hi baboon;

Another South African, eh? guess that makes three of us here, including G who defected to OZ, that I know of. If you read S.A. Polisie Gedenkalbum 1913-1988 check pages 229,230-253-454,455 you'll find some of my relatives.

Had two cousins in the Recce's and one in 44Para during the Border War, the others served in SWA in SWAP and with Koevoet.

I'll have to look for the Silent War, thanks for the heads up. take care...Jim

Hey JY how long have you been in the States man? I thought you were a Yank! I checked out The Silent War at the bookshop the other day, pretty good stuff , especially on SA's role in Rhodesia( guys from 1 Recce formed D Sqn 1SAS) and the subsequent move of SAS and Selous Scouts operators to the Recces. This was not a success and most of these guys left after about a year. Very well illustrated, as is Pamwe Chete, which besides that also has a full list of those awarded Selous Scouts wings, about 650 in all, and citations for all decorations awarded to members of this regiment. This will put paid to those " when-wes" who all reckon they were in the Scouts. Cheers, boet, more later.

hi baboon;

Was born in US, my parents and grandparents came to the states as a permanent move in 1945. I grew up here and have been back to SA quite often over the years. Mainly to hunt and visit family, like Chui for sport! The family roots go back to the 1600's in SA, grandfather was in the ZARP during the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902, then went to the South African Constabulary afterwards.

Have three large frames with the family cap, shoulder titles and badges from late 1700's to the Border War, have one from the Transvaal 8th Inf. Scottish, can't figure that one out we're Boers!

So guess I'm a semi-yank 8)Born a month after they arrived in US. Catch you latter baboon, take care...Jim
