Can anyone provide some info on the Uniformed division; duties and responsibilities, pros & cons, personal opinions, etc.

Thanks

I've got a friend (former Marine) who got picked up by them. It took two years for them to complete his background check.

Theres also a little info on the USSS website on their responsibilities and hiring info. Also check out a book called Federal jobs in law enforcement, by ARCO Publications. The same people who put out all of the test study giudes.

To some extent, USSS UD and Capitol Police are stepping stones for people seeking employment at other agencies. The White House branch offers much less action than Foreign Missions Branch which does more patrol activities on D.C. streets. A few years back, USSS UD FMB officers were actively involved in street law enforcement assisting Metropolitan Police; I'm not sure what the status of this program is currently.

USSS UD is certainly a very professional outfit. If you're looking for uniformed federal work with a possibility of assignment to tactical work, consider the United States Park Police. USPP has contingents in D.C., New York City, and San Francisco. They have smaller offices elsewhere to support National Park Service Law Enforcement Rangers and will deploy nationwide. Their day-to-day duties involve more general-purpose law enforcement than USSS UD.

For more information on USSS UD or other federal agencies, checkout www.lawenforcementjob.com. (http://www.lawenforcementjob.com.) Good luck and be safe.

There was a long article in Newsweek in about a month ago about the low level of morale in the uniformed division. You could probably find the article online. Basically said they were really overworked and were treated like dirt by the plainclothes Secret Service people.

I worked with a couple of SS agents that were former uniformed guys and they had nothing but good things to say about the UD.

They are a good bunch but the job contains long hours with little or no time off. You work in a enviroment inwhich everybody is a somebody. From interns, staffers, and on up. It's no wonder why people get burned out fast. The money isn't bad and it's a good stepping stone to another Fed job.

I have that issue. The Fraternal Order of Police in D.C. issued an announcement discouraging anyone from applying to the Secret Service, Uniformed or Specil Agent. It also talked about how Uniformed officers are almost never hired into the Special Agent category.
It stated that the UD was short over 300 officers, and the Special Agent class was short over 100 agents, and that it was not uncommon for them to work 80 + hour work weeks because of man power shortages.

Are USSS-UD Officers 082's, or 1811's?

UD are not 1811's. They attend FLETC(Fed Law Enforcement Training Center) in GA. at the Mixed Basic Police Course for 10 weeks and then have follow on training in MD.

That is correct.

The agents attend the CITP program and have investigative jurisdiction.

Great instructors there, great school. THe FAM's go through the same training before getting on the list. Its a shame some of the USSS guys/gals who jumped ship in favor of the FAM program, now regret doing so. We really need a grass-roots effort here in the US to encourage volunteers to step forward and fill those vancancies. I think the age limit is reducing the possible pool of applicants, but an eighty hour workweek isn't for the meek! I deeply, deeply respect those guys. As they would give their life for the President, I'd give my life for them and not give it a second thought. Americans should be proud to have their service. I know I am!

Do these guys get paid overtime for their 80+ hours or are they getting the shaft somehow by getting LEAP or something along those lines?

I concur, with a good friend in the branch and another who's father spent his whole life there I have heard much the same. My friend has been trying to trade up to another fed service or within the agency with no success over the past four years. And he's a squared away type A, hope that helps.
