View Full Version : The Rockingist Song Ever

I wonder what is the most Rockingist song ever. Jammin' here, and I think the top three are

Turn Up The Night - Black Sabbath
Looks That Kill - Motley Crue
Tarot Woman - Rainbow

And before it gets out of hand, 'Freebird' and or anything by Zeppelin (except for 'Blackdog') don't make the cut.

Rockingest song?
I supose that depends on your definition of "rockingest" because there are some pretty gay answers here.

Songs with long wanking self indulgent masturbatory guitar leads do not rock.
Male singers who scream in high pitches like frightened 12 year old girls do not rock.

But loudest and heaviest doesn't always rock either.

To me, what makes a song rock is a simple catchy riff and vocals with a hook.

For example, the Rolling Stones song "Satisfaction" or the Black Sabbath song "Paranoid" are both classic simple rock songs... simple short uncomplicated catchy guitar riffs without big solos or long ballady parts. Little leads are nice to accent songs but all too often some guitarist or drummer (or worse, bass player) feels the need to masturbate on stage via a tedius solo to show off their technical prowess. If it's a "rocking" song, a solo only kills the momentum. Otherwise solos are just ways to fool the listener into thinking the band rocks... sort of the way big special effects in a movie distract the audience from the ridiculous plot.

I had a new guitarist in my band years ago who said, as we were working on a new song in rehearsal, "Hey, I could put an amazing solo in there." I responded, "I have no doubt that you could... but should you?"

I grew up on early 80's American HC/punk. So here are my choice of "rockingest" US HC/punk songs

Agent Orange "Bloodstains"
Negative Approach "Nothing"
Gang Green: "Alcohol"
Articles of Faith: "Bad Attitude"
Poison Idea: "Taken by Surprise"
Reagan Youth: "New Aryans"

Rockingest song ever... "Rock-a-bye-baby"

If the intent was to define the best rock song:
The greatest song in the world is technically the one titled -"The greatest song in the world"- by Tenacious D.
This would cover Rock, therefore, greatest/best Rock song ever.
Pointing out that "The greatest song in the world" is a Rock song only further proves this conclusion.

However, by default "Rock-a-bye-baby" is still the "Rockingest" song ever due to semantic and historical technicality.

I think there are much better Rammstein songs than "Du Hast", but that's the only one to ever get U.S. radio play.

I prefer "Gekreuzigt" ("Crucified") by Oomph! and "Gott sein" by Megaherz from the New German Hardness (NDH) scene.

Other votes for songs I don't think have been mentioned:

Ah, a logic circle. :)

Your Honor, if it pleases the Court, in the light of this development, we would like to withdraw our assertion regarding "The greatest song in the word" by Tenacious D, from further argument.

However, our position on "Rock-a-bye -baby" remains the same.

Indeed, the song "Feuer Frei" is much better. FYI, it's the song playing in the club scene in the movie "XXX", where the guy has the fire blowing face thing on.

Many guitarists have been mentioned in that one. I read today on another site that Jimi was asked what it was like to be the best guitarist in the world and his reply was "Ask Phil Keaggy."

"Ace of Spades" - Motorhead

For the critera of this thread, definatly.

"Love Removal Machine" or anything by The Cult, really, also comes to mind.

Punk Rock ain't rock B5R, just like most punk these days ain't punk. I do however, agree with the rest of your assement of "rock".

Metal ain't rock, not in the classifiaction anyway. You could classify Motorhead as metal, but it was such an early stage of that type of catagorization, that it just doesn't apply.

Glam rock doesn't equate to anything that "ROCKS". Guys wearing lipstick and rouge is an automatic disqualification.

The whole "classic rock" or "60's rock" is debatable, and should be taken on a case by case basis.

Techno, even amped up techno like Ministry or Rammstien is not rock, it's techno.

Great thread. The whole problem is defining a rock band and "rockingest". Ruling out metal eliminates the heaviest songs. I suppose what it really comes down to is what song do you crank on your brand new stereo to impress friends/scare small animals? Under my Thumb-Social Distortion

For covers,

The entire album "Undisputed Attitude" by Slayer.

Filler/In Your Head is better than the orginal by Minor Threat.

Other people in the music biz that know about it.

People I trust that would have no reason to make shit up.

I was shocked by this...I'd heard he was a family man.

I know wiki isn't 100% reliable but signs, besides what you said Matchanu, are there! Look at "social activism" section.

I might be strange, but I think the cover I like the most is Marilyn Manson's version of "Sweet Dreams" by the Eurythmics. Normally I hate Marilyn Manson, but that version of the song I like better than the original.

I wouldn't lump everyone who supports gay rights as being gay themselves.

I just have some inside info about it. It's no big deal really.

I certainly don't think it's a big deal myself. Rob Halford (Judas Priest) is gay. He also still rocks;

Breakin' the Law
Diamonds and Rust
Turbo Lover

All fit the this topic.

Most Rocking Covers:
Ring of Fire- Social Distortion
Under my Thumb-Social Distortion

You Keep Me Hangin' On, Vanilla Fudge. They got it right. Much better than the Supremes.

Stone Cold Crazy by Metallica is also much better than the original by Queen.

Johnny Cash covered 'Personal Jesus'. It is slow and with an acoustic guitar. Somehow, though, it rocks.

He also did a cover of NIN "Hurt". It isn't as good as the original, IMO, but it is pretty cool.

Johnny Thunders (RIP) proving that ballads don't have to be sappy:

Rob Halford hit on me at a Starbucks in San Diego when I was on my 3rd date with my now wife.

He was with some Marine looking guy, but kept looking over and winking at me.

Kinda cool in an odd sorta way.

I heard about him being gay in 85 from some guy whose dad was a roadie for JP. I didn't buy it at the time unitll he told me to listen to the lyrics, I mean really listen to them.

No matter, I still dig the music.

Shit, Queen rules, and that is all about gayness.

Maybe, but if you were about to insinuate that the Metalica covers of "So Fucking What" by The Anti-Nowere League, or "Last Caress" by The Misfits were even close to being as good, I'd have to fly out to your Kyzinski shack in Bublefuck AR and burn it down.

Metalica completely fucked those up.

I said he was a Marine looking guy, did not say he was a Marine.

The gay community has an entire culture of guys who get Marine high and tights. There are a lot of sub cultures in that community.

And not as far you know either.

Ever had a penis in your mouth? if so, did you like it? no? O.k. then, you ain't gay.

Any other answer is either yes, or I'm not sure.

I guess that everybody has too many songs on their IPOD and thus have skipped over-

MOTHER-Danzig
Hot For the Teacher- Van Halen
Ball and Chain- Social D
Hell Bent and Whiskey Bound- Hank jr

I thought that the answer was that if you didn't swallow, than you ain't gay.
