I'm a 9mm pistol kind of guy and want a SMG. I really like the H&K MP5. I've seen on the
internet that it is illegal. I'd like to
own one to shoot at the range. I also want to
know the price range. If you have any other
weapons idea's for me, just suggest.
Well now it all depends on what your interested in doesn't it? Assuming your here in the States of course... If your talking strictly civie style firearms there is the H&K 94 that the company made a few years back. Basically the same as an MP-5 save the 16.0 inch barrel-the prices on those have gone up considerably since it ceased production though. Other 9mm Carbines legal (depending on where you live of course) for ownership here in the States include:
1.) The Ruger PC9: $550+/-
2.) The Calico Liberty Series: $684+/-
3.) Colt Match Target Lightweight: $987+/-
4.) The Marlin Model 9 Camp Carbine: $438+/-
5.) Olympic Arms PCR-5: $830+/-
Mind you the prices may not be entirely accurate-didn't have time to grab current price info on them. But it varies from store to store like most other things. It's technically illegal, to own a selective fire model would mean going through the following process:
1. Be a US Citizen at least 21 years old
2. Be of sane mind
3. Is not an abuser of drugs or alcohol
4. Have never been convicted of a felony
5. Pay a $200.00 Federal Transfer Tax on each weapon purchased. (This is a one time tax, not a yearly tax)
6. Fill out BATF Form 4 - This involves getting a Signature of the "Chief Law
Enforcement Officer" in your area signifying that he has no knowledge that you will use your weapon for anything other that lawful purposes
7. Have your fingerprints/photographs taken and submitted to BATF with the above application.
8. Have the money to be able to afford the weapons themselves.
The list came from a website I stumbled across a few years back-wish I knew which so I could credit it for the info.
The Cost of a new MP-5 itself isn't cheep-here's the price info I collected on them from South Florida Specialty Arms website a few months back.
MP5A2 (SEF) $1,000.00
MP5A2 (NT) $1,110.00
MP5A2 (012) $1,115.00
MP5A2 (2RB) $1,140.00
MP5A2 (3RB) $1,150.00
MP5A3 (SEF) $1,160.00
MP5A3 (NT) $1,265.00
MP5A3 (2RB) $1,299.00
MP5A3 (3RB) $1,310.00
MP5-N (RS) $1,299.00
MP5-N (FS) $1,210.00
MP5SFA2 $1,080.00
MP5SFA3 $1,280.00
MP5SD3 (SEF)
MP5SD2 (SEF) $1,685.00
MP5SD2 (NT) $1,745.00
MP5SD2 (2RB) $1,645.00
MP5SD2 (3RB) $1,820.00
MP5SD3 (SEF) $1,840.00
MP5SD3 (NT) $1,899.00
MP5SD3 (2RB) $1,980.00
MP5SD3 (3RB) $1,980.00
MP5SD-N (w/ detach suppressor) $2,350.00
I'll leave the actual suggestions on other possible canidates in the selective fire range to those who've got trigger time on them. I'd think Tripp would have more accurate-up to date info on pricing as he's in this sort of business.

I thought if your a civie, you couldn't even purchase a new semi-auto mp5! If i'm wrong I'll buy one tomorrow! There is a used MP5 a3 with the factory collapsable stock at the local gun shop for 4,000. He said civies can't purchase new ones, only used pre-ban. Also do you guys think they are worth the money? Are they still the main cqb weapon used by seals or is the m4 replacing it? Thanks.

The SOPMOD M4A1 has replaced all MP5s as the standard for CQB in SOCOM-the reason is overpenetration concerns of 9mm rounds, and better ballistic performance of .223 with lower risk of ricochets as well as a better range, and being a more robust weapon.

UH60fan- According to federal law, you can't own a real MP5. The McLure-Volkmer Firearms Owner Protection Act of 1986 restricts you to a weapon made on the H&K 94 (semi-auto) receiver. While it may be selective fire, it does not have the same reliability. Among other things, this law augments the National Firearms Act of 1934, which was the first real effort to destroy the Constitution. The auto weapons provisions of McLure-Volkmer were tendered as a political consideration to Marxist-Leninist anti-gun politicians.

Mac679 - Have you seen any of the test showing penetration of the different calibers? We had done one in conjunction with Federal Ammo. We used the Colt SMG 9mm, and the Colt AR-15 "shorty". I have that on disk, as crude as it may be for a gelatin test it convinced our administration to go from 9mm to .223 for entry weapons.
