View Full Version : MagPull
Anyone used the MAGPULL system? Is it really better than a loop of paracord?
Thanks.

I havent used it, but from the looks of it, how many empty MAGPUL equiped magazines can you clip onto a D ring as opposed to a 550 corded magazine? Id rather have the 550 cord..
Just my .02 cents
I have seen para cord attach to the bottom of mags before and wondred why it was there, you mentioned you clip it to D ring, surly you don't mean you have a magazine hanging of your kit, do you?

Andy,
Yes on a D-ring clipped to your shoulder strap. It a place to put mags once they are expended so you don't drop all of your mags on the ground. You might need to reload them later. You clip the mag to the D-ring with the gutted 550 cord loop.
On the other hand, the 550 cord loop doesn't always stay "open". You could still attach a loop the the MAGPULL, right?

yes, but bulky. I tried it and my ammo pouch got kinda crowded and the 550 cord gets kind of tangled if u aren't careful
There's an old saying "Fishing lures catch more fishermen than fish". I've seen these new plastic thingies, and for my .02 think the saying applies. They add enough extra width to the mags to make them hard to pull from your pouches, can be fatal in a speed reload.
The old but safe gutted 550 cord with a knot tied in each end secured under the mag floor plate works better and takes up NO room in the pouch, and if you keep them short will not tangle. To silence your mags put a couple wrapps of 100mph tape around the base, thinner than inner tube and slick so you can pull them.
Just my 2 cents worth, can't see spending good money for something that is an answer to a NON problem, and can cause a problem in a reload. Take care...Jim
Thank for enlighting me on that, I guess just shoving empty mags into the top your smock is just a Brit thing.

I used to tuck my BDU top in and drop the mags down my shirt. Still do if it is gonna be too much trouble to mess with the D Ring.

I'd rather have a problem trying to clip the empty mag on my D ring after I have done battle, than have a problem trying to get to a mag durring battle.. If the 550 cord loop isnt "open" and I dont have the time to mess with it, it is cargo pocket time or down the shirt like GG suggests.
Keep things simple, forget the 550 and the magpull. Is it really that hard to pull the mag from the pouch!!!
It is when you're cold, soaked, shaking, scared to death and your fingers are numb from a 5-hour sitting ambush position.

Amen brother Veil! Plus the loop helps finding a loaded mag under the same conditions by touch even with gloves. As empty mags are returned to the pouch, when able(hate rattley smocks), with feed lips up for visual ID.But with ka- ka -cold hands even touch fails so the loop helps, when you can not remove your eyes from you sector and have to reload.

So you guys are saying that the 550 is there mostly for cold weather situations?
The reasons I don't like the loop on mags:
It could snag on brush or your gear.
It relies on tape which could give way when wet.
It gets in the way of disassembling the mag.
IMHO, the loop is probably a better idea for swat teams.
Ah...nope, good in all weather, have used it for years and never caught it on brush, the big black strap called a sling will catch though =80. No tape is used in it's construction, and comes off with the floor plate when cleaning the magazine.
Take a short length of 550 cord and gut it(remove the inner strands) tie a single knot on each end. Then partially remove mag floor plate put one of the knotted ends on each side of floor plate and slide it back to locked position...instant mag pull, cost $ .02! No tape used!( you can wrap some 100mph tape around the lower part of mag. to quiet it when in mag pouch but not needed for loop). To clean the loop is removed with the magazine floor plate and does not get in the way.
Guess the plastic jobs are more impressive and costly so have to be better...wanna buy a fishing lure 8)

Hmmm...I thought that the tape was used to secure the loop.
I guess you learn something new everyday.
But I still preferr the bare mag.

JY,
I take it that you put your full mags in your pouch with the lips facing down and the empty mags with the lips facing up? I used to do this as well until I was did some training in a very sandy area. Sand accumulated at the bottom of the pouch and fouled the lips of the loaded mags. Is this just a design flaw of Canadian ammo pouches?
Also, what does everyone think of the speed with which you can open an LC2 pattern ammo pouch and remove a magazine. Seems awefully slow. There must be a better system, more amenable to speed reloads.

Hi recce_o;
That's correct about placement of mags in pouch. I have operated in desert conditions and have found sand and other material can enter the pouch both through the drain and top and will foul mags either way, crawling will scoop the crud right in on belt and vest pouches. So I always use either the issue mag caps or condoms over mag lips. When placed down in a full pouch they will usually pull off when the mag is removed, if not they are easy to remove, the condoms tear easy and if a tab of tape is placed on it's end will rip off quickly. The advantage of the issue is when time allows you can return them to the empty mags.If not carry spare condoms to seal them.(good shoot off muzzle caps too). Sand and even gravel will work it's way into any gear not sealed and the cheapest insurance is a pocket full of condoms.
Think the best set up for speed is a velcro flapped pouch with a 550 "tail", or as on the LBV, a nylon tab to rip it open with. But prefer a C-Mag when large amounts of ordnance is expected to be expended, avoid the rush.
Take care ...Jim, Sine Pari
