I am in the process of acquiring a fixed blade knife for general purposes. There are plenty of knives to choose from, but in my opinion most are too big, too expensive, or just too fancy. One knife I am leaning toward is the Buck-Strider Solution (B888), anyone ever use this knife? What are some favorites being used in the field and what are their highs and lows?

Get a K-bar, they have a ton of sizes and designs and they're cheap enough you won't be pissed if you screw the thing up.
I've got a short (9 1/2 inch total lenth) black blade recurve K-bar I've have about 2 years. Used it for everything from cutting webbing to hammering in tent stakes.
Just my 2 cents.

I absolutely love my Cold Steel Master Hunter. Blade's perfect for skinning and filleting, strong enough for prying, and long enough for killing. Handle's just right for my hand in the sabre grip, modified saber, ice pick, and reverse grip. It's not so long that it gets in the way of the rest of your kit, but is big enough for any chore you got in mind for a knife.
Great knife, all around.

I've got a Buck Nighthawk that has served me really well for 4 years now. Heavy enough to chop with, holds an edge very well, and the handle is non-slip when it gets wet. The blade is bead blasted to be non reflective and the nylon sheath has a kydex insert so it wears well.

I agree that the KBar is hard to beat for the money. As has been posted many times before, a knife is simply a sharp piece of steel. For actual field use, the KBar or a clone works just fine as long as you maintain it and don't try to use it for things it was not intended to do.
I'm still not convinced that a ridiculously expensive knife can outperform the run-of-the-mill Kbar in any really meaningful sense.

Admins, can we move this over to the Firearms/Knives forum?
I like a Bolo. Big heavy chunk of a leafspring with a flimsy wodden handle.
Wouldn't hold an edge at all, but with its weight, it seemed to have no problem chopping through whatever I needed cutting.
Oh, and at $5US, there was no whining if I needed to replace it (of course, the plane ticket to the PI from Mexico, to buy another, "might" be a hinderance....).

cold steel makes a good kukri...
ok, for almost 10 years I have had a Benchmade CQC7 knockoff auto-opener. Have loved it. But having decided it was time for a new ginsu, and having given my benchmade to a young relative joining the service, I now am having trouble finding a knife I like.
Looking for another folder. doesnt have to be an auto-opener, but looking for something with a little bit meatier of a handle than the benchmade and good solid blade that will take a beating if I happen to be hunting/camping and use a rock or maglite on the back of the blade to chop through something.
That benchmade lasted me a good long time.
Anyone have a good solid folder they would brag on?

Not to sound like a smartass, but...
How about a Benchmade CQC7? Mine's lasted me the last 12 years and it's still going strong. It sounds like you had the same experience with your "knockoff". I understand Emerson makes the CQC7 now, but I'm willing to bet his are just as good as the ones Benchmade made for him years ago.

Mine was a Benchmade CQC7 model. Essentially they called it a BM970 or something. I am just looking for something with a little meater handle, doesnt have to be as high speed etc.
Figured for something new, after looking around I thought I might have go back to the CQC7 if I dont find anything else I really like. Almost hated to give it away but told the nephew that when he signed up I would give it to him, for good luck if nothing else.
Kershaw? The handles a little bigger.. they have the assited opening... Serrated and non serrated..
Black Blur – 1670BLK 99.00 list
looks like a good one. Need a slightly bigger blade though.
You carry one Saw7616? Like it?

i've had an automatic Benchmade 9050SBK serrated for the past 4 years. the best thing about it is the grip on the handle. if you want meatier handle and grip, this knife is the one.
http://www.benchmade.com/loading.aspx?model=9050
another one that has a meaty grip that i can think of is the Gerber Gator grip, and it's only a fraction of the price of a BM. it won't disappoint you.

yeah, same here, i'm really not a Gerber guy. i think that they use too soft of a metal for knife and tool abusers such as myself, but the price is always right. the grip on that Gator is more than decent btw.
the only thing i don't like about the Gator is the sheath it comes in, it's durable nylon, however, the grip on that knife is so strong that it doesn't go in and out tactially at all.
cheers.
Take a look at this one. I have one and I love it. It has the biggest chunk of steel for a blade I have ever seen on a folder and a big meaty handle. I also carry Microtechs, but I am careful about how I use them as they are expensive. I've had two AFO's. This knife is better. I've had half a dozen Gerbers and broke every damn one. Their steel is too brittle. This knife is virtually indestructible and is only $100.00 or so. Get one in your hand and you'll see what I mean.

If you had the Benchmade "Emerson," why not upgrade to the Emerson "Emerson?" Their knives are better than Benchmade anyways. Or just go for a Strider.

If you were happy with the CQC7, but the scales were a little small for you, try the Commander. Scales are a tad larger, blade is a little less 'high speed' more a 'general purpose' configuration.
Could be worth a try?
Best of luck with your choice.
10 years of service from Benchmade would make my decision easy. I have one that is working great for me and will gladly fork out for another when the time comes. Good luck in the search and remember to keep the edge sharp.

I would highly reccomend EMERSON (with the wave feature)
Specifically the Emerson Commander, it has an unbelieveable feel to it, perfectly fits the your hand (and your pants) and opens faster than any auto.
To be honest, until the patent expires on the wave feature, I would not even consider another folding knife maker, its just that awesome.
Pull it out...ITS OPEN
Commander can be had on ebay for $150, carries lifetime warrantee.
Like the Wave huh? I checked out the Gerber Gator grips and I like the grip, I just hate gerbers. And the benchmade emerson lasted so long I am going to take a look at the Commander.

I loved the feel of it but I am very rough on knives and needed somthing stronger.

yeah, it seems as though Gerber uses soft metals to make their tools and knives. i had a Gerber multi-tool in Iraq, and one side of the plier levers broke clean off while normal usage. i was very disappointed.
however, it's more of a knife thing that tips break off; i think it really depends on what you use it for. i'm a big abuser when it comes to knives and tools.
if i were to ever want a reliable knife that didn't break in any way, i'd buy a good, one-sided fixed blade. they can take a beating.

I would recommend the Buck Strider in D2. I spoke to Duane Dwyer about them a couple of years ago and he said that the biggest difference between them, and an actual Strider is the hand fitting of all the parts. He said that the quality control in the Bucks met Strider standards and that they abused the hell out of them in the production test runs. Every time there was something lacking, Strider made them fix it. The quality in materials is supposed to be exemplary, but that the fit and finish is pretty much what you can expect from a production knife as opposed to a production custom. I personally carry a Chris Reeve large Sebenza. I found it in a pawn shop for 40 bucks. It is such a nice and rugged knife that I would have an extremely hard time going back to anything lesser.:)

Gerber's really gone to hell the last few years. I have one of their older EZ-Outs, and it's great. The newer, skeletonized version is a POS. Had an older Gator, gave it to my father, and he broke its tip. He uses it as a knife/screwdriver. If you like that sort of thing, check out the Razel:
http://www.grahamknives.com/razel_info.htm
My current main-use EDC is this:
http://www.knivesplus.com/KA-4062-KABAR.HTML
A very sturdy knife, remarkable for the price, takes a super edge, and the tip is kind of reinforced by the blade's shape. There are other blade designs, including serrated, but I think this is the strongest.
There are always Spydercos. The Al Mar SERE 2000 is a piece of work. I'm currently holding out for this little number, been waiting for it a long time (assisted opener, too, and they offer a non-assisted version):

Probably a little too little too late, but...
The Buck Strider SBMF is a nice Buck production of a Strider design. VERY meaty in the hand with a nice strong blade.
The Emerson Commander has already been recommended and is a good blade.
If you like something with a deeper in the pocket type carry, check out some of the SOG folders... several have decent spear points sharpened on both edges (at least for the first 1/4 to 1/2 inch or so) for better penetration should you need / value that.
Here is a real great place for buying knives

Another vote for Emerson. Sharpens well unlike a lot of small folders. Mine has been well used and the blade is still as good as the day I bought it.

I owned a couple of the original Buck Strider tantos and one of the spear points. Very solid knives. I used one while I was a deputy, continuing it into my career as a diesel mechanic. I used the knife during a search warrant on a camp trailer to break a lock. I had to actually kick the handle of the knife. It broke the camper lock but did not harm the knife at all. Just some scratches.
Then later, as a mechanic, I scraped gaskets, cut rubber hoses, etc. Finally broke the tip off trying to budge a slack adjuster that was rusted to an S-cam.
I gave that knife after grinding a new tip onto it to a friend. Then bought a new one. Someone ran off with it though. I will buy another one soon, however.
Great knives, very strong. Well worth the money.

My every day carry knife is a Emerson 'Super' CQC7 with 'wave action' and tanto point. It's big and is faster opening then a most of the auto knives on opening, once you know how to work it.
I don't recommend using any good knife for prying open locks or as a pry bar, etc.

My insanely overpriced gift but a hell of a folder/utility knife.
Big beefy and 100% dependable. The sheath and it's attachment
loops did not last long, but the blade and body have been perfect.
Not a concealable by any means but as a field blade it cannot be beat

On top: Emerson CQC-7 Super
2nd. Emerson CQC-8
3rd. Chris Reeve Sebenza
I have used the CQC-7 the most but i try to rotate them regularly.
I had a Emerson Commander but i gave that away as a birthday gift.
The wave feature is a neat thing to have and when i have the Sebenza in my EDC i miss it.
If i was used to BM 970 and wanted a similar knif i would go with the CQC-7 Super.
Ps. Sorry for the crappy pic.

What would be a nice folding knife for a rather inexpensive price, these are all expensive aren't they?
Hell, all I have is a kabar$39.99, a fake kabar $20 and a SOG dive knife which I believe was around $39-$49. As far as folding knifes all I have is a few cheap ones that I bought at the a surplus store for the wife to carry.
Also where do you all find these ones that you speak of? I see these in the blackhawk mags and that is way beond what I want to spend. I believe there called MOD which all seem to be 200 plus.

I've owned quite a few knives from Cold Steel, Spyderco, Gerber, Kershaw.....ect. but I always ended up carrying my Emerson. He has a bunch of good designs and the wave is much faster then any auto. If money is no object then check out the Strider SMF. I love the way it fit in my hand. Good positive feel. If thats not in the price range the buck strider is a great little knife too. Just sandpaper down the grip or it will tear up you pants and your hands.

Define "expensive". How much is too much?
My Benchmade CQC7 cost ~$100, but I've been carrying it since 1995. If you spread the cost over time, it's like $8 a year. IMO, you get what you pay for. If I was spending less than $100, I'd get a CRKT. You can find a nice one for less than $50 and they are pretty well built.

I know I'm a little late on this one but I have a nice little collection of knives including 8 Benchmades (love them), 2 CRKT (ok), 2 Gerbers (again OK), and my new baby a CQC-15 Emerson Wave Folder. The Emerson is by far my favorite. If you haven't carried an Emerson or had to use it in a snap then you won't understand. The Wave is just amazing. Check it out here: http://www.emersonknives.com/miva/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=EK&Category_Code=CQC15
For any of those interested in an Emerson don't get upset about the prices on there website. If you spend some time searching for one on EBAY you can get a great deal. I got mine for $150 brand new out of the box. The price on the Emerson page has it listed at $220.

Carried an Emerson CQC-7 with Wave into Iraq in 2003 - with follow-on duty as HRS contractor - only added a strip of skateboard tape to the grip but otherwise very reliable and handy CQB folder.
Today the pocket carry mix includes a Strider "Nightmare" and Emerson Bowie. Both are excellent pocket carry pieces with sure opening/lock-up and easy to maintain edges (correct blade geometry in the design phase).
Recently found a Benchmade CQC-7 "black blade" with serration. Brand new in box at local knife show. It is a favorite and kept tucked away as a "keeper".

Emerson Wave CQC-7 mini. Got it since 2005. Still as good as new. Probably one of the good 80$ I've invested in my life.
I was also a big fan of the Spyderco Tasman Salt Serrated. I tragically lost it in a diving accident.
I have carried the Emerson Commander for a few years now and am pretty happy with it. It's never been abused and the edge seems to hold up well.
There's a lot of garbage out there, and some real good quality stuff out there for a reasonable price, you just need to look carefully.
A cheap knife is normally just that, a cheap knife.

As a sort of 'fighting' knife collector I have many knives to pick from. Al Marr was a team mate of my in the 17th & 12 SFA(A). So, when he was still alive I bought knives from him. He always added little things to my order, like engraving my wings, BOC and dive badge, etc. on them at no charge. So, I have (4) knives from him in my collection. They are mostly safe queens now. Two are folders.
I have two Randalls, one is the model 14 the other the model 1 w/stag handle and a compass in the butt cap. The #1 is my favorite as a fighting knife.
I have two Mark II Gerber knifes that I used in SWAT and one special Gerber presentation Mark !! with a wood handle that I was presented when I left the SWAT team. Also a Gerber San Francisco Shiv (by Blackie Collins) I used to wear it along with a Detonics Mark VI on my ankles when in LE Uniform. ;)
Recently I purchased a Special 1st SFG(A) knife from 1st in Asia. I like it better than my Special signed Yarborough knife, which I was lucky enough to win over on the PS forum.
I have a few other Misc. knives as well.
My every day carry knife is an Emerson Super CQC7 with Wave action. I really like this one and it deploys faster IMO than an automatic knife without the legal hassles.
Rudee -not!

Add me to the list of Emerson CQC-7 users. I just added a CQC-11 Blackhawk to the collection last week.
I have some nice Al Marrs that I picked up years ago. Several are still in the box and I don't think will ever be used...shame.
I am thinking of getting another Microtech. I already have a SOCOM Elite and really like it.
I am looking at the new Combat Troodon. Anybody have any experience with OTF autos? It would be an every day carry knife, seeing dirt and moisture. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Might as well throw in my low-speed, high drag thoughts.
Everyday wear: some type of "clip knife" Spyderco, Gerber, CRKT...3 inch blade or so. Concealable, good quality yet cheap enough if I lose the thing its not a big loss.
PSD: On my Paraclete RAV I keep a CRKT folder with a 4 inch blade.
Blowout bag: Always have a Leatherman in it.
Mil duty: Always a Swiss Army with the little saw & sissors. Always handy weather you are in hide site doing surveillance, working in the TOC or general duty day.
LBE/LBV: Have a Buck knife with a 5-6 inch blade.
Rucksack: For most enviorments I had a machete in my ruck. Didn't get much of a chance to use it in the desert :(
If I'm a carrying a belt-fed weapon I bring a Leatherman as well.

I have always considered myself sort of a knife lover. I carried a Benchmade auto while in the Navy. I currently switch between an Emerson CQC-7 while on duty and a Emerson P-Sark while running around town.
Yesterday I picked up a Zero-Tolerance 302. ZT knives are made by Strider Knives and Ken Onion. I'm not sure I will ever take this honey out. The story of how it came to me is cool and I wouldn't want to damage it.

I need a partially serrated blade for cutting lines. If you are working on or around the water, I really suggest having something partially serrated.

Generally speaking the point design on a tanto makes it less likely to break off when stabbing (as originally designed to puncture armor).
My $.02? Determine what you're going to use it for and buy a design that supports it. (See LRS post on page 3).

That is the reason I always carry a partially serrated blade.
No serrated blade made for a pretty hairy ride on a 32' Egg Harbor with twin screws once. We lost one of the props due to the drive shaft getting wrapped with a polypro line from a lobster pot. The boat's owner went into 50 degree water in his skivvies and tried to cut the line, but could not due to his having a knife with a straight edge. A serrated knife would have cut right through the line. We had to return into a harbor with a narrow opening and a tight fit through a railroad and then a highway drawbridge. Trying to do that with one screw and a hard outgoing moon tide was no freaking fun...
One of the best knives I own is a five dollar Dexter Russell serrated knife with their trademark white plastic handle and a plastic sheath. When I go saltwater fishing it is a great thing to have because it works so well and it's cheap so you don't care if it gets abused by the saltwater and the sand, etc.
Yes, I am a knife junkie...

For cutting lines out of wheels, we used to take 2 hack saw blades and put them in the saw opposite each other so you would cut in both directions. Works real well, even on poly lines.

Lost my Spyderco recently. I'm looking to replace it with either an Endura or a Delica. Anyone familiar with either blade?
Thanks.

Either are good, just different sizes.
I have an old partially serrated Endura that lives in my hunting kit, and a new fully serrated Delica in my car emergency kit.
EDC is still an Emerson Commander.
Lost my Spyderco recently. I'm looking to replace it with either an Endura or a Delica. Anyone familiar with either blade?
Thanks.
I've got a buddy that uses an endura and loves it. Also, both have the wave feature available, which I'm entirely addicted to.

You Marines have used a damn good knife for over 68 years, it's called a Ka-Bar. Actually it is a hell of a knife, try and find a issue Mark 2 Navy Dive tool with the fiberglass sheath. I have carried everything from Randall's models 1,14, and 16 to Jerry Fisk Bowie. I spent a lot of money on equipment and used it, no closet queens. IMHO the issue Mark 2 is almost as good a all around tool as it gets and it cost very little.
The Tracker is very heavy and actually limited in use to us, just MHO. I know it looked cool in "The Hunted" if you get a chance pick one up and just play with, try to get the feel of it. A good pair of pliers or multi-tool and a good fixed blade give you lots of options. Try not to get hung up on the cool factor, somethings hang around just because they work and Ka-Bars are one of those. Busse also makes some great knives. I love mine.
Good Luck finding a tool that works for you.

From a FOG,, that has had lot's on blades. Knives are tools and as such they are expendable, they get lost,, and stolen..
Try to have one on your person at al times, but also remember it's not there for Force Projection... Nor should you imply any relation to certain parts of your body and the length or size of the blade,, nuff said..
Here are a couple of my all time favorites. And I carry several. each has their own strong points.
Basic: Camillus pocket knife as issued, great little multi-tool when there were no multi tools.. I have my 1966 original and a 1969 back-up. No longer made, but you can find them on ebay cheap..
Pocket: CRKT T1 M13-01T, single blade pocket knife, good for dress and general cutting duties, very light wt...
Bill Harsey T2, plain blade, This is new to me. It replaces a couple medium pocket knives. I wanted a little larger blade for fishing & hunting duty.
Bill Harsey PS, # 066, You need a small fixed blade for general cutting duty, to wear on your kit, yet not to big that it blocks access to other gear and/or sticks out and snags stuff.. Bill makes a good product,, but you may find other brands more to your liking.
Multi-tool, I have a SOG B60, they are all pretty good,, your S4 may have a supply,, free-bee..
Big Blade,, I have carried a couple and I always find I don't like the weight and length. They don't pack well and sometimes never get used.. A long time ago, in SEA I carried a folding bolo,, WW II vintage,, packed better, but still heavy. The CISO Bolo and the 1917 Medical Bolo's are in the same frame. When you need one, look at these.. But remember they take up space and wt, I would rather have a couple extra mag's or a stick of C4.. Additionally as you will not be on point, let someone else carry the machete..
I have also carried Randall's and other hi-speed fighting knives. They are great,, but only do well at Gabriel Demo Area,, for show.. Lose a 500 USD knife and you will understand their limits...
Good Luck,, Stay Safe,, God Bless...

Good info and good photos, love the Bolos.
The only knives I ever lost were to the ex-wife but it was worth it. Thought of it as losing it in combat. LMAO!
Great points about weight and knives being tools. I would rather hit someone in the back of the head with a E-tool than try most of the Ninja nightfighter/Dark Ops knife fighter BS you see. You usually need a good multi-tool more than a fighing knife. Of course I am a FOB and the times may have changed.
For the weight of the Tracker knife I can carry a pistol. Of course I know you can't carry POWs. Talk to your NCOs and see what they carry and remember nothing worse than a new 2Lt. looking like Rambo with some BS knife. You are ahead of the curve just by asking the questions you are asking, you may take some sh-t butthe people here will help you.

I am researching utility blades, and the tracker came up, but you were correct when you said most reviews stated it was too heavy and did not excel at any one thing. I have a cheap coleman multi-tool and a Spyderco Endura w/ Wave feature for everyday use so I will stick to that for now.

If you guys have the time I would love to ask you some questions. I'm usually surprised at why people prefer the knives they do and curious as to what the members of socnet think? I hope your answers will help me make a better knife and be able to better understand why and how they should be made. Thank you for your time.
1. How do you prefer to carry your knife? Weak side, strong side, pack, on chest rig, horizontal on the belt, etc... but most importantly why?
2. Leather or kydex and why?
3. Carbon, stainless, or tool steel and why?
4. what type of finish? Hand rubbed, blued, black, packarized, well rusted, polished, etc..?
5. Full tang or hidden tang? This last one bother most knifemakers the most. Everyone will tell you that a kabar is one of the best knives you can get and it's a hidden tang, but everyone swears by the full tang why is that?
6. Is a solid strinking surface on the butt cap of the knife a good thing like a kabar? How often is it used?
7. Do you prefer a glass breaker tip or so called skull crusher over a flat striking surface?
8. What handle material holds up best and gives you the best grip?
9. Do you prefer a blade that is easy to sharpen but dulls more often? Or a blade that is a real bitch to sharpen but will stay sharp for a long time?
10. What type of sharpening system works best for you?
11. Do you prefer a thin blade say 1/8" or a thick blade say 1/4"? Do you prefer that thickness because of the way it feels or because your afraid it will break?
12. Lastly do you have a prefence for blade grind like flat, convex, saber, full hollow, hollow grind?
I'm sure just about everyone will have a different preference. I'm curious as to what happened that made you prefer that style if it was from expierence or something else.
Yup, got mine today as well. It was immediately ridiculed by the wife. My daughter liked it though. I think she gave it to one of her Barbies....
Yep. Got mine too. It is the perfect Copenhagen opener on the key chain. When I have to cut my "Coke Fingernail" down that is.

knifemaker -- my answers:
1. Situational dependent.
2. Spec Ops Brand Sheath -- kydex or plastic lined nylon sheath. I HATE sheaths where the part that protects the blade and the belt loop are the same piece of kydex as I have had the loop break off from the sheath. If I cannot get a knife to fit in a Spec Ops Brand sheath I choose a different knife. The ability for the blade portion of the sheath to be able to flex away from the belt loop is extremely important.
3. Carbon steel -- easiest to resharpen in the field.
4. Parkerized -- it wears better over time. I hate those painted on finishes that many of the knives have today as it flakes off quickly.
5. Full tang.
6. I have never used the butt of a knife to do anything.
7. I have never used the butt of a knife to do anything.
8. Micarta -- the rougher the better.
9. I prefer a blade that is easy to sharpen but dulls more often.
10. Double sided stone.
11. 3/16" is perfect all around.
12. Whatever is easiest to resharpen.

Thanks Stanley White. I'll look into the spec ops sheath. Most leather sheaths have the belt loop on the same piece of leather. I would have never thought about it being able to break off then ruining the whole sheath. Thanks again.

I cannot envision a leather sheath separating from it's belt loop.

I also carry a CRKT/Corkum first strike which I fancy.

My answers are from a long time ago, but I don't know that the answers would have changed.
1. How do you prefer to carry your knife? Weak side, strong side, pack, on chest rig, horizontal on the belt, etc... but most importantly why?
Strong side, hip, vertical. Why? Stays with me even when most of the rest of the gear is gone.
2. Leather or kydex and why?
Never tried kydex. Had issues with leather in the tropics. Nylon.
3. Carbon, stainless, or tool steel and why?
Carbon. Same reason already given.
4. what type of finish? Hand rubbed, blued, black, packarized, well rusted, polished, etc..?
Parkarized, hand-rubbed, blued... all ok. Not that concerned with having a dull blade as long as it doesn't shine. Polished is out.
5. Full tang or hidden tang? This last one bother most knifemakers the most. Everyone will tell you that a kabar is one of the best knives you can get and it's a hidden tang, but everyone swears by the full tang why is that?
Full tang because that is what the Randall Model 14 had. Have broken a kabar at the hilt... tang broke off.
6. Is a solid strinking surface on the butt cap of the knife a good thing like a kabar? How often is it used?
Have never used the butt of a knife for anything.
7. Do you prefer a glass breaker tip or so called skull crusher over a flat striking surface?
See above.
8. What handle material holds up best and gives you the best grip?
Micarta.
9. Do you prefer a blade that is easy to sharpen but dulls more often? Or a blade that is a real bitch to sharpen but will stay sharp for a long time?
A blade that is easy to sharpen... but not too soft. It needs to hold an edge fairly well. Randall Model 14 was exactly what I liked.
10. What type of sharpening system works best for you?
Stone and oil.
11. Do you prefer a thin blade say 1/8" or a thick blade say 1/4"? Do you prefer that thickness because of the way it feels or because your afraid it will break?
Thick blade... I've broken thin blades.
12. Lastly do you have a prefence for blade grind like flat, convex, saber, full hollow, hollow grind?
Don't really care. If I like the knife, I like the knife.

1 Depends on the knife. In a perfect world a decent field knife would be strong side on my belt. As stated hopefully it would stay with me in an emergency. Unfortunately I was one of those guy who was always short of space on my LCE and LBV and the knife got put wherever I had room, not necessarily where I wanted it. Now I tend to carry a small reverse edged fixed blade on my off side tucked behind my radio. It’s just for backup/weapon retention.
2 I like leather because it tends to form to the shape of the rest of my stuff and is more comfortable.
3 Don’t really care as long as it has a good heat treat.
4 dull
5 full tang
6 & 7 haven’t really needed to hits tuff, but a nice option. The knife I am having made now has this option, even though I have never needed it. It doesn’t hurt.
8 G10 or micarta, I doubt the average user could hurt either one.
9 I like a blade that stays sharp for a long time just because I hate trying to sharpen one.
10 I can use a stone and oil but it takes me forever, I wouldn’t mind trying something like an edge pro
11 I like the thicker blades. I did bend a 3/16 blade one time on a jump. I got it somewhat strait and still use the knife
12 Flat, just because that was the grind on the knife I used the most. Really don’t care as long as it’s not a hollow grind.

Just looking for clarification as to what exactly the 1st production run, 1 of 1000 on my benchmade folder is referring to. I purchased it in 2002 and at the shop where purchased the salespersons were making a big deal out of it.
I on the other hand just wanted the blade and to get on with my errands.
I did do some research on the markings and came away more confused than before. It appears that after any modification (upgrade) the blades were re-released in a new run of (usually) 1000 pieces.
Furthermore, from what I gather the mating of Bali-song was due to the use of their, (Bali-song's) locking mech. on the Benchmade frame and blade assemblies.
To me its just a really nice knife, although there are some carry position/location safety concerns inherent in many quality blades.
Some personnel have qestioned it and upon seeing the Bali-song logo replied "that's no Benchmade" Well, Yes it is ! FWIW .
Any input on these production/ manufacturing practices would be greatly appreciated. Just curious .
Thanx in advance.10772
