Hi,
in a situation where an operative see's a target and eliminates a target at close range are they required to meet with a physcologist to talk about the consequences of taking a life and how it might affect them not only now but later on...? or is it assumed that because they have volunteered for this unit and gone through all this that doing their job wont shake them up?
Im curious because SOP in some Police departments is to give an officer involved in a shootout resulting in a death or very serious wound to either side a 5 day paid vacation where they talk with a shrink (say shrink because spelling is bad on physcologist).

I'd imagine we would only be required to see the psych if we missed our target.

Yeah but for a new SEAL that must affect them... I would think.

With all respect for Trident:
In every SF unit it is the same: before and after each mission (usually even during training missions) you talk to the psychologist, each and every one of the team.

With a shooting incident you will definitely be debriefed with a shrink present till everything has been discussed over and over again.
This is done for several reasons:
-to see if the shooting was justified
-to learn from it
-to see how it affected the man/team
-on a positive side, it also shows who can make the shot.
So yes SEALs like any other SF unit talk to shrinks on a regular basis. It comes with the territory.

The usual disclaimer: No I’m not a SEAL, I’m Dutch and trained/worked with most NATO combat-swimmer units and basicly we all use the same procedures regarding the above.

Gee I woulda thought that if a SEAL had to fire his weapon then it must be justified..I mean they don't exactly go by the same rules as the Police do. Internal affairs doesn't knock down their door everytime they fire a round in a combat zone if they did then that'd be 1 helluva lotta talking..as for affecting man or team...it probably kept them alive..but ya never know...your hitting sensitive ground many people feel differently about killing other people but if your in a SpecOps unit long enough you WILL be called upon to do it...it comes with the territory...

OK, is this in a CQB kinda situation or more of an at war in the field situation? Or does this not matter?

I posted thinking of a CQB situation. I know in paintball (sorry thats as far as my experience goes so far) its a helluva lot more exilerating to see a target when your 5m away from him and hit him rather than spraying all over in a forest flattening everything in sight.

I would think deadly force and rules of ingagement would not be different in any case. I would think wether CQB or field battle deadly force and rules of engagement would apply to everybody be it SEAL, MP, FR, or Infantry.

my topic was more on the trauma and after action process for an operator rather than the ROEs and what not

but they wouldnt be the same necessarily...
FR's primary mission is reconaissance,
can FR provide reconaissance for the Marine unit its attached to when it starts up a firefight with everyone in sight and calls for extraction?
no they must observe...

while in a CQB situation a SEAL unit walking down a street might have different ROE from when they are at their main target ready to assault the building (might be hold fire on street, could be civilians, rather than feel free to fire in the target building where they might all be hostiles)

Any operatives feel free to chime in...
im not too sure of what I said!

Personally I think teh ROE are a bunch of BS...if your being threatened you fight back. i do't care if they don't shoot you if I ahve a weapon aimed at me and I have my own eapon available its out and I'm dropping that dumb SOB who didn't get off his shots before I did...screw all this hippie shit "don't fire till fired upon" if the enemy is good then you won't be able to fire back...so its important you anticipate thats why people run through those drills all teh time..if you aren't prepared to react when the situation arrises then your gonna wind up on teh wrong side of a bullet..as for walking down teh street..I'm pretty sure if a SEAL team is walking down teh street in CQB gear there won't be anyone to see them around and if they do then they will be scared shit less...But like I argued with 1 person about you might have to kill someone because you can't leave them behind..a favorite is the girl in the feild picking flowers..well how about if your on a GOPLAT and you get a enemy sentry and you only have a 4 man element and you need to continue along ya can't just leave them there..or just tie them up..ya gotta remove them from teh situation because if ya don't it might come back and bite ya in teh ass..(Look at saving pvt Ryan that German they let go wound up killing a few of em)..Ya might not like it but ya gotta do it..your life and the lives of others may depend on that single 9mm bullet coming outa your MP5 to keep them alive...So its mainly kill or be killed and as many of us have heard "Only the Strong Survive"

My god... THN--Give me a break. Sometimes this forum beats the Comedy channel! What are you guys doing over there? What is the shrink to operator ratio? I'm only required to talk to the waitress after an op.
