I noticed that a lot of the SEALs mentioned in Richard Marcinko's books were real. I would like to know though if they are all real-life characters. Duck Foot Dewey was a real character along with Nasty Nick Grundle but I am curious as to others such as Rodent. Rodent claimed to have an older brother in the Teams name Fat Rat in Option Delta. Now after reading other books, I noticed that many referred to a SEAL nicknamed Fat Rat who had a younger brother named Little Fat Rat and not Rodent. I would like to know if they are the same person.

Josepy, I have a slight problem. You see, I did have the book, but my dad threw it away because he thought it would interfere with my studies, so basically I can't touch any book that relates to the MILITARY.

Seoul..ahh the "STUDIES BEFORE ANYTHING!!" mentality of Asian fathers. Ah I sure do miss my Dad throwing away all my Spec Ops related literature when I was in high school.
Stay strong Seoul, Study and PT now and you won't have to read those books.
good luck

Is dad going to pitch your history text when you get to the parts dealing with war?

Lol you guys, my dad has been shooting off lately of me becoming like Bill Gates? He wants me to become someone who creates a software company that makes big bucks. I wonder why...maybe Korean mentality seeing as they think money is everything. Kinda f***ed up isn't it? They grade your social position on how much money you make. By the way, as of the Ivy League Schools, at least my dad has the sense to understand that I will never make it there with my dumbass. For any other people who have to experience this, I know how you feel.
Guys,
Figure out what yout want and work hard for it. If there's anything Asian parents (and parents in general) love, it's a hard-working kid. Browsing SOCNET does not count as hard work! Pick up the CNO's reading list or something. Just some words from an asian mom's kid...

According to NSF (NAtional Science Foundation for the government-challenged), 2/3 of Americans who are earning Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, biology and other hard sciences are Asian-Americans. I remember a professor saying the most qualified Americans is equal to the less qualified foreigners in the low ranked physic department. I thought he was joking. He was right.

Is there any wonder why American businesses spend big bucks on the services of foreign computer consulting companies?
SeoulTrain,
Speaking as a disgruntled IT peasant I'd encourage you to get good at info systems - if college is where you're headed instead of the military. Its really not as hard a field of study as people think. And if you have the know how you can easily command a six-figure salary after a couple years of experience. Attorneys cant even boast that kind of progress.

yes, but IT ppl tend to top out at a low 6-figure salary, whereas attorneys can easily command a mid- to high-six-figure salary when they acquire more experience and a couple of victories under their belts.
but anyway, back to specops...

RudeDawg, just to let you know, I want to join the military, just my parents don't want me to. They have a problem with me goin to the Naval Academy in Annapolis. They'd rather have me go for someplace like Caltech.

Being a parent myself I can understand their apprehensions about your chosen career path. Dont disregard or disrespect their oppinion. Instead realize that it will take some time for them to began to respect you as a man and give you space to make your own decisions. Just remember that the respect I speak of is earned and this principle applies to every aspect of life; at home, in the military, at school etc. Just hang in there and do what YOU feel is right for YOU.

Gotcha Rudedawg. I respect their opinion and understand why they believe that they should. I'll try to hang in and see if the military is what I want to be.

Do your parents honestly think that throwing out your SpecOps material is going to dissuade you? That kind of action just reinforces the desire, or it did in my case anyway. Instead of an executive (which is what my folks hoped I'd be) I joined up and went right into SpecOps (Weapons, Tactics, Explosives, and Security), much to their dismay. I stayed in for 8 years and only NOW am I an executive with a "dot-com". I can tell you, from experience, that the drive and determination I got from working in SpecOps have helped me to blow by others with BA, MA, and even PhD. So, keep the faith, bro!

I am in total agreement that you should do what YOU feel is right for you. My family wanted me to be a businessman so I tried studying it in a community college. I hated it. I wanted to fly helicopters (and I needed discipline) so I joined the military. It was the best thing I could have done. But that was just me. If you want to make your parents happy (and that seems to be very important to you), I suggest you try college BUT join their ROTC program, or join the reserves. At least you'll get a taste of it without committing to 3-4 years. Hopefully your 'rents will respect and appreciate that you are trying their way while pursuing your own.
Besides, you can always quit college...

...by the way. I never did get to fly a helicopter, just ride in them. Some things just don't work out the way you plan!

RUDEDAWG, while you're on the topic of cash money, nowadays even doctors top out in the low 6 figures, similar to the IT geeks... I mean people. So, if anyone doesn't want to go to school for a hundred years and still make the same amount of cash as a doc, just go the IT route.

Thanks you guys. Having my parents try to dissuade me from joining the SEALs has strengthened my resolve. I was planning to go to ROTC in college but I'll probably try to go to the Academy....

Whatever you do, Seoul, do it with distinction. No matter what the arena, warriors are found everywhere. It's the person inside, not the credentials.

You would think so, but he won't concede as long as he has campaign funds to pay people to look the other way. One thing is for sure...whoever gets it is going to have a lame duck term.

Ya mean the Real TEAM? I bought it a long time ago, but my Dad threw it away and said it would get in the way of my studies. I now have extremely limited access to SEAL books.
