Upgraded A-10C debuts Tuesday

By Bruce Rolfsen
Times staff writer

While the A-10 Warthog’s looks haven’t been improved, the Air Force is expecting great things from the upgraded version of the warplane dubbed the A-10C.

The improved A-10C will make its public debut on Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla.

The upgrade gutted much of the A-10’s old cockpit dials and gauges and replaced them with computer screens and digital readouts.

The aircraft also got Global Positioning System navigation gear and a suite of warning devices to prevent pilots from flying into the ground.

In terms of weaponry, the upgrade allows the A-10 to release satellite-guided bombs such as the family of Joint Direct Attack Munitions and the Wind Corrected Munitions Dispenser.

The $300 million project involved the close cooperation of the Air Force’s Ogden Air Logistics Center in Utah and Lockheed Martin.

The incredible thing about the Warthog is how long it has been around. One of the original models from the 1970's is on display at our local air museum, while the state's Air National Guard is still flying them. The A-10's longevity is a tribute to the engineers who designed and built it.

The most impressive thing to me is how the aircraft was essentially built around the gattling gun...

I hope to God that they put better commo gear on this model.

Whenever I see the A-10 mentioned, I can't help but remember a certain board member from SOCNET swearing to me and another board member, as we were driving around some forward deployed A-10s, that the Corps had a squadron of A-10s. And he was willing to lose money over it as well.

I shoulda hosed him....:D:D

I love the A-10. I can remember escaping the confines of Fayetteville/Ft. Bragg and going down to Myrtle Beach and seeing/hearing those things coming in or taking off from Myrtle Beach AFB. Saw quite a bit of them at NTC in 1987.

I recently saw an episode of "Wings over Afghanistan" and they had some awesome night footage of a gun run on some bad guys. Nothing more beautiful than the sight of my tax dollars at work. :D :D

Didn't the AF want to dump the A-10 about ten or 15 years ago?

Seems I remember that the buzz was that moving dirt simply wasn't the AF's thing...

Funny how things change over time.

Now if we could just get our Iraqi friends to realize that change is generational... it actually takes TIME...

I think the day that the USAF decides to drop the A-10, is the same day the Army returns to fixed-wing aviation. :)

Yeah. The idea was that the Marine F-35 (STOVL) would replace the A-10. Instead, we will have both.

sweetness.....

The original concept was one (AF) version of the F-35 to replcae the O/A-10 and F-16's. Leadership changed their mind after seeing the Warthog operate in Afghanistan, they substituted the STOVL model (a.k.a the Marine version) for the O/A-10's

Now to change the topic a bit, I noticed this is the A-10C, I never knew we had an A-10B. When did that happen?

The A-10B was a 2 seat variant built as a test bed for night/ adverse weather testing for the airframe. Only 2 were built.

Sort of. The A-10 N/AW (Night and Adverse Weather) was developed as a two seater, but was only called the N/AW A-10. There was a prototype YA-10B to be called A-10B that was to be a trainer, but the program was cancelled.
