I just finished reading 'Over the Abyss' by Col I. G. Starinov, (Ivy Books,1995). Starinov was involved in Russian spec ops, demolition, and Partisan activies in WWI, Russian Civil War, fighting as a advisor to Spain in the late '30s, WWII, and beyond. It provides a interesting look at the training, doctrine and politics involved in the Soviet Army and their spec ops force during most of this century. The havoc wrought on the leadership of the Soviet Army by Stalin's purges is telling. Highly recommended.
