There's been a lot of talk on here about how US forces are switching to the M4 for CQB, replacing the venerable MP5. I'm just curious, how wide-spread is this trend? The next time we see GSG-9, the SAS, or whatever other western spec-ops team storming a building on the evening news, will they be carrying shortened assault rifles? Also, in the rescue in Peru a few years ago, someone told me the Peruvians carried Aug Steyr's (or is that Steyr AUG?) - is that true? I watched it on CNN, but I forget what their weapons were.

Thanks!

Most of the agencies you would likely see storming a building are still going to be using subgons. The only one you regularly "see" using carbines now are the Israelis and US local police. I would think within five years just about everybody will be packing carbines

The pictures i have seen on Peru show a few P90s, a few Mini-Uzis and mostly different MP5 configurations with the assaulters. If AUGs were used they would have probably been with the support elements, but I haven't seen any in pictures.

Actually Israelis never used subguns on a wide scale in CQB and like today mainly by the rappelling elements in the entry team. In all other cases it was AK’s until the 80’s and M16 family from that time, With Galil SAR for a short while in between.
