Hey All,

Just wondering if anyone knows about the Arabic dialect DLPTs. Specifically, do they only test for listening skills (as opposed to reading) and do you have to have taken the MSA DLPT to take one of the dialect tests? I am just wondering because the dialects are not normally written. Any info would be appreciated.

They didn't administer the DLPT for dialect when I was there, but I believe they are coming up with something.

And it would probably only be for listening/speaking.

I did one over the phone a few weeks ago. They basically talk to you in the target language and you respond appropriately to what they said. I'll just say I was below a 2. :)

Brothers of Language,

It helps to be cognizant of the dialects, both the one spoken and the one you learned to speak. If you speak with an Egyptian intonation everybody recognizes it for exactly that. Or Jordanian. Et cetera.
Can you hear a Georgia accent? A New York accent? (Which borough?) A Philly? An upper Ohio? A Chicago? (And specifically which part of Chicago?) A Texas? Which side of the Minnesota-Wisconsin line can you decipher?
Your tongue is the teller of the tale. Quite often it may be better to recieve than give away...
