There are quite a few people on this board who know a lot about weapons. What magazines and journals do you guys read to keep abreast of the latest developments in this field?

If only I could get subscriptions to them all...

:-)

Seriously, once a year I grab the Janes Infantry Weapons of the World yearbooks and go from there. But there's lots of other good sources out there as well...

Soldier of Fortune
Gun World

Or go to K-mart and Wal-Mart and see for yourself.

Thanks Mike, but most of the news stand magazines only cover the topic at a superficial level. Reading them alone would never get one to the level of some of the people who frequent this board. In addition, a lot of the stuff contained in the news stand magazines is written by gun room commandos. And finally, they can't be accorded 100% reliability because their desire to attract advertisers introduces bias.

Guns & weapons for Law Enforcement is a good mag.

Try Small Arms Review, Nick Steadman's online journal and Virginia Ezell's newsletter.

hi recce_o;

The Institute for Research on Small Arms in international security is a good source, http://www.smallarmsresearch.org/

also Tactical Shooter magazine, http://www.tacticalshooter.com
This is about the best magazine out there on sniping and also M4/M16 weapon systems. They have some free articles at the site, one of interest is about the .408 Cheye Tac a new sniper round in developement(May issue)

They are also a good source for other publications and books.

Enjoy, my friend. take care...Jim

Don't put to much faith in Jane's infantry Weapons. The quality has dropped markedly and the 2000-2001 is full of omissions and errors. Really sad to see a good publication tank.

Janes is like any other source, you have to take it and confirm the data inside from other souces as well! Besides Janes IWOTW Yearbooks have started to go downhill since Ian left... something about Terry Gander telling the reader in the foreward that we need gun control is not a positive sign.

I concur with JY on Tactical Shooter magazine. In addition to the sniping & M4/AR15, they also address certain hangun issues from an intelligent perspective.

-Guns & Weapons for LE
-IRSAIS
-Small Arms Review
-Jane's International Defense Review
-RAIDS (occasionally has some small arms articles, but is offered only in French).

Like JY and some of the others here, I also try to pick up Jane's Infantry Weapons every (or, every other) year or so to keep up with the latest, but like many other things, even an older edition of this yearbook (supplemented with good magazines and other more up to date sources) will keep you pretty much up to speed. I agree with the others when they say the quality of this publication has slipped since Ian V. Hogg's departure...sad.
