MP SRT Snipers...do they attend the same S/S schools as STA Marines (is it even still called STA?)? Do they fire similar courses, etc., while maintaining proficiency?

No. Not that I am aware of. We haven't seen any MP's come through Division 1stMarDivs School. I understand that there is a Designated Marksmanship Crs out there somewere.

Once again, thank you Gunnery Sergeant Hicks. I find it odd that many law enforcement snipers send officers/Agents to the SS Instructor Course at Quantico (FBI HRT does) and SRT Marines attend a DM course. I think SOTG may offer one. Seems like III SOTG had a DM course that was geared specifically toward the now defunct IHR mission. I'm just an assaulter and not a sniper, but I know our guys typically shoot 100-400 yards and don't really need to stalk great distances. Additionally, there are very specific intel requirements that need to be gathered prior to a hostage rescue. Maybe the DM course takes that approach where the S/S courses focus on battlefield scout/sniper skill set.
Thanks again.

Having done three SOTG work ups as a Scout/Sniper. (the IHR training, R&S, TRUE, GOPLAT, Maritime Interdiction etc.) I can say that what is taught in the SOTG packages is different than what is taught in the regular Scout/Sniper courses. This afyternoon I'll try to go into more detail (when I have more time)

Gunny,
SRT snipers did attend 2nd MarDiv's scout/sniper school at Stone Bay when I was in; plus, several other LE sniper/designated marksman courses. I am not for sure how all bases ran their SRT units, but ours received some excellent schools.

Haven't seen that here on the West Coast. The school out here is very rabid about the requirement that students must have 03 MOS's as their Primary MOS.

Not at Lejeune, I know there was four communications guys that went through it.

In class 2-97 We had a kid from 1/4 go to school, he was a comm. guy. I think SSGT Barrett was testing out a new idea. This went on when 1st Sgt Booker was running the school along with Gunny Terry. And they were rather strict and adament about following the requirements to get into school.

1 Mar Div's SRT guys were at Range 116 this past week doing their long gun shooting. They have their own instructors and don't work with the Sniper School out here.

It may be different now, I EAS over five years ago. However, I think schools like that only benefited our guys and raised the caliber of the team.

Training is definitely good but why lose some good school seats to MPs who will never use 60% of the training?
1 Mar Div Scout/Sniper School doesn’t have weapons to loan out and I don’t think SRT out here has their own 40’s to use. This would disqualify them from attending the school.

I once saw MP's on the range shooting 40's from the regular sitting position.
It made us sick.

I once saw MP's in the CQB house moving around with the pistols pointing up in the air like on TV. We were watching up on the side looking down. LAPD SWAT was our instructors and they were ducking. It was a very scary couple of minutes. After we saw that they were excused from the range. We let them stay for a while and they got to see us take the house down.
They were very quite afer that.
While I am down memory lane.
I just remembered one excersie the Cadre had us do. They had us take the entire house down with only two guys. It was a blast. We really got the hang of changing magazines, failure drills, change over drills and throwing flash bangs. Now that was a good day.

Yeah,
SSGT Barrett was the shit!!! I didn't know him too well though. He was the SNCOIC of Regimental S/S School, put the fear of death in me, but after all of the bullshit, he was great. His Marines did nothing but talk him up.

Believe it or not I knew Cpl. Barrett. He went to sniper school after being in STA for 2 days and made it.
I loved the guy and he was a tremendous leader of Marines.
If anyone has heard from this guy or knows anything let me know we are putting together a reunion from the ol platoon.

Actually Gary, we had four M40A1's. And I am not sure about the SRT teams out West, but ours was locked and cocked. We took 1st place in the North Carolina Police/Firemans Olympics in the SWAT competition, 2 man pistol team, 4 man pistol team, and the sniper competition. We brought home over 16 trophies.
Josepy, I am not for sure what the clowns you seen were doing. Hell, I know that probably some of the SRT teams are incompetant. However, not all of them are, our team leader was good friends with 2nd FR CO and he was always hooking us up with schools that we didn't rate or didn't need. But the mission of the team is not a joke and should be taken seriously. We had a good unit that was very competant in thier job, and we spent many hours making sure we stayed that way. From PT'ing everyday or spending over 24 hours at the range/week.

Sniper1,
Considering the description yopu gave me, no I doubt this is the same Marine. You see, the Gunny Terry I know of is dark green, probably not too unusual, but I only know 2 dark green Snipers and he's one of them. A badass son of a bitch!!!! Short, barrelchested, hard core, trash talking, killer. This Terry from the last I saw of him, was the company Gunny for Bco 1/1 just as I was getting out. He was SNCOIC of the Division School when I met him. Some good stories come out of that man, pretty damn hilarious.
Josepy,
Last I knew of Barrett, I was still in the fleet at the time, he got orders to some secret place, not even his platoon knew. Rumor was that he was taking an indoc for the NSA or something to that matter....Don't take this as Gospel, just what I heard in the rumor mill a long long time ago.
