I'm looking for a good tent. I want something that can hold two people, is rain proof, sturdy, and light. I stress the importance of sturdy and rain-proof. I don't want the thing to fall on me when it's raining. I already travel light when I camp, so weight isn't extremely important, as long as it isn't as heavy as the rest of my gear combined. If you could tell me about a tent that fits these needs, I'd really appreciate it.

if you are looking for a place to civilian buy a tent or any other outdoor equipment, try www.campmor.com (http://www.campmor.com)

They are one of the largest outdoor stores in the NE. Great store, too bad they arent a nationwide..

Another good place is Johnson Worldwide Associates located in Binghamton NY. Once a year they have a factory clearance/seconds/blow out sale. www.jwa.com (http://www.jwa.com) is the link. They make Eureka tents, as well as a ton of other well known outdoor brands. Off the subject, Eureka makes the USMC combat tent and also the new Modular GP tents. The Modulars are good tents, but weigh a ton and take up the better half of a 5 ton to transport.

Im sure you will find something that works for you in Campmor.

The sturdiest tent on the market, which is also very light and water resistent would be a North Face. But you will deffinately be paying some money for them. There is also Mountain Gear who makes very nice tents. But again, both of these are very pricey brands, but I can assure you they will be nothing but the best. If you dont want to pay that much then like someone else mentioned, EMS or REI make some good tents for very reasonable prices.
hope this helps a bit

All,

Im my opinion, the best Issue backpackable personal tents are the LEWS. I saw one once, it was great. The 4 man is made by Northface and the 3 man by JWA. Good luck finding one on the civy surplus market.. The prices the GOVT pays for them are crazy in my opinion, but Uncle tends to do that...
Check them out at: http://ct.dscp.dla.mil/ctinfo/basecamp/lews/lews.html

North Face makes civie tents that are just as good. Not terribly hard to find em. What kind of weather are you planning on going in with a tent?? Summer/Winter/snow storms/???

I camp in summer, spring, and early fall (probably should have mentioned that) and I try to avoid heavy rains.

then almost any tent will work, and you dont really need a super sturdy one for that. If you are going to only camp around summer time I would reccommend going with like an EMS brand tent or something similair. They make all their models after good tent designers, and you cant really beat the prices. You can probably tell I prefer name brands, but they are not neccesary. If you dont have tons of cash I would check out EMS or REI or Kelty or something similar.
hope this helps at least the slightest.

Anyone know a good tent for Arctic/Polar conditons. Low-observability is a plus.

Snake,

If your unit is looking for one,(read as "if you dont have to pay for it") check the LEWS. They were made for that sort of stuff. The companies also make civy versions of the LEWS, I dont know what model names they call them. Erueka and Northface make the LEWS, Im sure if you call them they can Xref it for you..
