Went and caught the nickelback show. They rocked the house and were much better then I thought they would be. So in that light it prompted me to start a thread of best concerts.

The best show I have ever seen has to be the Band LIVE they rocked the house.

Several good shows come to mind:

Iron Butterfly in a bar in Knoxville in 73

Nugent, Nazareth, and Black Sabbath in 73

Black Oak Arkansas and Lynard Skynard in 74

Emerson Lake & Palmer in 77

George Thorogood and the Destroyers free concert in the King Dome in 80 or 81

(EDIT TO ADD) Robin Trower twice, both times in bars, in 75 and again in 86

and the last goood one was

Guns n Roses and Metallica in 92

I've been to many, many shows, but these are the ones that were the most impressive, be it in technical brilliance, loudness, rocking the house down, or whatever.

The absolute best concert - is one that I am not attending.

I have absolutely no desire to ever attend another concert. I rank that right up there with Disney.

Buy the fucking CD, it is cheaper and you can listen to it all you want.

But you got to see them in person... bullshit. I am not star struck and no, it is not better in person.

Guess this gives away my age!! Seen Lynyrd Skynyrd in '76 if memory serves me correctly at Arrowhead Stadium, at the tender young age of 16.

George Thorogood put on one helluva show at CU, Boulder Stadium in 1980. Loved it! Oh yeah, he definately rocked the house!

Also, Jimmy Buffett was a fun concert to attend.

Eagles...always good music.

Red Hot Chili Peppers in Seattle just a few years ago....man, Flea is wild!!

John Prine at a local community college, 1980.

David Bromberg, Corky Siegel and Art Hodes at the Park West in Chicago, 1983.

John Mayall at Club Monterey, 1988.

Most of the big venue, big name acts I've seen over the years have been pretty forgettable, with few exceptions.

Edit: How could I forget, I also saw Taj Mahal playing solo at Club Monterey, 1989. Probably one of the best musicians I've ever seen, the guy could do it all. I had to leave after 4 hours, the hour was late and I was about 3 hours away from a PT formation.

Ozzfest 2005 at the Nissan Pavillion in Virginia. After 20 or so warmup bands, we saw

Rob Zombie
In Flames
Shadows Fall
Mudvayne
Black Label Society
Iron Maiden
Black Sabbath

What made it memorable was that I was there with my 15 year old son. We were in "the pit", right up against the stage. Zombie, Maiden and Sabbath were the best. It was also the last tour of the original Black Sabbath.

Hatebreed.

Most memorable moment: Hardcore girl whipping the chains attached to her pants around and hitting people. I shoved her from behind to try and get her away. She turned around and punched the guy standing next to me in the face. The resulting skirmish between her and basically everyone standing around me was interesting to say the least.

Chicago twice..... Rush in 85.....Def Leppard twice ( with and without Steve Clark)......Kiss three times ( with makup, without, and with again) Bryan Adams.... Foreigner.....Reo Speedwagon. All great concerts.

Best band I've ever seen, and the worst were on the same bill. Saw Heart at the LSU assembly center. They were awsome, and we got to meet the guys in the band afterwards. Opening for them was Autograph. PATHETIC. They only had one hit, and they screwed that one up. hahahah!

I saw Trower opening for Foreigner and gotta agree.... great show.

BTW, my wife and her family were at the hospital the day they brought the members of Lynard Skynard in after the plane crash. Her brother snuck into the ER to get to see em.

Others were good.....

Depeche Mode (1986 and 2000 - -the show in the 90's stunk)

Echo & The Bunnymen w/The Church
The Fixx (all three times, but maybe that's because I was backstage)
Dire Straits
Waylon Jennings
Clint Black & Tanya Tucker
White Snake
Billy Idol (2x's)
U2 on the Joshua Tree tour
Missing Persons
Flock of Seagulls
Berlin
Lenny Kravitz & Pink
David Sanborne
Cheap Trick
Beach Boys
Craig Chaquico, Peter White, Richard Elliott

I know I'm forgetting one or two..

Yup...I'm a child of the 80's.

What's wrong with you people? Does no one else revere Lemmy?

Motorhead - spring 2005. AWESOME! Had hearing problems for three days

2nd place:

George Thorogood - 1993 - Would have been charged with AWOL had we been caught. We drove three hours to the show (being more than 50km away without a pass - big no-no up here), partied with a few people after, then drove back arriving EXACTLY on time for morning PT. We slid out of the car, resplendent in our jeans and "Get a haircut and get a real job" T-Shirts, and right into the back rank just as everyone else was forming up. Thankfully, we bought a shirt (or pin, I forget) for our sergeant so no awkward questions were asked.

Also ERIC CLAPTON this spring, with Robert Cray as the opener. $$$$ to get in, but would do it again in a heartbeat.

Saw Long John Baldry the night I graduated basic (1990). I still have the ticket I was able to get him to sign.

Audioslave - 2005 - Great musicians and Chris Cornell is the best living rock vocalist today. I hope he stops through again with his new band.

ZZ Top (82) - my first live show ever. This was the first time they were allowed back in Austin after they threw a "BBQ" in Texas stadium in 74-ish and the stadium got tore up. Amazing show.

The Who (82 & 89) - Talk about a stark conrast in atmosphere. Saw The Who at the Cotton Bowl the first time. Total party atmosphere, the parking lot was just as fun as the show and The Who were amazing. I don't even remember getting home other than 4 of us were crammed in a VW bug, it was in the 20's and the passenger side window was busted down. Best road trip evar. Flash forward to 89 at the Astrodome. Revenge of the 30-somethings. Everyone had short hair, were wearing polo shirts and khakis and they brought their kids. At least The Who still rocked.

Ozzy (83) - Speak of the Devil tour. Small auditorium in Austin. Everyone was standing on the arms of their seats for the entire show. Ozzy at his best.

British Are Coming Tour (83) - All star benefit tour with great match-ups. Jeff Beck played with Jan Hammer...Beck played the most technically perfect set I have ever heard, Eric Clapton and Joe Cocker played a set together, Jimmy Page and Paul Rogers played a set before they became The Firm.

Genesis (84) - they played 90% old school Genesis (Peter gabriel era); best light show I have ever seen.

Deep Purple (85) - San Antonio...craziest show I have ever seen. People were throwing fireworks and shooting off bottle rockets for the entire show. It was mayhem. It wasn't even near a holiday :) Deep Purple rocked, though.

Motley Crue (90) - Best energy ever. I'm not even a big Crue fan, but the synergy between the band and the crowd was awesome. I was definitely a Crue fan that night.

Edgar Winter (94) - Frankenstein was the best live song I have seen played by anyone, anywhere.

Stevie Ray Vaughan - I was fortunate to see him play bars in Austin before he was ever known outside Texas.

U2, Slane Castle, Ireland - 2001-08-25 & 09-01.

80+ thousand the first weekend concert, 89-90k the following weekend for the encore concert.

Ireland beat Holland 3-nill for the WC slot the day of the second concert, the crowd was incredibly hyped and energetic, the atmosphere was electric.

I've been fortunate, and seen some great shows, but looking out from the side-stage area back out onto that massive crowd...at night with the flood lights on them as 80-90k jumped arms raised to the beat of the music and singing every word...I've never seen anything like it, not before or since.

Everyone in Ireland (who wasn't Dutch) got laid that night.

I'm not terribly into concerts anymore except for a few.
I'd LOVE to see ZZ Top. They are one of my favorite bands that I've never seen.

And my favorite band, which happens to be local to Atlanta: Colossick

They also happen to be friends, so I'm biased. But they damn sure put on one helluva show. They can play, they don't stare at their shoes and snivel.

At the bar/club where I used to work and now just hang out (Black Cat, DC) I see probably 100 or more shows a year (smaller venue: 900 people tops?) so I can't narrow down a "favorite." Pretty much any show where a band will put on a great one despite the size of the audience is great in my opinion.

Never been a fan of huge stadium shows. I prefer it more intimate.

Saw TV on the Radio on the back stage of the Cat when there were probably 250 people crowded into a room that holds 150 comfortably. That was right before they blew up and it was amazing.

Same with the Dresden Dolls (who now tour with NIN). Small show the first time they came through - utterly surreal. Then they moved to the mainstage of the Cat (again 900 people) and still just as good. Now they play huge venues which aren't my style.

Gogol Bordello. Ukranian Gypsy Punk from NYC. If you ever get a chance to see them, go. Best live show I've ever seen.

Caught Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in 2004 (?) the year we had a hurricane and DC flooded. Most people must have assumed the show would be cancelled (at the 9:30 club) due to power outages but it came on in time for them to play. In a venue holding 2000 people they played to a crowd of about 75 and put on the same show they have when at a full house. Big ups for that.

Einstürzende Neubauten was a show I wouldn't have wanted to miss.

Hank III puts on a hell of a show.

But now I want to know what band B5R was in and if I've ever seen him....

Best shows.

Metallica in 92, San Diego. (the speaker set the cloth metalica curtain on fire, this is the first concert after the other fire inccident, GnR took 4 hours to finnaly come around to play after Metalica, thy sucked and pretty much everyone left after the first song).

Def Lepord and Cheap Trick in 06, Albuquerque. A friend of my wife is a guitar tech and was working for Cheap Trick so we got in free. Wife was pregant at the time. Cheap Trick still rocks.

Crash Worship in 98, San Diego, You probably never heard of them. It's too bad, it was far more than a concert, it's an experience and very interactive.

Rev Horton Heat, any of their shows.

Tenderloin in 94, San Diego. Drummer was the same for Rev Horton Heat, not around anymore.

Rocket from the Crypt, Halloween 94, San Diego.

Dead Bolt, if they are playing near you, go see them. It's not so much the music "Sarciest band in the world", it's the whole show. Hurl insults if you go, it's part of the act.

Creedle, now defunct, my favorite band ever.

Mellisa Etheridge, yeh yeh I know. Scariest audience ever, but she really puts on an excellent show. She is a very genuine person and very good to her crew. Friend of mine works sound, we get in for free.

Agnostic Front, GBH in 86, Fenders Ballroom, Long Beach. Legnedary show.

Blood for Blood, Boston. They really put on a good show, balls out.

Too many other to list. All I can really ad to this is a big budget does not equate to a good show. It only helps if the band is already a good act.

Been to many concerts but the best because of the surprise factor was at the Enlisted Man's Club in Orlando in 1980. They had a band on that night called JR Jet. Half way through the second set Pat Travers jumps up on stage and grabs a guitar and finishes the set. Turns out his little brother was one of the guitarists in JR Jet. Finished with Snortin' Whiskey.

I've remembered a few more...

Beastie Boys at Lollapalooza, St. Paul '94 (Ill Communication). I've never seen an audience (and band) so into a show. They had the whole crowd jumping in unison (30-40K or so). Played Paul Revere, but let the crowd sing the entire song. I heard they later said it was the best set they'd ever played.

Saw Rev. Horton Heat when they opened for White Zombie. The jackass idiots who were there just to see WZ play Thunderkiss '65 (which they probably only knew from Beavis & Butthead) actually booed RHH. They played a great set, though.

I've also been to a number of concerts which were disappointing.

Pantera got a late start and had to cut their set short. Dime was so stoned by the encore that he couldn't play worth a damn. At least I got to see one of the best and most influential metal guitarists ever for a little while.

Same experience as Matchanu with Metallica/GnR. They were plenty hammered by the time they hit the stage four hours after Metallica.

Lollapalooza 94 - Smashing Pumpkins. Billy Korgan screeched into the mic while flailing away at his guitar and snapping most of its strings.

Matchanu is so right about Cheap Trick. First outdoor concert for me, the Ohio State Fair. They rocked !!!! Got 2 picks from Ricky. Seen them twice since. Last time Bunny Carlos, drummer, was out recovering from a heart attack or open heart. His kid was sitting in playing for him. Didnt miss a beat.

Aerosmith/GNR opened and SUCKED. 88?
Iron Maiden in Indianapolis 83? First concert ever
Van Hagar at Legend Valley-outdoor venue

On a lighter note: SLIA-St Louis Irish Arts school. This is a group of kids keeping traditional Irish music and dance alive in the US. These kids are so damn good with there music and dance they were invited to Ireland for the All Ireland Comp for traditional music and dance. They BEAT everyone. They have a badhran player that was INCREDIBLE. The really neat thing is these kids really seamed to enjoy themselves. If you get a chance, and enjoy traditional Irish music SEE them.

HA! I saw AF and GBH at the (old) Satyricon in Portland - must have been the same tour. Vinnie Stigma was a complete badass.

I'm going to what I think is my twenty-fifth RHH show on Saturday. The best shows I've seen are always some hard-working and relatively unknown act or local band in a small club, never some giant commercial production in a sports arena. Support local music!

As best concerts go......

I did get to see the Black Crows play in the Bayou Blues Café on River Street in Savannah back in 94 (I think).
It was Super Bowl Sunday, me and a couple of RB’s were down on River Street getting F’ed up and watching the game. Well, Jay (my roommate) and I went out to piss in the river and as we head back to the bar, there are the Black Crows walking down River Street. So I walk up to them (I just pushed right by their security) and started talking to the lead singer. They were in Savannah for a show the next night and after a few words, the lead singer says “Hey, we’re going to this blues bar, you two should come and hang out” So we did. Now I’m not a Black Crows fan but we hung out with them, got more F’d up and they took the stage for a few sets. I don’t think they played any of their stuff (which is a good thing), they just stuck to good old classic blues. It was a pretty cool night and a good show.

(for all you smooth jazz fans...if there are any???)
I work for a small company that produces contemporary jazz concerts. I've had a ball over the past few years seeing a lot of great musicians up close and personal. The best part about the shows is that the band members stay after their performance and autograph their CD's etc. I've met a lot of tremendous musicians who are really down to earth people as well...A completely different scene than the top arena acts...
This past spring we produced Chris Botti; and did a benefit concert featuring Marion Meadows, Chieli Minucci, Jeff Kashiwa, Nelson Rangell, Eric Darius, and Ken Navarro.

I've also helped with:
Joe Sample
Kim Waters
Accoustic Alchemy
Richard Elliot
Chieli Minucci and Special EFX with Ken Navarro
The Rippingtons
Brian Culbertson
Chuck Loeb
Nestor Torres
Bobby Caldwell

Hearing Nelson Rangell whistle the Hampton Hawes tune "Sonora" is an incredible experience. He did it on a CD, but even as good as that is it just doesn't do the live performance any justice...Eric Darius recorded his first album at age 21-- he is well on his way to a brilliant career...Marion Meadows performing Stevie Wonder's "My Cheri Amore" with Timmy Maia on vocals is electrifying...

When we had Marion Meadows a few years ago, he went into a local elementary school and played for the kids. At the benefit concert he and the other musicians gave music lessons to the kids before they went onto the stage to play. It doesn't get any better than that...

I like all kinds of music. Some of my favorite rock concerts from the past include:
Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen in an 1,400 seat auditorium in 1973.
The Kink at Madison Square Garden 1981.
Elton John at MSG 1983.
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer in 1977.
Thompson Twins in 1985 at the now rubbled New Haven Civic Center.

Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes used to do a New Year's Eve concert at the Palace Theatre in Passaic, NJ. It was a ball; and without doubt the best New Year's Eves I ever spent.

I like some of the modern rock bands, but at my age I'm probably way too old to hang with the crowds there. :)

Ex, I will be very interested to see what kind of crowd shows up for The Police...

Trivium
Cannibal Corpse

Terror
The Black Dahlia Murder
Behemoth
GWAR

Give the man a seegar... you're absolutely correct. Hetfield had strayed too close to a flash pot when it fired, and got his left arm pretty well done. Both were eventually found passed out in the grass next to the parking gargage we were in. We never did see the concert, but it's a night I'll always remember :)

Reading over this thread brings back alot of mostly-forgotten memories of a misspent youth...

My 1st ever concert tickets were for Alice Cooper in 73... my mom wouldn't let me go because of the recent ruckus in the news about the chicken getting ripped to pieces at one of his shows. Bummer... I was out the roughly 7 bucks I paid for the ticket. The night of the show, my mother and her bowling league buddies were at the Camara Inn lounge in Johnson City, TN (the only hotel lounge in town back then) While they were at their table sipping white russians or whatever in hell moms who bowl drink, a bunch of roadies showed up and started setting up. Curious, they stuck around to see who the surprise secret singer was. Sure enough, Alice came in after the arena show was over, cleaned up and changed, sans makeup, and gave a 2 hour show in the bar. My mother woke me up when she got home and apologized, saying she'd make it up to me by picking up my next 3 tickets... WOW :)

If I remember right, these were the ones she paid for:

The Incredible Alex Harvey Band
Edgar & Johnny Winter
Deep Purple and Grand Funk Railroad

On the flip side of bunches of great concerts, I've walked out of two shows:

81 or 82 Seattle - Bob Dylan... he had gotten religion recently and I didn't know about that. His show truly sucked. We jammed after about an hour.

92 Memphis Pyramid - Paul Rogers & Bad Company was absolutely amazing, but they warmed up for the reconstituted Lynard Skynard, were so dischordant and fucked up that we left after about 4 songs.

Very hard to choose a "best." Best recent thing I have seen was Velvet Revolver at the 930 Club in DC, a couple years back. That was some serious rock in a small venue.

The Who in '82 was my first concert ever.

In the summer of 2000, I saw Paul Simon w/Brian Wilson, Roger Waters (now we know "which one's Pink"), and The Who, and then won tix to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers...all within a 10 day span.

The HFStival in '94, w/ INXS, Iggy Pop, Belly and I don't remember who all else was overall the most FUN I have ever had at a concert. Just a great day.

Oh crap, now I remember...1989, the Cap Center, 5th row center for Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jeff Beck. They each put on a smoking set, and then came out together for the encore and just tore up "Goin' Down" off the Orange Album, my all-time favourite Jeff Beck jam.

In keeping with the title of the thread, though, which one was the BEST? ;)

Very difficult choice.

Best in terms of music quality? Best in terms of best moment in time? Best in terms of rarity of event? Best in terms of who do I want to see over and over again? Best in terms of stage show? Best in terms of act/artist really putting it all out there? Best in terms of "it fuckin made my ears bleed and I liked it"? Best in terms of it was over before I knew it and I didn't want it to end? Best in terms of a once in a lifetime event?

The shows listed above is by no means an all-inclusive list. Many shows didn't make that list. Each of those shows is a "best" for one reason or another.

If I have to pick just one, it would be the Paul McCartney concert in the Tacoma Dome. My wife and I surprised my parents with tickets. They had no idea where we were going or what we were doing, they were just told to keep the date open and shut up.

We had great seats, could see everything, did not have to crane our necks. The accoustics of the venue were good.

There was something going on, something to see, from the moment we walked in the door. No dead time. Circque du Soleil did the openeing. It was an audio-visual orgasm with live performers, video, a music track that was spliced together by a master propagandist. He knew exactly how to underlay certain portions of songs just below the main din that was coming from the speakers to create a subliminal suggestion. All the while this enormous screen was flashing various wild stuff, time lapse film, stills, just a constant barrage of sensory input. There were acrobats and tumblers on stage in front of the screen, and costumed characters roaming the aisles on the floor. The video and the stage act were coordinated to support each other in a story. It all started off on it's own, slowly and subtlely and built on itself. You didn't realize you were watching an opening.

Then the house light started to dim, the music got louder, the pictures flashed faster, and the ending to "A Day in the Life" (last song on Sgt Pepper) began to play. At the last chord the lights went black and the screen was suddenly backlit, so all you saw was a sillouhette of a man standing on stage with a guitar held in one hand above his head.

The screen dropped and there was Paul.

We hit our feet and stayed there for an hour. He opened with Hello, Goodbye.

Paul was almost 60 years old at the time. Many of his band were not even born when he was making Beatle records.

They played a full set, then he sent to band off and he did an accoustic set, then the band came back and they did the 3rd set, plus encores. He never left the stage for over 2 hours and they played every song of his that you ever heard and liked.

The cherry on the cake was watching my parents. They gave and nurtured my love of music and were huge Beatle fans as were many of their generation. They remembered watching the Beatles appear on the Ed Sullivan Show. They had perma-grin plastered on their faces for quite a while.

And that was probably considered high priced back then.

I was just a kid, and too young to get in, but we had a place called The Cellar a couple of blocks from my house. The Who, The Rolling Stones and Clapton all played there when they were on their first tours of the states.

Those would be the best shows to be at, before the band goes big time. U2s first shows in Chicago were played at relatively small clubs, like all fledgling bands.

I do like chants, but I have not seen any performed live.

I did a stint at Borders books back in '94, when St. Bendectine Monks released their CD. That was something we'd play during rush hour, when everybody would stop off all frazzled from work and traffic.

You know what, I will have to agree with the original poster. Yes go ahead and rehash the Hate!!! :)

I have been travelling the past week, but I am here to tell you that I first saw Nickelback in 2000 or 2001 (I can't remember when) in Portland Maine with a bunch of other bands and they ABSOLUTELY ROCKED.

I am pretty dissapointed that they are coming to the Raleigh AO right after I spent some extra time on leave and will miss them.

Yes, most of their sonds sound the same, blah, blah, blah, but they freaking rock and were extremely friendly and had such a fan/party vibe, great time, don't miss them if they come to your area.
Pfffftt!
Consider the hate rehashed.:D

They say taste in music is subjective and open to interpretation.
What "rocks" to one person, may not to another.
Okay.
A young man feeling a woman's bare breast for the first time may consider that sex...
In much the same way a person after seeing a Nickleback concert may think they rocked.
:D

One happy thing I saw was Queensryche in 2005.

Just saw them last year with the wife here in Cleveland. They did a combo of the Operation Mindcrime and Empire tour numbers. It was awesome.

Yep. I was being absurd... in the same way some people use the term "punk rock" when talking about a Reverand Horton Heat show in the mid 90's.:D

Psycobilly for certain, but not Punk.

Singer from the Guana Batz moved to San Diego and still plays show there.

Check out Scissor Fight if they ever play near you, excellent show.

I haven't seen him yet, but Bob Log III is supposed to be completely awsome, one man band, rocks the house.

It was loud and fun, and Cannibal Corpse and GWAR were especially kickass.

I haven't seen GWAR yet, but I saw Cannibal Corpse in San Diego in a club called SOMA (downtown version). Not a big showing (week night), played the "Conan the Barbarian" soundtrack between sets.

The singer would talk in his Grover voice about the next song or whatever, I'd yell back "You don't talk to your mom like that, do you?" and other shit, everyone, including the band was laughing.

Went and caught the nickelback show. They rocked the house and were much better then I thought they would be. So in that light it prompted me to start a thread of best concerts.

The best show I have ever seen has to be the Band LIVE they rocked the house.

I hope that they rocked live. Why? I just wasted 25 minutes of my life listening to their crap. Jeez, I'm not gay or anything, but listening to that almost turned me. Bllleeeeccchhhhh!!!!

Bob Seger at the Key Arena in Seattle, 1996 - I thought the building was going to come apart.

Same year, (I was in Charlie School at Madigan), Battlefield Band at the Rialto, a small theater in Tacoma - you ain't lived until you hear "Bad Moon Risin'" on bagpipes. The next week they had a 3-D movie double feature, "Creature From the Black Lagoon" and "It Came From Outer Space" with cardboard glasses and all.

Long years ago ... in Anchorage, where a lot of bands used to stop over on the way to Japan - Canned Heat, Fleetwood Mac before Stevie Nicks started thinking she was the shiznit; later on, Grateful Dead (except a moron sitting in front of me played conspicuous air drums all the time), Ferron (in an auditorium filled with the entire lesbian population of Anchorage - I didn't know until the day of the show that she was gay, I swear), Johnny Cash (a great show), Tom Petty.

Bobby Caldwell

..

ALL great performers. Love Chris Botti and Diana Krall -seen them both a couple of times. Botti opened for the Hartford Jazz festival a couple years back and invited Marion Meadows up on stage for an impromtu session. No ego involved, just great music. He came out into the lobby after the show and mingled with the guests, signed CD's.

Worst/most disappointing show was Van Morrison a couple of years back. Never touched his roots and couldn't get off the stage fast enough. Ruined my image of him.

Allman Brothers twice (once w/Dicky Betts)

Santana - twice
