The rifle is a .308... with a 9" barrel and a collapsible stock. A crowd pleaser at night time for sure.

I started this idea in the back of my head years ago.

I can't tell you why I wanted one of these... I just did. Ever since I saw a G3K and Vollmer HK51 conversion "back in the day" I thought the idea was cool as hell.

I had a PTR91K rifle that I was going to turn into an SBR. My research showed that would be a huge pain in the ass changing out the cocking tube.

Then Vector Arms started making the V51 pistol and V51 Rifles. They make HK clones using PTR Recievers - Vector Arms: http://www.vectorarms.com/guns/HK_308.htm

So I ordered a V51 pistol through a friendly neighborhood FFL, test fired it and promptly submitted the ATF paperwork to register it as a Short Barreled Rifle.

Once that was approved, I have to get the stock modified by vector arms.

It is a G3/HK91 reciever with an MP5 length cocking tube so it needs a modified buffer. The regualr G3 length buffer is too long.

Anyway... Here it is. Purdy, aint she? I think I might try to re-finish the end cap on the stock. That is a surplus G3 stock.

Well, if you insist... :D

Seriously, I've started looking into getting a 7.62 can. I just got a 5.56 can though... that might have to wait until next year.

Daddy has to have one.

I was looking at the SOCOM IIs, but this might be the ticket.

How much to build it...and what is the ATF tax on something like that? Is the giggle switch for real or show?

I shot it today. 100% reliable in rifle configuration. Actually... not as bad of a blast as you'd think. By buddy was shooting his 10.5" LMT next to me and he was more annoying than I was. ;) The recoil isn't bad - straight back. Even with the collapsible stock, it wasn't jumping up and whacking me in the face and giving me 'cheek tingle'. I think my buddy got some video.

The accuracy leaves a little bit to be desired... well, it is a 7.62 HK with a 9" barrel and HK rifle sights. I guess I shouldn't expect it to perform like my Remington 700. :D

I need to figure out what kind of optic to put on the bitch.

Do you know what the velocity will be out of a 9" bbl?

Not sure, I hear anywhere from 200-400 FPS drop in velocity. I hope to get it out to the range with a buddy's chrono on Saturday. If I get that going, I'll post the results.

I don't dig the SOCOM II - the M1A Scout is 'mo betta in my opinion.

Total was still less than $1500.

- I got the V51 pistol for wholesale through an FFL I know. But Atlantic firearms has them for $989.00 http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/programming/expand.asp?Prodid=241
- ATF Tax Stamp on a form 1 was $200 (plus cost of passport photos, fingerprint cards)
- I got the surplus collapible stock from Centerfire Systems for $139 (back when they had them) http://www.centerfiresystems.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=535
- Vector Arms did the modification to the stock for $75.

edit to add: That is a B&T railed forend I have on there. I already had it from an MP5 clone I made. If you want it JUST like the pictures they are $235.00.

All that and about 8 months of my life waiting. :)

I think Vector also sells the stocks pre-converted for about $250. The $139.00 one is 'used', nicer ones cost more but I bought 2 of them when I was thinking about doing the conversion from an HK 91 by myself.

In retrospect, it may have been better to get a vector one.

From the bench with my buddy's aimpoint thrown on there. You get a better idea of the muzzle flash. It has the cantilever mount; check out how much higher my head is... Not sure I dig that. If I put an optic on there it will be a low mount. I'll wait to see what it is like with a solid stock.

In retrospect, it may have been better to get a vector one.Gack, are you stating that you thought the better way to have gone was to simply get the gun you have from Vector? Or the stock?

I looked at the webpage you put up for Vector and did not see a collapsible stock offered....

GackMan
10 May 2007, 02:18
You have to call vector for the stock. They offer the stock 'pre-modified' as well as the option to modify one you already own. They don't seem to be HSLD when it comes to the E-biz.

I was only talking about the stock - If I knew then what I know now (that I was going to do this project based on a pistol) I would have bought a stock from vector so it was already modified rather than buy one from a 3rd party and send it in to be modified. Don't get me wrong, mine works, it is just not as pretty and the saving of $20... just not worth it.

If I were buying this for work (kind of a niche item ;) ), I would buy the unit as a whole rifle from the manufacturer.

I had an HK91, bought the stock(s), then figured out changing the cocking tube, buffer, and shortening the barrel would be a pain in the ass my entry level gun smith ass couldn't deal with, I got the pistol, converted that instead... LOL You get the idea.

For me, it was easier to buy the pistol from an FFL and do the form 1. Depending on you patience level and local laws, just ordering a rifle on a form 4 might be easier.

Interesting idea.

Could make a good close-in bear killer for those solo long walks in the woods.

What does it weigh? How is the balance?

I am curious whether a can will really do much on it.

First time I ever saw a 7.62 "pistol."

My guys in Thailand are all RT SWAT Police, and I was thinking of V-51s or real HK-51s for the vehicle escort role. The guys are already using MP-5s and HK-33s as their issue long arms, so there would be no "learning curve". The End User Certificate is probably going to be a PITA unless the US .gov starts working with the Thai .gov again...

I wonder if anyone makes an integrally suppressed "SD" version? You'd still get the supersonic "crack", but the flash and gas would be taken out of the equation a mite...

An EUC is no problem for deliveries to the Royal Thai Army or Police. If you need assistance with this, say the word.

BTW....Cobra Gold is underway now. With US, Singapore, and other forces participating. There is no need for H&K weapons to go to Thai end users via US sources. They can come out of virtually any country in Asia, or from Germany.

Weight is 9.8 lbs unloaded + a 20 round mag is about a pound.

It is a little front heavy with the tele stock on there, but not bad. The stock is steel so I think it offsets it a little.

Sweet blaster!!!

I think you will like shooting it with the fixed stock. I have both a fixed and collapsable stock for my PTR-91. I definitly prefer the fixed stock, seems like I get a better cheek weld and sight picture.

That is me resetting the trigger... follow through and all that fundimental mumbo jumbo ;)

It is certainly not a 'match' trigger.

Thanks... I believe the 33s the guys use are refurbished in Thailand under license, but I haven't seen any 7.62mm weapons around to make into 51s. I'm sure they can get what they need for official business, but the work I'd be doing with them is on a per-diem basis under a Thai private company. IF it works out, that is. I will advise upon getting back in-country in July.

I will say that the guys impress the livin' hell out of me.

BTW: I received a Cobra Gold 2007 coin while I was in Bangkok a couple of weeks ago, drinking with some Marines and other, rather interesting, people.;)

Using 1986 surplus South African ball ammo it was +/- 2000 FPS.

It was just a quick set up and shoot with a freind's chrono so I didn't have time to sit down with a bunch of loads.
