I havent heard of HBT , but I am pretty sure they have something they call the Special Operation Section or SOS. I remember seeing something about one of their guys on the news back in June of 99. He was off duty and driving around Chicago in his personal vehicle running errands I think, and saw someone getting mugged or beat up. Anyway he ended up ditching his truck and running the guy down. They may have exchanged fire and the mugger got hit in "non-lethal"(wrong pharse I think) areas and was arrested buy this guy. I remember the press confreneces they were having that day and the next appearing on TV. Talking about the officer and his credentials and bravery, but that is the extent of my knowledge on the subject. Hope you found it interesting if you didn't already know it.

Yes there is a Chicago PD HBT team. I have some info. The HBT stands for Hostage-Barricade-Terrorist Team. Actually after looking over the material....they seem to appear like the NY ESU. Not as far as the job goes but because of what they wear. They wear a regular uniform, with a heavier vest and kevlar helmet. Anyway if you want more info let me know.

Chicago PD, by its nature, is very secretive.
HBT does exist and has existed for many years. Because most people have never heard of or about it does show, to great extent, how successful their ops are. They rarely, rarely ever get into any kind of shootout
or have to carry out an assault. Extremely rare. I don't know if it's the team official
motto, but I've heard their motto is: "When people lose their minds -- we're the ones to find."
I try to follow their ops, but its extremely difficult to do so. I believe they operate
a bit different than say LAPD SWAT.
Would like to hear from anyone with more info on the team.
FYI -
The T-Shirt they had back around 95 had the motto " Chicago HBT/T Sometimes you go to the circus, sometimes the circus comes to you".

Just a little update on CPD HBT -- Early on
Friday morning a suspect took over a bar on
Chicago's South Side and grabbed about ten
hostages. HBT responded and crisis negotiators spent about four hours to peacefully resolve the hostage situation.
Only one slight injury from broken glass was reported to one of the hostages.
