View Full Version : Ranger to SF

Hi,
I'm currently a Ranger in 2nd Battalion and was wondering if any of you could help me out with some questions I had.
I've been here in B CO. for 9 months, in a weapons squad. I've enjoyed it, but am looking for a new challenge because all I seem to do is set in a tripod and link rounds. I joined the Army because I like Special Operations, I didn't join for college money or anything like that.
Anyway I was interested in going to SFAS and I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the possibility of going to SF from Ranger Batt.... do you need to have been in Battalion for 2 yrs. before trying out for SFAS? I'm only an e-3 and haven't gotten the chance to go to Ranger School yet. If it's not possible to go from Ranger Battalion, would it be possible to quit Ranger Battalion and than apply for SF from a regular Army unit?
thanks for your help
specwardog.

First, don't quit the Regiment.
Second, talk to your squad leader and platoon sergeant about moving to a rifle squad. Don't tell them you want to go to SFAS; just that you want to 'diversify' your skills. Plus, it's getting old just setting tripods and linking belts; which was my very first job in the Army also :-) On a good day, I got to set the T&E mechanism too!
Third, go to Ranger School; it's a good school that will serve you well later on.
Take the long view on this situation, because a CAREER in this business is 7,305 days long. You've only done about 275 days.

As a former B Co 2/75 1st Plt Weapons Squad member hang on to your horses ( like Tracy said) soon enough you will get your chance and it's better to go as a e4/e5 Ranger qualified hard charger than as you are now.Good Luck and God Bless.

swd:
Tracy and RangerHazen are giving you some excellent advice; you'd be a first-class idiot to not pay attention to it.
When I first became a LRRP, I had to spend 19 months in Commo Platoon driving GamaGoats (M-561 6×6 articulated 1¼-Ton — way before your time), attending to the care and feeding of my Base Radio Station's M-60 and "go-fering" in the TOC during FTX's before I finally earned the privilege of humping a PRC-74 for a LRRP Team.
Consider the slot you're in at the moment: you're paying your dues! Every "high-speed" operator started out the same way. Keep in mind that every last one of your NCO's — and every last individual who will be interviewing/instructing/evaluating you if/when you get to SFAS — started out in the same situation: as a peon.
Stick with Batt for now. Soak up everything your NCO's (and the more experienced SP4's for that matter) can hammer into you, get Tabbed, prove to your chain of command you can handle greater responsibilities when they get handed to you (it wiil happen in time), and then worry about SFAS. It'll make you a better SF'er in the long run if you're selected.

He can't help it. Guy was the Army's lead instructor and chief developer of COO (Consideration Of Others) training and he believes in it so much that he just can't let it go. Guy, you have to let it go. Even though you are a COO commando, you have to start letting people know how you really feel.

Guy, you said what I was thinking. Who in the hell in their right mind would post that on a public board? The only reason is that he has already quit in his heart and now he's looking for a way to justify his quitting.
I guess Batt was a little too hard for him, perhaps he can do better in another unit.

How do you become a Ranger without going through Ranger School. Don't you have to go through Ranger School to be qualified as a Ranger and get the tab?

I wonder how his squad leader or gunner would react to his initial post? "All I do is link rounds..." LOL!!!!
Whether you are a gunner, assistant gunner, or ammo bearer, no matter if you are a cherry e-nothing or a tabed e-4, if your in a weapons squad you are on top of the food chain. You are chosen to provide 70% of your platoons firepower, you should take some serious pride in that.

My grandfather told me many things that I use in my day-to-day life but one that I think about the most is:
"The only regrets in life that you can live with are the regrets of things you wish you wouldn't have done... Its the things you wish you WOULD have done that will stick with you forever..."
My grandfather did 12 tours in WW2 as a waist (Mid) gunner on a B-17.
I regret every day that I never Got Airborne-Ranger in my initial contract so I could have served in a Ranger Batt. You don't realise how fucking lucky you are Grunt! You are a member of the WORLD'S ELIET LIGHT INFANTRY FORCE. You need to suck it up and drive on with your current mission. You will look back at the time that your in now with no regret. I think you need to "scan your lane." I would worry about being the best Ranger I could be before I went after SF. Get your "Tab" and become at least a team leader before you move on. I'm not "Tabbed" so I'm speeking of what I know, you will always regret it if you don't...and you will all the more, haveing had the oppurtunity to go to Ranger School by being in 2nd Batt. You sound like a rich man crying poor, so shut up, and drive on!
Your glass ain't half empty it half full, and then some!
Suck it up!!!!!

wardog, i am not a ranger but i do know this. you are doing what every fucking grunt in the army wants to do. why the thought that you could be a better sf soldier by going to a unit that would lick the boot of any pvt in the 75th is beyond me. i know it feel slike everyone is chewing your ass, but listen to them. the grass is greener on your side.

Actually, 9ID cased their colors long before 93. 9th Infantry Regiment, however, was at Lewis for a time, shortly after 7ID vanished. Last I heard, the Manchus moved over to Korea to set up shop when elements of the 25th and 2d showed up to Lewis.

7th ID vanished?...
Actually they're at Ft.Carson, where they can continue to be ignored by the Army.
The 9th(Manchu-THIS!)was moved to Ft.Lewis and de-activated in 1994.They had three battalions at Ft Ord when I left. Each one uglier than the last....or was that four?

Actually, Wolfhound, I think the 7th ID was deactivated for a couple years and was recently (less then a year ago?) reactivated as Division HQ for three NG brigades. I could be wrong.
The 2nd ID's brigade @ Lewis is involved in the Medium BDE transition project. For the 2nd ID's reinforcing BDE, they're using something out of III Corps (the Brigade of 1st ID in the U.S. maybe?) I also thought it was TWO brigades that were being transitioned.. what is the other one? Is the the 25th's BDE @ Lewis?

abaustin, that's right about 7ID. they and the 24ID(M) are back online as division hq's for NG maneuver BDE'S. I don't see being used for anything dangerous like PEACEKEEPING for a while.....
as CSM Jim Digby told me a few months back,
"it may be a sorry ass war, but it's the only war we got"
and thanks for the info on the MED BDE

Ok, it was my fault to not talk about 7ID's reactivation at Carson, but it was intentional, as they are not the same 7ID as was at Ord, as explained above. I know the 9th IN Rgt did move to Korea for a bit following their time at Lewis, as I had a couple buddies assigned to them there following IOAC. Don't know how long that lasted, though.

abaustin, you are correct.7thID was deactivated in 1994 and re-activated last year. They are sort of a rallying point for NG units. The 7th actually has a unit from Oregon(?) in the Balkans right now.
Razor, don't feel bad.The 7thID at Ft Carson should not be confused with the 7thID(L) of Ft.Ord....Two very different animals
