Me, I was lucky.

I joined the Army with WO flight training guaranteed. That is "if " I made it through basic training.

Though I was a poor boy, I excelled at all things tactical. I out ran, out shot and out-stamina-ed guys twice my size and twice as mouthy. Flight school was guaranteed as long as you could survive basic, back in those days.

Be honest- if your Drill Sergeant called you "Mr" or "miss", you weren't in the day. If you weren't hit in the head soo hard that the first thing that hit the ground was your shoulder, then you were not in the day. If there was a female in your battalion or vice versa, you...

Now it is different, like Califagia is different than the rest of the country! I'm sorry, but my perspective is mine/old/needed today? You may have been through basic, AIT (or whatever it's called these days) and may be serving now, but believe me, today is not the same as before. Though you may not have yet completed a challenge that tested you to the core; questioned whether you would do the right thing or that which maintains your status quo , you will. "Do I peel these MFs off that innocent dude, smackin' them in the ear as I do so, or do I sit on my hands, mind my own business and stay safe?" Hell, it was a WO candidate andf his call for a "congressional" that brought tennis-shoes into the Army.

Puss!

Anyway...

I make it through nightly fights and the PT that followed (0200 grass-drills in your scivies in January at Ft. Jackson/it snowed like hell).

Flight School - The youngest candidate since ???
Harrrrd!?!
Ohh yeah!

..if requested and allowed.

I'm lost dude?

Maybe my computer, but what was the subject? I totally agree the "new" Army is different but what does that have to do with 160 recruitment??

Help me out, just look'n for what started this........ Hell, I might have a comment.

Every Task Force aviator and crew chief I have ever worked with or known has been a true "Quiet Professional" who let his work speak for him.

Some may say that "If it's true, it ain't bragging," but as my dear departed grandmother said of Mummand Ali's boasts:

"It's more polite to let someone else say it."

I'm with Python52, I have no idea what you are talking about.

I believe this is a narrative of how he got there.

Sort of the Airplane version of "start from the beginning" "Ok ...first the earth cooled, then the dinosaurs came..."

I have worked with a couple of Nightstalkers, warrant and enlisted, all are very professional and motivated.....
I get the question every few months....."when are you going?"
I have read about "green platoon" in quad-A etc. on
both officer and enlisted.....
looking to hear from your experience.....thanks....

Think of it as Basic, before you entered the real Army.

PT, IVs, WPs, TOT, RPs, IPs, DQ and a whole host of other letters.

And yes, before you ask, we do go to Dairy Queen.

GP the hard part, HEE hee hee ha ha ha.........

TigerHooter:

Post some more, there may be a few FOG's like me out here who were retired before there were any "designated" Aviation SOF (160th, and others).

I flew B-model gunships (A Co 101st) with Teddy Allen, he arrived at Soc Trang in 66 as a CPT.

My bad ... finally looked at your profile. Work gets in my way, no excuse.
I knew a few 617th guys and hooter dudes. What years in D Co?

What's the rest of the story?

Terry, thanks for the nudge to look at the profile. Darn these bifocals?!?

De nada.

I believe I am one of the oldest Aviators on board. Check out my invite to go to Houston.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Forty years ago this year (1965) was the first time that an Assault
Helicopter Company of the 101st Airborne was committed to combat. It was
the first time since WWII that any unit from the 101st had been committed
to combat.

It was done in the form of Company A, 101st Aviation Battalion, 101st
Airborne Division which very quickly became know as the "Warriors and
Thunderbirds".

We are planning a 40th reunion (many of us may not be around for the 50th)
in Houston, April 22-24, 2005. As soon as a place is secured you will be
informed. It will be somewhere in the vicinity of Hobby Airport, just south
of the city which is most accessible by air and convenient by land.

Our aim is to contact as many as possible of those that served at Soc Trang
(April 65 - Sep 66) as a Warrior or T-bird and all of our supporting
troops. We solicit your help in contacting as many you can and inform them
and or provide us with the e-mails, addresses or phone numbers of those

that we may not have contact.

Our goal is to have at least 50 that served during that period in
attendance. This can be accomplished if we will all get behind this and
contact our contacts.

Our point of contact will be:

(I erased the POC, if anyone is interested they can contact me.)

Let's all get behind this and make it a memorable occasion that will make
us want to plan a 50th!!!!

Any member of our A101 Aviation Group that wishes to attend this event is
certainly welcome to attend, please let us know as soon as possible if you
are interested and wish to attend. Tentative dates are; 28 April through
01 May 2005, location Houston, Texas, hotel and other details to be
provided as they become available.
