I was reading a book about SOG units in Vietnam and their is an Account of a man sawing of the barrel to the length of the 40 mm round and removing the butt stock. Was this ever really used? Also in the same book I heard of specops guys testing a 13mm rocket pistol called the Gyrojet? they say it impacts as hard as a .50 Cal. is this true? Also sa far as the M4 VS. MP5 arguement where does the FN-P90 FALL.

Your refering tot he Plastar (sp?) book...
There are several refrences to M-79's being
cut down in length by operators who wanted a shortened version. As far as the Gyrojet pistol, it was a popular toy at that time (it even is in the James Bond Film "Thunderball"). It is esentially a pistol which fire miniature rockets with fins, the accuracy was said to be poor but the velocities it would travel at would make it hard hitting.

Hi Apocalypse;

This leaves the P90 as a replacement for the pistol as it was intended, not as a battle weapon, a personal defense weapon. The weapon was tested here but not adopted, though small numbers are in the arms room, as with most weapons. Think it may catch on with civie law enforcement, they tend to like "exotic" weapons.

T.R. is right on about the M79s and GyroJet. The cut off/sawed off M79s were popular with SF units along with sawed off M-60s( great heavy cover weapon)

Take care...Jim
