Im getting a new handgun, but im having trouble with which one i want. I already have a Glock 45 and love it. The decision im trying to make is between the SIG P226 and the HK USP. If anyone could help me decide which gun performs better i would be very appreciative.

thanks, DAVE

Hi Dave,

Well, first let me start off by saying you are choosing between two of the finest handguns made. Second, 85% of shooting is the shooters confidence and training with his weapon. As long as you are comfortable and have a good quality weapon (Sig, Beretta, HK, Glock).

Now, that being said here's my opinions. Personally I carry the Sig Sauer P226. It has never failed me and is an excellent shooting weapon. The magazine release and decocker are easily manipulated by someone even with smaller hands. I also like the full-length slide rail on the frame...this helps to ensure accuracy. Mine has been throught the wringer and is still shooting like it came out of the box new. The only thing I *might* like on a 226 is accessory rails. Other than that, that's my choice.

I have used HK's as well, and they are fine shooters too (at least in 9mm, .45, and .40). However, there are some things I don't like about them (takedown, slide rails). For me the feel just isn't right with the USP. I'm not a big fan of the magazine release on the HK. It's ambidexterous and is located under the rear of the trigger guard. I've seen several shooters accidentally drop magazines on a course of fire with USPs.

Comparison between the two: My opinion the Sig shoots better and more accurately.

You might also look at some of the former posts on Sigs and HK's on this forum. Hope this helps. Let me know if you want more detail.

Take care and be safe.

I would go with the sig. I was also thinking about a usp but I thought it felt very cheap. The usp has had some problems and I've never heard of a sig having any trouble. I carry a sig and it has never malfunctioned on me. It is also the standard sidearm to the Navy Seals so it must be a very dependable and accurate firearm. Hope this helped.

First i would like to say thanks to you guys for the help; The sig has been the weapon i have been focusing on, and the way you 2 talked about it it sounds like a great gun.
But i have one more question. I have heard that the sig's slide starts to crack after 3'400 rounds, is this true? Also i would like to know why you think the HK feels cheap?

thanks again DAVE

Dave-

Let me try to answer the second question before getting into my opinions. I believe that sig has fixed the problem with there frames cracking. I think bd, and jy both said they had made some adjustments to it by removing a small portion of the slide rail. From my experience this has in no way affected the accuracy or performance of the weapon.

I have carried both Sig, and HK. I like both weapons, and found them both to be reliable, although I did not experience some of the problems with the HK some have mentioned. Like bd, and silent-1 have both mentioned these two weapons have totally different feels to them. My advice try them out and see which one feels the most comfortable. Sig's seem to be the preferred weapon of alot of military operators, but HK did make a SOCOM model as well.(how popular it is ?) You'll have a hard time going wrong with either of these two choices.

Dave,

I've not heard that story. I'd say that's not true at all. My Sig has had thousands and thousands of rounds run through it with no cracking or any other problems. The P226 is designed to use heavy loads (I routinely shoot +P rounds). They just keep on ticking.

The only bad thing about *some* Sigs is the K-Kote finish (which I don't think they offer anymore on new weapons). After a while that particular finish begins to chip off. Looks ugly, but in no way affects the performance of the gun.

I'm not sure I'd say the HK feels cheap, but it does have the polymer frame. While I've seen problems (mag release) the only one I've experienced with the HK was its tendency to stovepipe with reloads. However, reloads are not factory ammunition and aren't the same quality.

Best advice, go with what you're comfortable with. Take care and be safe.

Well since they already hit on the Sig, I'll throw in some HK comments. My preferance leans toward the full size H&K's due to they're balance, and overall feel. I like the mag release, and the polymer does feel cheap, but it is very light. They are both excellent shooters, and unquestionably reliable. People tend to lean one way or the other though, almost like Ford and Chevy. Pick the gun that is more to your liking and you won't be dissapointed either way.

In my humble opinion, I have owned both also and I found both to be great weapons. I lean toward the HK because I feel you get more for the money. I think you pay more for the SIG and all you are paying for is the name. The HK is cheaper and is just as good if not better a weapon than the SIG. My 2 cents.

I personally own a USP 9 and i have shot thousands of rounds thru it and i have had no
problems with the weapon. I think that the
mag release i good, you can drop it with your
trigger finger and it is flat so you wont
drop the mag accidentally. it has mild recoil
and because of the double spring it will last
forever

I recently shot a cousin's HK P7 9mm and I really liked it. I don't know if it is available to civilians, since my cousin is a cop. You might want to check it out. I had one jam in it, but that was because it was a handload and I let my wrists go limp. I really liked it, and I feel you should check it out.
