How do they determine your aptitude for a given MOS? Is it a separate test during SFAS? If so is it MOS specific type information (A&P for 18D, radios for 18E, etc) or just some general test that somehow measures your ability to perform? I want to be an 18D. I'm trying to determine if I can stack the odds in my favor by studying while I wait to enter the Army. If studying will help what else could I study besides A&P?
I think they use you ASVAB score to determine that
I think they use your ASVAB for that so you should try to ace the ASVAB. Hope this helps.
ASVAB scores, testing while in SFAS and your personal preference list.

Alright, as a sluggo who aced the ASVAB I have a question concerning a rumor I heard from an 18x candidate. I understand that in the pipeline rumors fly like Persian arrows at Thermopylae, but I will still ask.
I was told if your scores were high enough that your personal preference was sometimes ignored and you were sent to whatever MOS your instructors thought you best suited for.
I live in fear of my choice being turned into an 18D... not only more schooling, but I hate doctorin'.
Yes thats possible. There are a lot of good medics out there who's last choice was medic.
I scored rather well on the ASVAB's and smoked several of the other tests. When in Selection, we were told by the cadre that if your GT score was in excess of 120, you were going to be an 18D. With all ASVAB scores between 128 and 130, that too was my biggest fear. Having owned a construction company in my previous life, I wanted 18C. My order of preference went 18C, 18E, 18B, 18D. I was given the 18E course in a Selection course that was largely 18E and 18D when they gave out the MOS assignments. I swear the only reason I did not get 18D was because it was my last choice. The following selection was all 18B and 18C.
Ultimately, it will all depend upon the needs of the force for your specific selection course.
