I can go on terminal leave May 08. I will retire a SCPO/E8 with 20 years active duty. Last 11 years supporting Naval Special Warfare, last three supporting ASO/AFO. Haiti, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq deployments. TS/SCI w/CI Polygraph all updated within past 12 months. Ideally I would like to go overseas for one year or work as part of a small team deploying for 90 day pumps. I also do not desire to relocate from Hampton Roads, Virginia at this time. I'm new to the civilian employment scene so please let me know if this is way too early for me to even be looking.

Thanks,
Keith

Deploying is great but have you thought of a Fed Civ job? Pay is good and the intro grades for intel are not bad. It worked for me and you could eventually get overseas. Been in SA for 7 yrs retired and still very active.

I am soon to retire myself and have a similar background probably a little less experience in someways who knows but I was recently turned on to a couple of web sites 1 is keyword intelligence careers and the other is clearance jobs, maybe that will help

SF BHT sounds like he has a pretty good idea of how all that works and I may be contacting him myself in 2 years haha

Until a supermarket manager makes the cutoff for a GG job and the Intel Contractors working in the duty position don't... Thank you Army CPOL.

I've heard that you should only sign up for those if you want a ton of spam and want to lose control over who sees your resume and when.

That said, Tracy raises a very important point. The only solution, network, network, network. Even if a terrible HR and manager conspire against you, networking should mitigate some of the stupidity.

Get in touch with MPRI. Get on their website and complete their IIF or IFF whatever it is called, and then email them. I believe they are your best bet. PM me for more contacts.

Good luck and thanks for your service.

I would start by sending a resume to all the major security companies as well (Blackwater, SOC-SMG, ArmorGroup, Triple Canopy, etc...) They usually hire a few Intel guys as well.

Intel in DEA is hurting. We are hiring people now from what HQ has said. Look a DoD Intel guy is getting a job with us and is starting out GS12-13 position, +15% Danger pay + 20% COLA + normal pay. Hay this is 35% added to your base pay:D
He will also get a Free House, Utilities and all expenses paid for his Kids in Private school.

Hell I do not even spend 1/2 my retirement check and I drink a lot. You have Job Security. The Intel work is not that hard especially for Retired Military it is a cake walk. The only problem you have to listen to a bunch of people wine about how bad they have it. Shoot the worst day here is still better than the best day in a good shit hole.

Timing is the key. I am on the Opns side and get an additional 25%:p But Intel has it good.
Look up http://www.fedjobs.com/ do your searches and you can find jobs.

I see openings on our closed system a lot also. We still have a position open here and it is hard to get Intel types from the states to apply or they come and get home sick and go back. Big Culture shock (Military vs DOJ types)

Good luck.

Two things going against you regarding a government job:

1. Your age.
2. Your experience.

Civilian analysts, as an institution, f*cking hate retired military intel analysts. We just lost two retired USN CPOs because of it. You guys are the heat, very goal and mission oriented and will do whatever it takes to get the job done. To us, it's about the intel and the quality of the analysis. There are others in the community that don't see things that way; and they're in charge.

If you want to make it worse for yourself, sign up as a contractor and do your job; THEN apply for a GG position. Did I mention the 6-8 week wait to find out if you're even a candidate?

If I sound bitter it's because I am. I train GG personnel to do my job and I can't lateral into the GG position because of my age (50), experience (post-graduate CompSci, GIS, supervisory GEOINT, and retired SF) and the fact I'm a stinking f*cking money-grubbing contractor (13 years). Just had another run-in today.

Personally I wouldn't waste my breath applying. Your plan about doing 90-day pumps is doable and a lot less stressful; even in a combat zone.

You have some good points, but if you do down the road get in the GG job you can make them crazy every day. Thats the part I love. I Understand your feelings and constantly see the "Just another Contractor" attitude. I make them crazy by hanging out with the contractors. That makes people crazy and I love that.

The DC Intel types are different than the ones in the field or in DOJ. As always the farther from the flag pole the better it gets. The DC, VA or MD area is the worst.

Age is a factor but not for entring the work force. The problem with age is that your SR Intel boss is going to be a lot younger than you (30's) and a lot less knowledgeable. They will also have a whole lot less field experience (Usually None).

I have found that the Intel people in Federal Law Enforcement are a lot more open to the Retired Military types than the (Main Stream Intel Community).

I still say do not throw out the option for a Government Job. Yes the wait is long but that is the system for the whole federal government. If you look in another direction you may succeed. Timing is the most important factor.

Hell, you do not teach at NGA?

Check out NEK Advanced Securities Group. They're looking for numerous Intel people. I work for them, they pay well, excellent benefits, cool company.

Tracy...

Hell, you do not teach at NGA?...

There are many ways to respond, but the most appropriate is that I'm writing the book and TTPs for my tradecraft discipline. NGA doesn't have a program yet. The one mollifying aspect is 'they' are listening to me so far to get it set up. They tried to stand up a cell to duplicate me and blew it; badly.

Just blew their socks off today on some programs I designed; which will be outdated in six months... :)

Understand. Keep giving them hell. I thought real hard about coming back to the states but did not want to get into the situation you are in. I fell into a position where I was putting my retirement papers in from. I am working hard and I am my own boss for all of SA and that suits me fine. I need 3 more people here but as usual HQ will not pay the price with new billets. Been fighting that battle for 4+ years. Send it back up every 6 months and one day they will get tired and open some positions. I am planning if they do so to hire only retired SOF folks. (Language/skills/job focus/no baby sitting needed)

NGA was a shot in the dark. Know some people there and they are having the same problems. But as you know this type of problem is through out the Gov.

Keep an eye out for the DOJ agencies, you might see a spot. You will be under used but the perks are great. :p
