment.
5) Real questions get real answers.
Terry and Cass, you two are giants in my book. A few others are standing closely in your shadows. The "Respect 101...Your Perspective" and similar character threads were enlightening.
What other message board in the world teaches you so much about military brotherhood, character, humor, and even shares some great recipes on occasion. There is nothing like SOCNET.

Wow great thread! As a civilian I sincerely feel it is an honor to be among the men and women I consider to be some of America's finest...my true heroes...and it is awesome to be able to interact with you and to feel accepted.
Even as an outsider when I read the threads in certain forums the sense of Brotherhood is extreme and palpable and I like it. I love reading the taunts, teasing and "bashing between Brothers" done with humor and love. I love the flames. I love reading the words written with emotion by those of you serving or BTDT as you talk about some of the things you have done. It is a privilege really.
I really love the "I miss it" thread started by Reaper375...that has to be one of my all time favorites, allowing myself and the rest of us civvies a small glimpse into your minds. I love this site for so many reasons, a sense of family would be another one of the biggies. The sacred memorials to those that give all....well those make me cry.
I've made some good friends here, and best of all...I've found my one and only. The fact of the matter is that there is a sense of unity here that is comfortable. When I have a "bad day" I know I can come here and get a laugh...or put things into perspective in ways that many other civvies just "don't get". SOCnet is like home.
And finally...I love to come here and get Panda in trouble. :D:D:D

I must admit I haven't read much of this thread except the initial post. Regarding the topic of this thread There are many reasons why I come back, when I first came here E8H taught me something, Attention to detail. He tought me how to represent my self properly on the internet.
Another reason why I come back is because of the Professionalism that comes from the BTDTs. I enjoy reading what they have to say and I enjoy learning more about something I would like to do coming from people who have done it.
I guess you could say I keep coming back to this site because I find people I can look up to, for their physical as well as mental prowless. It is hard to explain why I keep coming back, but now that I am 17 you may be hearing more from me. I doubt that I will get any response to this post but I value greatly the words of the people on this site, everyone of them.

I have known about this site for about near 2 years, but after starting out with a moron type comment i never came back only reading the occasional post. After getting back into contact with Cass, he started me out on quite a journey of fulfilling my dreams, giving me encouragement when i needed it, advice on all the problems and questions that i dared to ask, and a better understanding on life in general. I've told him this before, what i read on here has helped me in every aspect of life, i have a better understanding of what is going on in the real world thanks to this site. I read more then i post now not seeing a need to give my own opinion, even when there are times when i'd really like too. Cass thank you again for everything you have done for me, every small word of advice and encouragement you have ever given will always be remembered and kept true to heart. And of course to everyone else on here, this site is made up of different people in everyway, but everyone does his/her part to make it a special place to visit. To me its more then an internet website, it a place of wisdom and encouragement, and place to get great advice and a place to laugh your ass off, and certainly a place to sometimes get angry and mad. All of this combined make this sort of a home, with a great family. Thank you all for your part and role in this great family.

I made some "virtual" friends here (e.g. RLK, Specwarnet), and get lots of interesting information for my studies, my model-building projects or just my military interests.
I also have the slight hope to improve my english...

I was looking up information on Miami-Dade SRT. One of the links led to a personal statement from a former Navy SEAL and Miami-Dade SRT team member. Near the bottom of the page was a link to SOCNET. The rest, as they say, is history. I lurked for several months before getting the nerve to even register. Initially, the attraction was to log in and anonymously read what others posted. Some of it hilarious, other posts insightful.
Then “my oldest” dropped the bomb on the family--he had signed up to be a Marine. I blindly supported him because I believed it to be the right thing but most importantly because it was his first “adult” decision. He showed the initiative by signing up all on his own; it was only after he had failed his physical (asthma) that he informed the family. His birth mother and father were horrified, and I, as always, the lone dissenter. During this time, SOCNET was an invaluable source of information that I was able to pass on to him. Huge “Thank You’s” to SGTROCK and ussfpa for their advice.
His dream to join the military didn’t happen but his motivation is still there. Accepting the second rejection has made him adapt his plans -- stay in school and get an IT degree, currently studying Modern Arabic and Mandarin Chinese and is thinking Counter-terrorism at home.
But why SOCNET, real views on what is happening. Real answers to questions not politically correct ones. To all, thank you for allowing me to visit in your home.

Hi there...
My name is Reaper, and I'm a recovering SOCNET-a-holic.
It started with an invite by Sharky. Then it grew to several sessions a day. Pretty soon, I found myself on here at work, and home alone.
Before I knew it, I got the shakes pretty bad if I didn't log on, and I felt the need to post something, ANYTHING... whenever I was on.
I guess I knew I had a problem when I invited my illiterate Jarhead Brother here, and when I met a group of like-minded freaks in the Shenandoah Mountains. From there, I realized that they liked to add alcohol to the mix, and I realized even more that I LIKED it.
Well, enough was enough, and I had to figure out a way to "wean" myself off. SO, I started the long hard road to recovery. First, I blew up my computer. Then, I logged myself off my work one. It was tough, but I did it.
Now, I'm a Social SOCNET'ter... and I can quit anytime. Seriously. I can.

1. A source of info and experience that I can tap into, but I'll never be able to match. And interesting discussions.
2. Many people with their head on straight.
3. Some things are just too funny. (Like that Ranger Hog thing)
4. The camaraderie I see, and why most civvies will never understand it.

I came across SOCnet doing research. I read for several months, finally joined and lurked, and might have stayed a lurker if lucid hadn't made me so mad. My husband was deployed, and you all helped me to get through some tough times. Some of the posts sounded like they came straight from my husband's mouth, and that made me miss him a little less.
I stayed because of the friends I have made here. It is like a neighborhood bar, but we come from all over the world. It's a place where we're welcome to come in, have a drink, and discuss the day's events. A place to help and be helped.
And it's fun to watch the bouncers in action. ;)

SOCNet is just such a great place to go to learn about the military and its lifestyle. I'm just a high school kid, so I'm trying to learn more about the service before I can enter. Aside from my recruiter, all of my questions have been answered from either SpecialOperations.com or a discussion on SOCNet.
Surprisingly, I like the fact that topics aren't purged after about two weeks, which is the case on some other forums I visit. It's nice and, in my mind, neat to be able to search for something and find a 4-year old post that answers your question :D
I enjoy reading the posts exchanged jokingly between BTDT's... knowing that there's probably some sort of inside joke that I wouldn't get, yet I still find the sense of humor on this site fantastic. It's cool to see people with a great amount of pride in their branch of service.
The fact that this is the most straightfoward forum I've ever seen. If some guy is being a dick he's gone. On other sites there's some lame 'karma' system where naughty posters get points deducted. As in the cases of numerous other non-creds, this place has given me a new sense of humility.

I initially found this site when my husband was deploying over seas for the first time. It helped me greatly during that lonely time. Since then, I have found this site a great source of inspiriation and motavation. I have learnt a great deal about the true meaning of the words 'never give up'.
In my profession, (medical research), the saying 'never give up' is needed every single day, especially on those days when you are so damm confused about your data and what it means that you can't see the light at the end of the tunel. This site reminds me that you know the solution is there and gives me the belief that if you just keep pushing you will eventually get to that solution.
Thankyou all,

- The awesome respect amongst the BTDTs, along with the respect and welcome extended to newbies (who have the sense to tread lightly)
-The humor when those wannabes pop out from behind cover
...and most importantly (to me) the knowledge and willingness to help, just as I've experienced in face to face contacts with military spec ops and SWATCops.
Plain and simple, just a great site, thanks for the privilege of hanging around.

Wow good question.
I came to SOCNET at the prompting of one of the BTDT's, who shall remain nameless so he doesn't get blamed for any bonehead comment I might make. He asked me to check out SOCNET, after he had read my ramblings on another BB and thought my posts had merit.
I came over to check things out when the Camp Rudder (http://www.socnetcentral.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21494&highlight=Camp+Rudder) thread was in full swing. My first thought, "AW! HECK NO!" Reaper375 and BBFH sacred the bejeepers.
Brief side note: Little did I know what teddy bears those two would turn out to be. ;)
I was scared to death to post much of anything, but at the prompting of this good friend I came back a month later and started reading, and subsequently posting, on a daily basis. Low and behold in a few months, I had made several very good friends here, and met my future husband by fighting with him on SOCNET.

This place is a great home for all of us who have the opportunity to get online. There are tons of people who have tons of knowledge and can even help you make decisions. When I first came here, I stepped on my dick and after that understood what it meant to hang around and familiarize yourself with the AO before posting. Now I stay in the 75th Forum, because I feel most at home there, and it almost seems that every week one of my old ranger buddies signs in. That and we can all have a good serious conversation in our 75th threads- did I just write that?
On a serious note, this is the place to be.
I am about to head out to the sandbox and I am glad that every last PM I sent out was answered and all offered great advice.

I stumbled over this site a few years ago and I am so glad
I did.
This site is unique. I think I come back so often because the
members of SOCNET provide a dose of reality.
While there are differences of opinion, there is one constant.
Respect and admiration for all those that have served and
currently serve in the Military. I think I come back specifically
for that reason alone.
Thanks for a great site.

I've always had an interest in the military and military history as I was an Air Force brat, but after a time I found out that one of my Uncles was a Vietnam Vet and that other relatives had served in both Great Wars (both deceased). These things are what lead me too the site, but the humor, knowledge and feeling of community is whats kept me coming back every day for the last year or two. Thanks to all the active and past service members on this site for the sacrifices you've made and to the Administrators of this site for your no BS approach.

I have thought very intensively about why the site is so very addictive to me. And I have also read everyone else's response. In forming my response, I really thought about how attached I was to the site, especially considering how many post's I've made.
I will try to put it in a nutshell without sounding like the site's whiney biatch... In my life, I have always had a very aggresive personality, being somewhat a hard charger and working hard whether it was during my tenure at Hurlburt Fld. in the Air Force or throughout my career in Law Enforcement. When I became sick with Muktiple Systems Atrophy a very rapid acting Parkinsonian Disease, it was as if my entire life was taken away...
And as the disease has become worse, I have become increasingly homebound and the last thing I have to hold onto is my ability to communicate with those who have similar thoughts, goals, backrounds and ideals. My idea's are challenged and my mind given opportunity to work and study on something of some import. Something's that mean much to me.
Oddly enough, as close as the communities of the Police and Military world are, one's friends still come by. The guy's still visit from time to time, but those visit's are not quite the same and you are never quite one of the guys anymore. On here, no one see's the wheelchair and aside from the times that I have made an ignorant post when I've been very sick, people don't pay attention to that fact. So, all said it is so very addictive because in some small way, however small, I can have that one little piece of my life back despite what this disease is doing to me... I have something left.
Now I hope that didn't sound ridiculous, but it's what I like and appreciate about here. The other thing, equally important to me as any other that I should mention is that I have learned that the "KC Crew" of SOCNET is without doubt the most phenomenal group of guys I have had the honor of sharing a birthday with,
Godspeed,
usaftacp
**As a side note for those who don't know, my disease is service connected and though terminal, it has proven to be the greatest gift I have ever been given. A chance to recognize my life and finish before the curtain was drawn.

My name is Hybrid and i'm 19 yo (I know, still wet behind the ears) and I live in the Netherlands. I've been reading here for a couple of months.
Currently I'm in college and I have a part time job as a fitnessinstructor. After i finished college I'm planning to join the Marine corps or the corps commando troops. But my main concern at this moment is finishing college.
The reason I keep coming back is mainly the fact that i keep learning new things, learn to see things in their perspective, start to see things from an other viewpoint. And almost everything mentioned previous to my post.
I filled out my profile as much as i could. If anything is missing please let me know.
Thank you,

I found this site while looking for info on SOF's. As I am a huge military history buff, unfortunately my plans to join up were nullified by a very nasty mtn. biking accident in which I tore my ACL, MCL, and miniscus. After two operations on the knee and a year of physical therepy I found out that knee surgery is a disqualifying factor in WOFT.
But I digress, I found the info I was originally looking for and decided I liked what I saw as far as quality of the posters here and the fact that it is not a site filled with 12 year-olds. So I decided to become a lurker here. It is one of the most informative and amusing sites I have found. I actually lurked for over a year before I even registered, and this is now my first post.
I would like to thank all the BTDT's for there service to our country and could only wish I had that opportunity. Also much thanks to everyone on this site for countless hours of entertainment and reams of information.

What a great read this has been. Speaking on behalf of all of the admins, we appreciate it. But, you guys are what makes the site what it is. Now, on to an issue that I feel I need to clarify a bit.
It isn't necessary to lurk here for a year prior to posting. This lounge forum was created for open discussion and it's open to all. Healthy debate is encouraged. Just realize that the majority of the people here tend to be more conservative minded.
We tend to be a little more strict about the unit forums, as those forums belong to the guys who served in that unit. You can post there but remember that you are a guest in that forum and you should act like it.
As for me......why do I keep coming back?
Because one time we had a little SOCNET get together. I was fresh out of a divorce and this weekend gig was halfway across the country. I was pretty close to broke thanks to my ex-wife and could not afford a plane ticket. I used the excuse of not being able to get off work, but someone knew better. That someone offered to get me a ticket by cashing in some frequent flyer miles so I could attend. He stayed on my case about it for weeks until I relented. The person who provided that ticket had a last minute scheduling conflict and couldn't even go himself. When I got back and unpacked my suitcase I looked at my ticket stubs and realized that they had been paid for by American Express, not frequent flyer miles. This was done by a brother Ranger who had never even met me face to face. We weren't even in the same battalion. We met on this site.
Then there was someone else who found out that I was driving cross-country with my girlfriend and her two cats. He insisted that I stay overnight at his home with him and his wife. I accepted. His wife asked him how he knew me. He told her he didn't. My girlfriend asked the same question and got the same answer. They were both horrified that we would all be sleeping under the same roof and had never even met face to face. We had only known each other on SOCNET. We tried to explain and eventually I think maybe they kinda got it. See, I was a Ranger and this guy was from TF160. And that's all we needed to know about each other. To us, we were brothers, not strangers. We had a great time and the girls are now good friends. That guy makes a mean burger at 1:00 am.
Then there was the time where I quit my job to take a new and different job. I had to leave and start work in a new town before I could even sell my house. Making house payments, fixing the place up to sell, and renting an apartment in a new town was going to barely be doable, if at all. Another guy, whom I had only met once briefly, other than here on SOCNET, offered me his sons bedroom to live in until I could get my house sold. I wound up being there for about five months living with him, his amazing wife, and three wonderful kids. To this day he has never accepted a dime that I tried to pay him for letting me stay there.
That's the kind of people found on this site, and it's why I keep coming back. It's a special place with a lot of special people.

The truly astonishing part of your post, Sharky, is that although you highlighted the actions of 3 members here, those types of actions are likely from 99% of the members here. To guess which 3 is irrelevant - everyone here fits the mold.
That pretty much sums up the addiction: being surrounded by like-minded, decent people.

I came here at first to find the answer to a question. It was one of those questions that immediately raise everyone here's hackles. Yup, I got blasted for it (by the Sharkmeister no less). Just the replies in that thread told me this was where I wanted to lay my woobie. I'm sick of the PC world and corporate mentality in everything. This site is the one place I know that I can go and be assured that I will hear it like it is. So I kept coming back.
Then I decided I'd go to this little get together. I went and got there at 0 dark 30 and the first two lines I heard were "who the fuck are you?" and "I don't care who you are, come give me a hug". You see, those two lines personified this whole site for me. The members here are as much a family as the active military is, probably more so. This site is extremely selective about who they let in, but once they let someone in, it's closer than a family. The acts of kindness and brotherhood toward each other that occur on a daily basis here are unfathomable to those that have never experienced it firsthand. I daresay that even those that have been military, but in CS or CSS jobs would have a hard time understanding what it's like. Words just can't describe it.

I first came here looking for a PSYOP or CA unit close to my home then I started asking more questions about it and lurking. I asked for help with my EPSQ and security clearance paperwork and recieved many helpful answers along the way. I lurked after that so I wouldnt get flamed. I also did a search on Magician posts and found the GREATEST piece of information on foot care which I have implimented into my life. I also found other information within his posts that I have not forgotten.
I stayed because of the type of people here. After going to the Chat room a few times and reading a few stories on here, I knew I was dealing with a great bunch of people. The story that sticks out in my mind is when Reaper375 found out from a neighbor that a WWII Ranger was in the hospital, and in bad shape. He drove there, spent time with the man, recited the Ranger creed and presented him with one of his old Black Beret. There were many stories that I read here that were on this level which is no doubt why the people here are attract others to this site.
This is a great site.

Living in NYC, there aren't that many military types to shoot the shit with and the ones I do run into weren't very high speed. My immediate friends and family know very little about the military. In fact, when I was first dating my wife she thought I was a helicopter pilot when I was in the Army because that's what she thought Airborne meant.
I found this site a couple of years ago and I first started answering questions on the LRS/LRRP thread, which is no more. After I found that most of the guys surfing this board were other vets and active duty guys (with a few gonnabes asking respectful questions) I was hooked. Let's face it, some of the best stories about some of the funniest shit that happened in our lives was in the service, both training and deployment. I'm here to swap stories and shoot the shit with other people that get it. I just recently, right after the new year, got in touch by phone with two buddies from my team that I hadn't spoken to in almost ten years. We were catching up and just laughing our asses off for hours recounting old stories. This site is a little bit like that sometimes.

Well lets see, I started here either in high school or right after I got a GED because of my interest in joining the Marines. I followed the advice and STFU for the most part only asking the questions I needed too.
Everyone here treated me well because I knew the rules and was trying my hardest to not be a dumbass. Got to infantry school and had a lot of fun until I got injured. Right about then I developed a case of the stupids and let the Marines kick me out. The people here knew what I had done and called me on it. I took it personal at the time but realized later as I healed that I had screwed the pooch. I'm fully recovered now and because of the people on here I have pushed myself to a higher level of fitness. (6 mile runs and 3 mile ones with packs on)
I was still tolerated here for reasons I can't begin to understand considering my behavior and for that I thank everyone who was around then. I continued to get help in other subjects like when I took my EMT. Now it looks like I'll hopefully get hired with Denver as a firefighter and will be trying to go Army Reserve as a medic.
I stay because the people here never let me down even when I let down myself. I figure they gave me that dedication and I should give it back.
All I have to say is, I thank every last one of you.

I stay here because sometimes, when life is dark and cold, and you feel all alone in Hell, you know that Brave Men & Women here on SOCNET have Been There, Done That, and know how to navigate through.

I enjoy this site more that I do at others...simply because there are good info, humorous stories, and just the sheer facts that maybe I dont' know anyone here by face, just the fact that my questions are always answered; and kind words are typed my way. The reason i came here and still come here. The people! Had two offers from BTDT's to call my recruiter before I joined. I took one up on it, to help ensure I got the contract I wanted and didnt get screwed. The other was going to tear my recruiter a new asshole over the phone so I passed at the time...
Had a few users who I believe are gone now (banned?) that sent me care packages in the stan. Didnt know who they were or where they were from or anything, but it sure was nice. Met Rsov and Medic, been more then helpful in anything ive needed and from the talks and reactions Ive gotten. Id assume anyone else I ran into would do the same down in the lower 48. Advice has been more then plentiful and the humor is constant.
After a few years lurking and a few posting totaling over 8 years at least, I overcame being a civi and beating my problems to enlist, after enlistment I made a good go of what I signed up for, finished a combat tour, and have now become an NCO to teach and lead the next wave of Soldiers. A lot of it I contribute to the men and women here and their encouragement and advice.
Thanks to all for everything you have done whether you realize it or not.

At first I came for information from another website. While reading the warnings and such I ended up in FAQ. There I found the I miss it thread.
You guys who have been there done that are my role-models my heroes. I come for your thoughts oppinions and humor.
When my life is over I can only hope that I have been blessed enough to be half the man you guys here have, and that my life has motivated someone enough to get the respect from them that you men have from me.
Also for the things I've learned, like using proper grammar as a way of showing respect. I know my grammar sucks but I strive to improve it everyday. As I do every aspect of my life.
I also like the no bullshit attitude on SOCNET if you step out of line you get dealt with properly. I have been to other furums where the main purpose is to flame the new guy and see who can chase him off first.
I'm very thankful for being allowed into your world. I also hope that I have never stepped out of line and hope that I do not.

1) the knowledge. I've realized I don't know everything, but there is someone here who knows (and has probably already posted it, I just have to use the search button).
2) the laughs.
3) watching people who don't know what they're talking about get smacked down. Okay, that's really the same as reason #2. :)

Hey all. I am glad to see this thread resurrected, because I should have posted on it a long time ago.
I'm here for several reasons. First and foremost I joined because two of mine became two of yours. A few of you guys have served with them. I wanted to find out more about the lives they lead and the experiences they've had in becoming a BTDT.
What I came away with was so much more. I learned about all kinds of topics from first hand speakers that I could never read in books. I got to talk to wise and intelligent people from all over the country and all around the world. The humor is incomparable; I have lost count of how many times I laughed so hard until I cried and my stomach hurt. I got to see real live intelligent debate on interesting and controversial topics, where the debaters strongly disagree, but keep the discussion civil and respectful. I got to see into the window of a world that I would have done anything to have been a part of, but could not.
I like how posers are outed and BS artists are chased off. I absolutely hate phony people and appreciate how little tolerance there is for them here. One of the esteemed members here recently told me, "You know, they hate SOCNET!" And I replied, "FUCK YEAH! That means that SOCNET gets respect." One of the best things about being here is that the members of this board would rather be respected than liked.
And most importantly I got to meet in person some of the finest men and women that I have ever met in my life. I am looking forward to meeting so many of you in person that I have only corresponded with on this board. I hope that I can always be there for all of you-- Although you have caused enough liver deterioration that it is now useless to donate so forget about that! (Why am I thinking about Dr. Doom practicing his surgery on the "Operation!" game now:D)
Thanks for allowing me to be a part of this group. Thanks RAT for everything. I am gonna miss having you in this AO.

Oustanding thread.
I initially came here looking for answers to some technical questions because I figured the greatest knowledge base concerning military matters would be a collection of current and former NCOs, which is effectively what's going on here. I was right to come here for information, but what I didn't count on was that the people here are not just well-informed and experienced but are engaging, entertaining, and just plain interesting in a very straightforward way.
My own military experience doesn't dovetail with the ranger/sf/recon mold, but the mindset of being part of an elite within an elite is the same, with the result that many similarities arise in general outlook on life, sense of humor, etc. that are rare in both the civilian world and much of the rest of the military, so stopping in here for a few minutes each day is a mental and emotional treat to be looked forward to.
I've never met anyone else on these boards, and am unlikely to ever do so, yet there is a sense of community here that transcends the physical separation. In short, as many others have stated already, the attraction is the people.
Keep up the good work, mods! You are appreciated more than you are praised.

For me having good people like Sharky, Guy, Ace, Scotty, Magician, IMUA, Frog, Trident 86, Ranger Manges, Mk19, Xdeth, DY, Dark Helmet, Mav and family, and TR.
For those of who that dont know, some time ago I needed assistance on business adventures and I remember Guy hauling ass across the Carolinas to drop off body armor to a SERE buddy of mine to who was flying out to my location. I was going to Afghanistan from Qatar. Saved my ass'
Then I can recall Scotty, squaring me and some of my budds with the STOMP bag before redeploying. He got me the bag I needed and then we tested it from a HELO at MOTT Lake. Again squaring me away.
I can recall needed med supplies I couldnt get and DY sending me a bunch of his own shit to square me away.
Sharky for his sound advice, Ranger Manges for holding me up to the Ranger Creed, Magician for his advice on my condition and of course Jeff for having this site that we all can stay connected.
This is the reason why I come back, because these are examples of taking care of your buddy, mentor them, never let them fall by the wayside.

I first came here to find out some information about crossing over into another field. After being brand new and reading the all the posts regarding my interest ( and after hitting the search button, I found what I was looking for) I started to cruise through the other threads. After that I was hooked, just like a crack head on 149 and the Grand Concourse. What amazed me was the help / advice I received from members from all the branches of service.
When I was scared shitless about being hit with Recruiting Orders, I was PMed by a member asking if I wanted a hookup to get to BRC. (appreciated that Doc, and if all goes as planned I will be going that route here in a few months)
Before going back for another trip to the sandbox, I hit up the Medical threads and the lessons learned from the docs on the site really help me and my guys in OIF2. I especially dug the threads that SneakySFDude would start to make your grey matter work.
While in the box I came across many IC's and the lure of more money caught me just like Im sure it caught many service members. Once again a member on this board broke it down barney style and let me know the good and the bad of that type of work. (decided to stay in).
Addicting? Now that Im away from the fleet, dont have anyone to train and not scheduled to redeploy for awhile, all I do now is PT and go on Socnet.
Just like it was said before, its like being in the barracks (except forthe fact that yall dont have any dog tag whores hanging around in the lounge and puke on the steps on Thur, Fri, sat, and Sun.) But its all good anyway....You can't find this many good to go people in one place if you looked your entire life..

I found myself here as a result of a google search on Mr. Kain's MOS or unit or something. Within a few days, I had the pleasure of meeting a couple of the members in person. Very sweet guys!
I love being in the presence of military people, but I also feel a bit like "the new kid" even though we have been doing this for a few years now. We don't live near a base, so I feel quite isolated in my situation. I have nothing to compare our experience to, no where really to go for familiarity.
I was on a military wives site for a while during last deployment, but it eventually became more of a drag than it was helpful, so I quit going there. I prefer learning the life & perspective of soldiers themselves, so that I can better understand & support my husband. That's what it's really all about anyway.
It seems this is a good place to gain some insight. Hopefully it won't just be a one way street... I hope I might have something to offer at some point as well.

Throw that in with on-demand low-ball humor, insider put downs, and "are you hot" type cliches, and you've got winner.

I recently started talking to a recruiter, and have thought to myself several times just how ignorant I would be without this site. The amount of knowledge available here is incredible, and keeps me coming back for info on a lot more than just the military.

Why is this site so addictive? The people on the boards. I first found my way to this site because I needed help and answers. I stayed because I found that I have many of the same interests and the same sick sense of humor as a good number of people here. I know I'm new and nobody knows me yet. I hope you all get to know me.
Oh, thanks to the nice man that I had my very first PM with, it was to ask me if I was "HOTT".
And thanks once more to the 2 nice men that helped me with my problem and patiently answered all my stupid questions, they know who they are, princes among men for caring...

Dangit... sorry about that! Bravo, behave yourself! :p
Personally, I come here because of all the hot guys. ;) And the fact that they have above-average intelligence doesn't hurt, either. Hmm.. come to think of it, maybe that's the reason I come back to this site. Even so, there's one who can't spell... but we love him anyway. :D

I've only been here at SOCNET for a short while and yet I've made friends.
9/11 was a turning point for me (like other people I'm sure) and was fed up with all the political correctness I felt myself drowning in. SOCNET is a wonderful place to share your pride in being an American. I haven't felt that pride in a long time.
SOCNETers are the most informed group of people going, in my book, and I hope to be here for as long as I'm allowed. I love reading the posts on current famous and infamous political figures, what's happening in Iraq from the soldiers over there as well as how the wives deal with their deployments. Sometimes I feel like I'm getting the 'inside scoop' and it's a real charge of adrenaline! Hey, I'm a simple person but I know quality people when I meet them!
Thanx

I love this website. Without this website, no thorough comparison of the attributes of pirates and ninjas could be made. It completes my world.

How did I miss this thread? Twice.
I came here because Sharky invited me over from military.com (and I will be eternally grateful for that).
What I found was a place with real vets and members of the Spec-Ops community, without having to individually sort the few real deals from massive numbers of bs artists.
And made more than a few friends, a number of which I have met.
This place keeps me sane sometimes (well, as sane as I can be).

I think that this forum is well moderated and policed by both the administrators and the regular members.
I like the fact that it is kept on a higher plain than alot of other forums that I have seen and that people are taken on when they make blanket and hysterical statements. The fact that idiots are banned has made this forum better than others.
I have learned alot from the members here and find that a good majority of them are well educated, well versed and highly intelligent and have a wide range of experience in many fields.

I come here cuz I can usually get pretty good advice. I also can ask any number of people for help and even though they do not know me or havnt ever met me I still get help. Even though a particular User is no longer apart of this site, I gave him a call when I flew into LA to pick up my truck after ETSing, he had a busy schedule but made time to pick myself and my buddy up, find and take us to the depot where my truck was stored at and expected absolutely nothing in return. Pretty much a complete stranger other than a few posts read here and there online.
Another buddy from this site who I dont know, never served with etc... Made sure he called my recruiter and made sure my deal was legit. That they werent trying to swindle me into a contract other than what I was looking for.
Been here 7 years as a member and about 2-3 before that unregistered as a lurker. almost 10ish years here now. Went from High school, to basic training, to PLDC, ETS'd, and now back in the Nasty Guard trying to find a place to call home.
I still lurk and gather more info then post. I remain that gray man.
That and the sites got a real user friendly use-ability about it, compared to a lot of other site Ive seen. Mostly well moderated and posers are outed and gone!

How did I miss this thread? Twice.
Because way the fuck back in 2005 (Christ, that long ago?) you saw my name next to the thread and figured it was something brilliantly intelligent and well-thought through and that you would still likely disagree with (in principle) and you were in a good mood that day (for once) and you didn't want to ruin it by having to strain your mind to think of a counter response so you just blew the whole thing off and ignored it. :D

I'd have to say that besides the previous reasons that have been stated, I am addicted because I like to know that people like SPC Muncy (http://www.socnetcentral.com/vb/showthread.php?t=61784&page=3) (TACSAT) and nclester (http://www.socnetcentral.com/vb/showthread.php?t=74549)get exactly what they need here:D . And had it not been for Paranuts I'd probably just be another crummy civilian again:eek:

I came here originally to get info on a career in NSW. I was off the board for awhile and then when it looked like I was finally going to get my shot I came back to read up. I stayed because this is by the far the most intelligent, professional, funny as fuck website out there. The quality of the members here is truly humbling.

I am new to this site but so far have enjoyed the fact that there is excellent vetting that takes place here. I get to keep up with brethren with whom I have served with and have also met some outstanding mentors who really have BTDT before my time in SF. This is a great site to continue to share thoughts, ideas, learn something new and just share some stories with old and new buds. Most of all, there is a professional tone here unlike other sites I have seen. On this board, things are kept in check and the immaturity is swiftly dealt with. All positive in my book.
Thanks....JM

My reason for joining was to network in the hopes of finding employment. It has become so much more in a very short time.
I am in awe of the wealth of experience (practical and intellectual).
The cameraderie. The fact that there is no mercy at times. The humour, sarcasm and irony.
Many posts have helped me define or re-define my point of view.

As a future soldier, I've found a lot of good info on here. May have made an ass of myself once or twice at first.... But lurking the past few months has given me a solid heads up as to what I can look forward to in the Army and I appreciate that a lot!
Beyond the info, there is a lot of stuff here that is just plain entertaining as hell. Looking forward to more on this site until I ship to BCT in June, and maybe some posting later on after AIT and Jump School.

I enjoy it, as it is like the good ole days, sitting around the TH or barracks, but not having to smell the after effects that days of eating only MREs has on the digestive system of your team mates. :)
Plus, it goes with any schedule, and you can come here any time.
And... Where else can you find KidA, and talk about blowing up squirrels?

I came here, if I remember right (and at my age that's never a given) because Greenhat invited me, having conversed with me on another site. I like it because of all of the above-stated stuff, plus it's one of the last remaining no-snivel zones on planet Earth.

Checked the site out 8 or so years ago, before I was in the service, and came back to it years later for the people. It's like "home" when I get home. Sometimes the wife isn't enough of a smart-ass. Knock on wood.

Tons of info from all sorts or different areas.
Only forum where people apologize after a disagreement or even before one happens. At least only mature forum I have really seen.
And thanks to the forum admins they make sure most information is legit and keep people like me posting on areas I have no expertise. So I know I'm not getting shoveled shit when I come on here to read and gain a little insight for the day.

Professional, mature people who have seen the best and worst of the world, have been willing to sacrifice everything to protect their nation, give no BS answers to questions that require such, and are willing to listen to and answer many of the questions, as well as lend a hand, to those who want to follow in their footsteps or simply want to serve others.
That's why I keep coming back.
