I'm looking at applying to some "threat assessment" or "protective services" type firms in the Southern California area (i.e., Los Angeles). I was hoping to maybe learn of some firms I'm unaware of and to find out any opinions or experiences any of you have had with them. Any opinions on which are better to work for? Galahad Inc. seems to be a prominent one along with Gavin de Becker and Associates. But there's also Talon Executive Services Inc. and Omega Threat Management Group. I've heard good things about Thomas Dale and Associates. I'm gonna put an App in to them. But I wanted to make sure there aren't any others as well.

Any information would be great. Thanks everybody. And please tell if there are any good ones I haven't mentioned.

Thomas Dale and Associates is good...I do work for them part time when I need extra money. There are alot of companies here in So Cal. TDA is among the best, IMHO.

I'd stay away from Galahad and Gavin. All associates of mine agree on this. Unless you enjoy wearing body armor for every job, regardless of threat, having a camera in every command post, or the caliber and brand of carry weapon dictated to you.

Oh, and stay away from GSIS.

You could always write me an email filling me in on the insanity. But noooooooooooo........ You've got to send one-liners with no info. :p

Gavin is a good transition job once you get out, because it’s a slow pace work environment with a steady income. Work 12 hours a day, four days a week, but overtime is always there. Basically they operate a lot of residential command centers and few commercial sites, monitoring CCTV’s and doing rounds. Also, because of the new law changes this year, most sites require long-sleeve shirts with security patches on them. Pretty much the overly compensated security guard, but work is better than no work!

Good luck in your search buddy.

Thx for the info. Do you know any jobs for Threat Assessment? Say for someone with a behavioral science background. I suppose de Becker and his higher up people do the analysis. Whereas, the PSD guys just bodyguard more or less.

If you have experience, you should submit a resume for the Threat Assessment positions, they also have slots for PI's as well. To answer your question, PSD and Threat Assessment are completely different. I only know of one PSD guy who lateral because of his degree. The pay might be better on the PSD side, like I said there are always overtime and details going on, TA guys are on salary. The benefits are ok, full health and dental after four months, but only four days a year for vacation for the first two years. The pay scale is on thier web site under employment.
