View Full Version : Getting into BUD/S

Is there a minimum grade average in high school that is needed to enter BUD/S?? All I found is info about the ASVAB....

Grades do not enter into it, only ASVAB...although whether or not you graduate from H.S. WILL be a consideration.

Bone up on your math and science if you have doubts about your academic background. Far too many guys who think they can coast on their physical gifts end up getting performance dropped for academic reasons...or because they can't deal with the daily discipline/authority (the same problems they may have had with HS.)

If someone did poorly in HS (not saying that YOU did...), I would question why they think the Navy will be better for them (since there is more authority, more discipline, "homework" to advance within your rate...etc.) Don't underestimate the mental aspects of training and daily life.

If you couldn't stand the work in HS (taking notes long hours in classrooms etc...take a short simple A school because if ya take something longer you'll be spending alot of time in a classroom I guarentee it...not to mention classroom stuff in boot camp too...so if ya go in be ready for it..but don't stress over it...its not that bad...

With the exception of the nuke and other 6 year programs like the advanced electronics program, academics in the enlisted Navy is a joke. That doesnt mean you should use it as an excuse to slack off in high school or not try to get a good ASVAB score...quite the opposite. But lets face it. The enlisted Navy community is not full of rocket scientists. Lots of high school droputs in there and lots of guys who barely graduated from high school as well. The Nuke and various other six year programs have some smart guys in it. But the run of the mill Navy is not all that smart.

It is mainly mechanical, technical and leadership aptitude the Navy is looking for in its enlisted ranks, rather than pure academic ability. It is a hands on, physical reality in there. Tons of mechanical stuff. I was told when I was in the Navy boot camp was designed for the equivalent of an 8th grade reading level...or maybe that was 5th grade reading level I cant remember.

Either way, dont expect to serve with a lot of Auburn or Duke graduates when you are in there, cause it aint gonna happen.

Rat have you even you been to Navy boot camp? It doesn't sound like you have, but I'm sure it's not the way you describe it, or should I say the person who told you described it... And besides if a person was as you say a 'Auburn or Duke graduate' why wouldn't they go to OCS instead of enlist?

Sure I have, but it was a long time ago in the late eighties and I was sent home for knee probs.

Why would they even care about your knee if you don't do that much PTing there.....

And I thought you said before you lived in Veit Nam and you were in the military over there...

Rat you went through in the 80's and got sent home with a knee problem? what'd you do throw yourself outa the top rack on purpose or something the only guys that got hurt in my division were guys that did it on purpose (slamming their head into a wall...dropping a large fan on their foot etc)...I'm here now and was just there...I GUARENTEE what I said was accurate and what you said has as much basis as a going and profecizing over a pile of shit in the middle of the street...only 6 year programs are hard my ass...you goto EM school or IC and see if the academics are hard...hell swing by GM school and sit in class for a couple days...you will see that the enlisted guys/girls can be/are rocket scientists in their own right...The Navy does not acept drop outs or idiots...you must have a diploma or equivelence to get in...and if you can't hack it they send ya to seaman ATD. I'll tell ya what...a majority of the guys/girls I know in nuke screw up the simplest things(called "nuking it")..so they aren't always smart...So until you can give correct info don't give speils on things you don't know...

No, my knees were already fucked up from high school sports and tons of backpacking when I enlisted and shipped out. I kind of ignored some pain I had been having when I signed up. I was totally stupid I will be the first to admit. Caused lots of bad vibes. I had the Divefarer program with Gunners Mate as my rate. I was in a hurry to get out of town. There were no second chances for me. I was written off by the Command. I still feel guilty about it to this day.

I fucked up, and the reason was cause I was not honest with myself as far as my knees went when I signed up. I accept full responsibility for that, even though I do wish the navy would have given me a second chance.

Also, when I did it there WERE tons of high school dropouts in there that I didnt click with and maybe that has changed...but Im really skeptical it has changed much. I was like "why the fuck are they even here?" I didnt like the part about where it seemed like half the people in there were dropouts, I think half the NCOs were high school dropouts who were insecure of themselves and jealous of anybody who was halfway successful or had their shit together. I know all the recruiters were like that.

I had trouble taking orders from NCOs I knew were high school dropouts, when I was an Eagle Scout and athlete and high school grad and good guy overall who had never done drugs before and never had been arrested. Id say almost everybody in there had been arrested at least once prior to the Navy. I feel like one of the reasons it was not handled well was cause half the NCOs in charge of me were total idiot high school dropouts. I know for a fact that I had one in charge of me who could not read or spell basic words. And he was the main NCO in charge of me. I had absolutely no respect for him.

When I did it I would say 50% in there were high school dropouts. Sure most had their GEDs but that is not a real diploma.

Maybe it really has changed...Im very skeptical though. After my experience I wondered why they couldnt fix it so you could just go directly to SEAL Headquarters to enlist in the program you want and deal directly with SEALs from the beginning, rather than go thru all the in between non SEAL idiots in the regular Navy.

I'll agree with you on that...

fruit on a popsicle stick - if your genetically inferior frame couldn't hack bootcamp, then how on earth would you have expected to make it thru BUD/S???

I just told you before, my knees were already fucked up BEFORE I even enlisted at MEPS. I enlisted with bad knees, lied about it(or ignored it I was not really lying about it) and when I got there I realized how fucked up my knees were. My knees were so stiff when I arrived I could barely walk. Let alone run. I had really bad overuse knee problems from high school sports, cross country, track, wrestling, lots of backpacking. When I shipped out, I felt like I was between a rock and a hard place. On the one hand I really did want to do the SEAL thing, but on the other hand my knees were severely fucked up and I could barely even run or anything anymore without GREAT pain and stiffness. It was just a generally fucked up situation.

I wanted to go home and let my knee probs heal up and come back another day but they were so mad at me forget about it.

It was all my fault though, I was stupid to enlist in that condition. I got what I deserved. I had extremely bad judgement when I was 18 or 19. And I always felt like because I was dealing with non SEALs nobody understood my injury problems or where I was coming from.

Shit on a stick has just exposed himself as the selfproclaimed hiking/PT GURU from NC who went under many handles
such as (but not limited to) "Erick" & "Bundy Shoe Salesman Commando". A SEAL wannabe Gunners Mate who the Navy sent home to his momma for whining.

and yet in the previous post he said he went to Boot Camp and had to leave from high school overuse of his knees, but according to the shit above he was in Viet Nam... http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/confused.gif sounds like bull-shit to me!
