I would be particularly interested to hear about the terminal ballistics of the 5.45mm rd. It has an internal hollow space at the front of he bullet between the core and the jacket. Some sources say that this is a manufacturing expediency and others that this increases lethality. Anyone have any experience/ballistic gelatin tests?

recce,
that sounds similar to the Sierra MatchKing bullets. they also have a small hollow space between the jacket and core of the bullet. I know that in Sierra's case it's a manufacturing by product and the bullet doesn't expand at all, which is why the 168gr and 175gr MatchKings can now be found in the M852 and M118LR rounds respectively.
Hope it helps,
Mac

Hi Snake;
The AK74 is actually just a the AK47 modified for the "new" Soviet 5.45X39mm round. The acurracy in it is marginally better than the old 7.62X39mm. In other words it's a 1 MOB (minute of barn) weapon. The Soviets intended the rifle to be used as an area weapon fire mainly full auto at all times when the Motor Rifle troops were dis- mounted with most firing done from the hip, actual precision fire was not even taught in training at any length. They relied on heavy suppressing fire so an accurate weapon was not needed, the weapon was used more like the submachine guns of WWII. This is now changing with the new An 94's and some other designs using this round.
The round it self is a good one, not a world class round, and is inferior to the 5.56X45mm NATO in overall performance. The bullet is a steel cored, with a sharp meplat that is hollow inside for the first third (app) of the point(no opening or hollow point showing), this causes the bullet to unstable which causes the round to tumble when stricking flesh and muscle resulting in excellent anti personnel effects, while retaining sufficient penetration to get the job done. When used in a well made weapon this is an exc. round. roughly equiv. to a .222 Rem. the accuracy potential is also similar to the .222 (good)
To sum it up the weapon is mediocre the round is good. Though highly servicable easy to train a peasant to use, it's no tack driver...side of a barn ..maybe. It's big forte is it keeps going like the Pink Bunny no matter how bad you treat it.
Sort of rambled on but think I needed to on this one. If i can help further please feel free to ask.
