First, you have to be an uniformed officer. The Secret Service is divided between special agents (college degree required) and the Uniformed Service. Ususally, 2-3 years of guarding embassies to the White House, plus top physical condition will get you in.

Actually Mike, the CAT teams are made up of special agents. The CST (counter sniper teams) draw its members from the uniformed division. Both teams work in concert during protection details.

If I remember correctly the Special Agents are assigned to the CAT, Uniformed guys are assigned to either the CST (Counter Sniper Team) or ERT (Emergency Response Team).

The CAT was formed in response the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan.

I've got a friend at work who just finished up all of his paper work for the Uniformed Secert Service (he's been working on it for two years), and is waiting for htem to finish his background check up.

I can check with him for the exact requirements.

Interesting that I saw this post. I spoke with the recruiting agent in my area last week and this topic came up. He said CAT and CST have positions that contain both SA and Uniformed.
He also mentioned Special Officer positions that are, as far as he knew, Uniform - Guys at the ranch....apparently get some additional training.

I asked what the make of a CAT guy was. He said a guy that could run til he pukes and smile about it. He said one has to be tough, smart, and not affected by home sickness.

I think I will go with what the Secret Service Agent who was once on the team told me.

I've noticed the influx of new personnel posting on these boards. If you would take the time and read thru all the forums. The evidence would point you in the direction of "who...knows what they are talking about".

Take a good look at the gentlemen avitar just above your last post...Hint...Cough! Get my drift?;)

Take care.
