I know of some SAS involvement in the Africian wars eg an SAS sgt- Fred Marafrano was photographed in Angola/Mozambique by Soldier of Fortune mag. There was also a short write up on him.

Hey sounds cool. Can you type up the stuff it said and send it to me via e-mail. You gotta remember one thing..They are probably talking about the Rhodesian SAS....or this Sgt. had already left The Regiment. 22 SAS never really played an active role in that part of the world then, they did however have close contacts with the Rhodesians and S.Africans...for obvious reasons though.

I'm sorry, I read the SOF mag in a library. But the SAS sgt is not Rhodesian. He is a Figian, who served with the unit in Borneo, Falklands and other corners of the Globe. He was even training guards at gold/oil companies in South America and tehn moved on to Africa.

He may have been one of those itinerant SAS types who ventured "on leave" of course, to places like Angola , Mozambique etc, we went for some "on the job training , nothing else!!!!Remember we Aussies like to travel , a lot.So do the Kiwis.

To Pirate - maybe you were thinking of C Squadron Rhodesian Special Air Service, which was disbanded in 1980 when Rhodesia became Zimbabwe. It was know as the Rhodesian Special Air Service, along with the Selous Scouts, the most effective guerilla warfare outfits. Leroy Thompson wrote quite a bit about both.

To HALO1. Were there any 22nd SAS personnel on secondment to the ASASR during the Vietnam War?

To Mike
I know this individual personally, he trained some of our local troops. There is also a story about him in "Killing Zone" by Harry Mc .
I also understand that he used to work with DSL

In Andy McNab s book Immediate Action
he tells about how they trained the Botswanan defence force against South African strikes. There are a few goow stories involving animals such as a rhino and poisonous snake. During their stay a SAS sergeant was killed in a climbing accident, his name was Joe Farragher.
