View Full Version : OLDEST SFAS/Q COURSE GRAD
Crawdad

Hello All,
Have any of you gone through SFAS or the Q course in your late thirties or know someone who has?
I'm a prior service Marine looking into signing up with the 19th in Utah. I know I have the motivation and can get up to speed physically. But I'm also realistic and recognize I'm not 20 anymore.
Do any of you who have done something similar have any insights to offer? I do know that it would be an asskicker. I'd just like to know if a guy my age stands more than an ice cube's chance in hell of getting selected and passing the Q course.
thanks,
Crawdad

It can be done. Have seen some very fit guys in late 30s and early 40's do it. Usally NG types

Ditto what LRS Guy said.
The oldest guy in my Q course class was 42. I know a guy from 19th who went to the Q at 41 and went to Ranger School right after that

How bad do you want it? Age be damned!
I'm 34, completed SFAS class 03-05, and was selected.

Congrats daquat!
Welcome aboard!
Did you do the SOPC/SFAS program? I heard they combined it.

I went directly to SFAS... Thankfully I missed the hazing at SOPC.
The new format must not be in effect yet; Phase IA (SOPC) and Phase IB (SFAS) for everyone. I thought it changed in FY 2005.

It's nice to hear from the older guys who have been through the Q course. I'm 32 and have been a Navy Reservist for 2 years. I am currently in the process of securing a conditional release from the Navy to transfer to the National Guard and joining a SF unit in the 20th.
Crawdad, I'm shootin you a message to say hello as we both appear to be in the same boat. If there is anyone else in a similar situation, feel free to drop me a line.

Crawdad,
A friend of mine excelled (some BTDT's said he "smoked" it) at SFAS in the early nineties. He was in his mid 40's, 11th Group out of Winston-Salem, NC.
There was a Marine who went through and completed in my course who was 41. Once again, Guard bum.

My last team sgt was 42, He hung with all events in PT. Met a guard guy who told me his bud was 51 and did CDQC!!! I personally had buds who were 37 in SFAS, and 41 in the medic course. Motrin and bengay work fuckin miracles. As I am learning after shoulder surgery.
I knew several guys in the their late 30s to late 40s who went through SFQC. Kinda funny watching them pass everything the first time and the 20-somethings getting recycled...
They're more focused and less prone to BS.

Just out of curiosity, what is the average age for guys going through SFAS and Q?

Mid to late 20's. There's a smattering of early 30's and only a couple of late 30's early 40's. I have a guy in my REC that's 52 y's/o. He seems like a good guy but I don't want him there strictly because it costs a bucket of money to put people through the course and mandatory retirement is 60. I may be the NCOIC but someone above me wants to make the cover of Special Warfare magazine or some shit. I'm glad we never run out of money.

What about the youngest age seen in Q. Im 16 now doing PT every week day, and i plan to join reserve when 17 going through with that and than going sf. Anyone who has gone sf out of high school give a shot out, because I would love to see some support since my parents arent into it( but dont worry, it will be done no matter what ) .Thanks.

Craig Robinson went through in his mid-30s, then went to SCUBA school and led a SCUBA Det in 5th Group.

Troy2k makes me want to ask if any of yall went through SFAS after coming back from a surgery/major injury. I'm six months out from shoulder surgery and it's stronger than it's been in years, but I'm still nervous about it. I'll max the pushups again but will the beating I get from SFAS literally rip me a new one?

We had several guys on my Team in 19th Group that went through the Q course in their mid or late 30s. There was a guy on another team who went through the Q course and Ranger school in his early 40s.
I have seen many guys in their late 30s and 40s who are in better shape than guys in their 20s. It is all about conditioning, and a lot depends on the person.

I think I know him. Is he a bravo from W.V with the initials JK?

Good thread, being that this is something I will shoot for after I retire from the Corps!

Yes, he is a 18B from WV. I for the life of me, can not remember his name, If I hear it I would know it. He married a girl he met while we were deployed to Kosovo.
I actually think guys in their 30s make better SF canidates, as a whole they usually have a little more maturity. Of course we had some really young guys on our teams just straight out of the Q course at age 21 and 22 that were squared away and older guys who needed a lesson in professionalism.

I know him. He was my ODA team sgt in ANCOC in 2003. If I remember right, he went to SFAS in his late 30's, SFQC at 40 and Ranger School right after the Q. He was a first time go at Ranger School.
As for the younger guys, didn't you have a young REP 63 18B type get kicked out of country?
leopardprey
3 January 2006, 20:16
Not exactly. We had a young 18B get into some trouble and he almost got kicked out of the country-instead he was transferred to a admin position on the B team. The older 18B (early 40s) he was with was sent home. I can tell you more if you PM me.
The young 18B was good to go, just was hanging out with the wrong guy.
That is what I say to those who think young 18X or Rep 63s are too young. I have seen some young 21 yrs olds just graduated form the Q course who are more mature than some senior NCOs in their late 30s or 40s.
A couple of trite sayings are appropriate:
You are only as old as you feel.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained. If you don't try you'll never know and continue to wonder.

This raises a question, at what point does this come into effect (from pam 601-25)?:
Following items are unauthorized for use at the SFAS Course. SFAS cadre will confiscate these
items.
Motrin
Any type of pain reliever
Thanks,
Jeff
btw-I'm not trying to be a smart-ass, I'm genuinely curios.
