Looking for a tough and durable multitool. Any Suggestions?

Leatherman WAVE.
Or whatever your supply guy buys through GSA. Free=good.

I use a Victorinox SwissTool

Happy so far, but i don't really put it's through it's paces.
I had a Leatherman SuperTool also, was pretty strong until i lost it atop a mountain somewhere. Only negative on the supertool was when using the pliers, the edge would cut into my hands. SwissTool has that all fixed.

Having a Swiss Army knife with the scissors is a must. I'm guessing you are looking for a heavier type tool, but time and time again I find myself relying more on my Swiss for the easy to use blades, scissors and toothpick while out and about.

Leatherman is life-time quality as far as I know why not go with that?

My favorite is the Gerber line-up. There are scissors, and the locking mech. is easier to operate.

I've got a SOG. Good 10 years running, and wouldn't trade it.
Back when I was doing full time stage work, everyone I knew had a Leatherman or Gerber. Constant, brutal use, and no complaints from anyone. No failures, and we pretty much did everything we could to these things, including a whole lot of what you're not supposed to do to them.

Another vote for the Leatherman Wave. 2 years of heavy use, 7 years of everyday use, no problems.

I've always used the Leatherman(original) in the past. No problems except I kept misplacing the damn things. I just got issued the Gerber as part of my RFI issue. No problems so far. Free is definately better, but if your not getting it issued, shop around, put your hands on the different kinds and buy something you like. See what your buddies are carrying and ask how they like them. Ask what they like or dislike about them. Ultimately, the choice is yours, but I'll stick with free while I can.

One key difference that makes me like the Leatherman or SOG over the Gerber is the width between the handles when closed. The Gerbers leave no room for fingers when totally closed, and I find the Leatherman and SOG easier for one-handed operation as a result.

Been using the same Gerbil (Gerber) for over 10 years now. Have used it quite brutally (couple of funny stories) in Policing, Military, and now here in A'Stan. Once you get used to one type, you tend to stick with it. I've been issued 2-3 Leathermans over that period of time, and they're still sitting in their boxes.
The only thing that's broken so far is the bottle-opener, lol.

I use a Traditional Leaterman and a Swiss Army Champion. Both have been with we for the last 5 year of work overseas. Great tools.

I've got one of the newer model Gerbers (free) and it has been good and easy to use. No cap crimper, but then I don't find I need one of those too much any more :(
Carry anything Victorinox, as you'll need both the toothpick and the corkscrew :)

I like the SOG PowerPliers. They take abuse and keep giving. One word of advice: If you get a multitool that has an attachments pouch or similar so you can add sockets, etc. don't take it with you. In most circumstances of use, once you drop one of those small attachments they're simply gone. Eventually you're carrying a pouch with one attachment. Get a tool that will do the large majority of what you need without having to carry extra stuff.

On topic, I have used both leatherman and gerber....both gtg as far as I'm concerned!

Just picked up a Leatherman Charge XTi, a pimped up version of Wave. Looks like a good choice.

The Gerber's, open with one hand. Which in one instance, if that did not save my life and limb, I don't know how it didn't. And I couldn't be more serious.

Oh, what the hell... Another vote for Victorinox Swiss Tool. I've had a Leatherman Wave (broke the pliers and a couple of the screwdrivers), Gerber (pretty good, like the fast deployment of the pliers), and a SOG (did not like the hinging for the pliers). The Victorinox beat 'em all IMHO. I've had one since OIF 1 and I've used it to pound nails on numerous occassions. Never feels like it's going to twist into pieces when I tourque down on it using the pliers. All tools are accessible without opening it, and lock individually and positively into place. Many times I had a Leatherman collapse at the precise moment I needed it to hold. At $49 from the PX, it's priced competitively. I als have carried it as an ad hoc defense tool, due to the fact it's so solid and has some good heft. Fills a fist real good, and looks harmeless. Not that that is a preferred means of self defense, but might be good in a pinch.

You can't beat free but I have used the Leatherman and the Victorinox. If you're buying one my vote goes with the Victorinox. Better finish and more durable.
JMHO.

Supertool here, I like it, except for the crappy blade steel.

I have the SOG, a Gerber, and a Leatherman- just like NLN- and i agree. SOG by a mile! Oh yeah, i got it from supply! They can get them through Class IX.
I can't think of another folding multitool that you can put back wards pressure- like sticking the tip in a hole and making it bigger- no pun intended.
