What do you guys think is the best all-around suppressed combat weapon? I know JY has earlier mentioned a suppressed USP .45, but I would think a pistol couldn't compare in accuracy to a shoulder-fired weapon. But there are complaints about the MP5SD's lack of power. So what are your thoughts?

and to tack on a question with this one, anyone got any hands on experience with SSK's .300Whisper series of surpressed AR15 uppers?

No hands on experience, but it looks like an outstanding platform

The .300 Whisper is heads and shoulders above the 5.56 when it comes to quite work and SSK does very good work. My first choice for quite work, but a lot of that has to do with the flexibility of the M4 platform.

The AS Vul and 9x39 is also a very effective and quiet combination.

Hi kalashnikov;

Actually THE best suppressed shoulder fired weapon is the British De Lisle carbine in .45 with the Welrod comming in second.

At the ranges and actual use of suppressed pistol caliber weapons the suppressed pistol is just as effective as a subgun. Both have to be fired semi auto, range is generally limited to CQB. With a subgun it is slower to point and clumsy at this range, plus you are poorly prepared for a REAL gun battle because you only have the subgun and a secondary PISTOL. During the infil/exfil you have NO long range weapon and at the mercy of rifle/carbine armed troops. And the already weak pistol cartride is further degraded by the suppressor to 1-3 times lesser caliber equals( 9mm degraded to .380K or .38S&W levels in it's 147gr subsonic loading used in suppressed weapons).

Another problem with a suppressed shoulder fired pistol caliber weapon, is that the round itself being slowed down by the "can" becomes very unstable resulting in a severe ricochet problem. This endangers non combatants and team memebers not to mention any hostages close to your targets. All of this is the reason the 5.56X45MM in the M4 has replaced the MP5's in most operations, with the suppressed weapon being a pistol such as the MK 23 MOD 0, Tactical .45, and a few others.

Take care...Jim

I think the .300 Whisper would be good as it was designed to be subsonic for use in suppresed weapons. HK makes a new .45 subgun that should be good suppresed as the .45 is subsonic and still pretty powerful.

I think the best idea would be a suppresed M4 with a quick detach suppresor like Gemtech offers. You shouldn't need many suppresed rounds, and if you get in a firefight, noise is not a problem any more so it SHOULD be fairly easy to seperate mags with subsonic ammo.

Hi Riley;

Knights Arm. does make a QD suppressor for the M4A1 and it is part of the SOPMOD M4 kit.

Take care...Jim

A good example of the limitations of silenced weapons is the South African Recce raid on the oil wells in the Cabinda enclave in 1985, Operation Argon. Most of the nine operators were carrying suppressed weapons (Skorpions I think) with only three AKs in the team, plus a Makarov pistol each. Therefor when they got into a firefight with Angolan troops they were at a serious disadvantage.

JY,
I knew the kit had a Knights suppressor, but was unaware that it was a QD.
