This is a great, great book. The author is Anton Myrer, and the book is only available through the Army War College Press, but it is worth tracking down. Everyone connected with the military should read it, I think. It changed the way I look at myself as a soldier, to be sure. The ISBN is 1-889927-01-5.

What is the book about?

It's about a guy who enlists in WWI, rises up the ranks and becomes a General in WWII, and finally goes to Nam in the early days and warns everyone that it's something we shouldn't be involved in. It features some of the most realistic combat descriptions I've ever read. It's very long though, about 800 pages. Good for a long deployment somewhere.
