Is there any long-term experiences about Peltor Tactical Electronical Hearing Protectors? http://www.peltor.com
I`ve tried them a bit, I like them, but how durable they are? How they work in very cold?

Hi Snow,

Iv'e used Peltor's Sound Trap hearing protection for about a year now both on the range and on excercise. Although I've yet to use them in really arctic conditions they have worked well so far, and I'm very satisfied. The only problem I've had was when one of thr batteries developed corrosion after a particularly wet exercise, resulted in a howling sound that had me scared for a while but after i changed the batteries and got rid of the rust that stuck to the battery compartment they have worked fine.

Soud Traps have a slight problem because the screw type switches tend to turn on when for examle in your pocket, the batteries last surprisingly long however but since they are a pain to change in field conditions I have developed the following S.O.P: New batteries before EVERY excercise, old batteries on the range. Havent seen the new Comtacs live yet but they seem good, a bit expensive though. By the way, I heard the swedes (our good old enemy;-) are planning to put active hearing protectors on general issue.

This spring we had some green electronic Peltors on trial in my company. Just had a look at the Peltor site, didnt find the exact model there. It looked like the Tactical, but there was a battery box on one ear for 2 AA batteries.
We only had them for 2 months or so, had to wear them all the time on exercise under our helmets. Squadleaders got a microphone that they could mount on the earmuffs, that went onto our regular radios. The squadleaders were pretty excited about the system and the radio interface.
I felt uncomfy with my helmet on, but maybe I just needed a size larger.
Plus it got very hot underneath them during assaults.

Thanks for your info, I guess I should invest on Tacticals. BTW, changing the batteries seemed to be something I wouldn`t try in cold temperatures...
