Last year, I read Warner Smith's book "Covert Warrior". In recent years, much has been written about MACV SOG operations "Over the Fence". I've heard this and that about SF'ers getting out and joining CIA operations. Can anyone share factual info on what the CIA was doing in Southeast Asia after July 1963.

Aside from Air America and Phoenix, they were fairly uninvolved.....LOL

The CIA Saigon station was one of the largest during the Vietnam War. They were much involved.

Have you ever heard about "CAS Project" ?

The CAS was one of the CIA's projects in Laos.

CAS (Combined Area Studies?
Controlled American Sources?)

Does anybody know ?

Riflemaster,

I don't have any details to share, but I
had three close friends who were employed
by the CIA in SEA during the period from about 1966 till about 1972.

One thing I do recall is that one of the guys was paid in excessof $50K (tax-free)for a one year assignment. He never would say much about what it was he did or where he was assigned.

I talked with him for the first time in years last October at a friend's duaghter's wedding reception, and when someone brought up Vietnam he said to me "I don't go there anymore" and did not engage the others in their conversation.

From 1965 to 1972 I was dating a girl who worked for the CIA in DC as an analyst or ?
(she was tight <grin>, and pretty tight-lipped about her job as well). I do know that her specialty was SEA.

Members of the ASA and the Aviation Batts that supported them were loaned out to the CIA. This was due to the ASA's mission. Listning in on Radio Transmitions. Maybe Loaned out is a bit to dramatic, But they did work with members of the CIA

Call me dumb but Special Operations Group and Studies and Observations Group are the same thing right? Or what?
