I know that most movies suck when it come to weapons realism, but did anyone see the movie "Heat"? Some guys in that movie had M4s w/duct tape wrapped around part of the handguard. I tell why this is usefull (the tape wasn't used to attach anything). Also if you have seen the film, compare the Chalker sling to the bungee cord setup the robbers use.

Ive seen it... IMHO one of the more realistic action-sequences in the history of film. On a shorty M4, the most likely reason to tape the forearm is for extra isolation. That old slimline forearm gets hot quickly. Also for extra grip on a small, kicking and jumping, weapon.

Some friends of mine have done the same thing, both around the handguard and the hand grip, on a few G3s, to get a better grip. Now, that wasn't really duct tape, but some other thicker kind of tape they used, but it sure works.

And remember: there are no dumb questions only more or less dumb answers.

Many Israeli solders put tape around the handgurd just so the tape will be handy when you need it, and not for isolation reasons.
