Hi Yossie;

The new light system for the M4A1 (SOPMOD M4) is the VLI. The SOPMOD Kit consists of the following;
1ea VLI assembly
1ea Cable switch, membrane
1ea strap, retention
1ea Filter,balck,red,opaque
1ea Operators manual
1set either 3 DL123 lithium or 6 "AA" alkaline
1ea Carry bag
1ea Fastener tape, loop
1ea Jack Plug

NSN 5855-01-448-5464

This system attaches to the RIS/RAS handguards and is purpose built for the M4A1. And manufactured by Insight Technology Inc., 3 Technology Drive, Londonderry, NH 03053, USA (603)626-4800 , no web site at this time. I'll see if I can scan some photos of the system and post them to SOCCAHT when able.

can't help with the helmet mounted cameras, take care...Jim

thanks for the help jy.

what VLI stands for?

I'm specifically referring to this outstanding pic here (scroll down a bit) of Israeli yamam operators. As you can clearly see they all have a flashlight under their colt commando, Is that a VLI?

Further more as you can see the two operators on the left have something on their helmet. Is that night vision monopod or mini cams?

Insight Technologies has cut a deal to sell their lights through Streamlight, so all of the Insight Technology lights including the VLI can be found at the Streamlight site (www.streamlight.com)

Hi Yossie;

The lights on the CARs could be VLIs as it appears the PAQ4 is mounted to the handguards behind front sights, it's hard to tell from the photo. But by the equipment mounted and locations it appears to be the RIS/RAS system as on the photo I posted.

The helmet mounted items are either the NVGs or monocular night vision in the up position, can not tell if they are US or Israeli issue, though more than likely made by ELOP.

VLI stands for VISIBLE LIGHT ILLUMINATOR, sorry I forgot to include that in original post..Take care, my friend...Jim

thanks for the info.

I know what RIS stands for but what is "RAS"?

also what is the difference between PAQ 4 and AN/PEQ2?

btw, JY, did you found any Israeli SF pics in your private collection (we talked about before socnet crashed)?

thanks in advance

>also what is the difference between PAQ 4 and AN/PEQ2?

The PAQ-4 is a single function IR aiming unit, while the PEQ-2 is a dual beam unit that includes an adjustable aiming unit and illuminator. The two beams can be adjusted individually. Six modes can be selected from

1) Off
2) Aim - High
3) Aim - Low
4) Illuminator
5) Dual - Low
6) Dual - High

The low power mode is to minimize blooming at close range. In dual mode the aiming point is significantly brighter then the illuminated area.

Hi Yossie;

MT has the AN/PAQ-4C and AN/PEQ-2 nailed pretty much. In addition there is a second laser in the SOPMOD M4A1 Kit the AN/PEQ-5 the Carbine Visible Laser(both AN/PEQ's belong to the SOPMOD M4A1 Kit, the AN/PAQ-4 is general issue with the AN/PEQ-6 LAM for the MK 23 MOD 0 pistol)

The RAS is Rail Attachment System refering to the actual clamp on each piece of equipment that will attach to the RIS, it's very similar to the weaver scope ring clamp.

Haven't had a chance to look through the pile of boxes as yet but will in a few weeks.

take care, my friend...Jim
