The current issue bag is called the Modular Sleeping Bag System. It has 4 parts. 1 stuff sack, goretex bivy cover(1/2 tan and 1/2 woodland, and the tan side goes down), black intermediate bag and a green patrol bag. They system is pretty good, however, it is all synthetic materials, and they are not forgiving AT ALL about brushing against something hot like a potbelly or propane stove. I have seen literally hundreds of them get sent to DRMO due to burns/melting from contacting armored vehicle heaters and stoves. The old ones (Cotton/synthetic Intermediate/Extreme cold weather sleeping bags)were a little forgiving(they didnt instantly burn/melt upon contact with a stove. The new ones do in a heartbeat).
It is a slick system, and will keep you very warm when used properly. Put a issue Thermarest under it and you are golden for all climates.
US CAV sells them for exorbanant prices, however, the surplus stores outside the gate here get $175-200 for them. Check US CAV's description, it is pretty accurate. The older stuff sacks had problems with the seams blowing out, but that was fixed with the 98 contract buy of the systems, as that stuff sack had lateral webbing straps on it that stopped the seams from blowing out.
It is pretty lightweight and you can take just the parts you need for the mission/anticipated weather conditions. The whole thing can be compacted in the stuff sack to the size a little larger than a basketball when packed properly.
Over all, my guys like it much much better than the old one.

The bag that is current issued that I described is also little known as the 2nd version or the MOD 3. It is called the MOD 3 for the 3 sleeping bags (Intermediate, Patrol, and the Bivy cover)
There was a first production version (MOD 2) that was issued mainly to the USMC that was like the MSBS, but only had one sleeping bag(thick and green, much like the black intermediate one of the current MSBS), the all Woodland colored goretex cover, and a stuff sack. It was replaced by the MSBS. It had a green stuff sack and had EXTREME COLD written on the front of the thick green sleeping bag.
If you really want me to dig both types out of the closet to get you the NSNs, let me know..

Shadow,
check out this site: www.wiggys.com (http://www.wiggys.com) "Wiggy" is the manufacturer of the bag that 10th SFG uses. If you get a bag that the regular Army uses it'll probably be sub-standard and be produced by the lowest bidder. I've used Wiggy bags at -20 and kept as warm as can be expected at those temps, Nalgene bottles are a big help when it gets that cold...

Hot tip: It's not -20 if you're sleeping so close to a stove that your bag gets burned. Maybe someone head is up their 4th point of contact if they're burning up sleeping bags...
WOW! Great prices! I like the FTRSS system
anybody used this one?

Another good one is the Snugpak. Hard to find outside of the UK, packs very small about the size of a loaf of bread, OD nylon lined in and out, boxed foot so you can leave your boots on. I've got the Merlin 3 model, good to about -5C. Works even better with a bivybag.
I second the wiggy's endorsement.
I'v got my system here and compared to the system the Army Tech's have, it's much better quality. I've got some other stuff from them also. All top quality.

Shopping for a new sleeping bag. What's the best non-down fill going these days? Concerns (in priority) are price, comfort in the 20-40f deg range, compressibility, durability, looks. Don't care about colour, I've got a OD goretex bivy to put it in.

Hi Tony;
The best advise I can give you is go to Wiggy's site a read all he wrote on the Voonder fabrics and such. Then make your decision. Wiggy is a very out spoken but knows what works, he supplies a lot of SF teams with great gear.

Like JY said, Wiggy's supplies many SF teams with bags. I was issued their modular bag (good down to -40, and that's not simply marketing hype) at 10 SFG, as was everyone else, and even the boys that spent a good deal of time in the Norwegian winters had no complaints. Just my observations, of course.
