Anyone familiar with a good optical sight for the AR15/M16 similar to the Trijicon ACOG? Ideally, the iron sights would still be able to be used so it would have to mount on the carrying handle. Also how is the zero affected with routine handling...

If you want the best, go with the ACOG. There are many other sights available though. Holosights, red dots etc.... that will mount right up. Routine handling can mean many things. My idea of routine handling is probably a lot more abusive than yours as I normally carry an M-4 on a daily basis.

BENELLI -

Just to get this started right, I am not a "rifle officianado", though I did have to carry and qualify with the AR-15. My partner was a sniper, and thought it might be easier/quicker for me if he mounted a red dot on the AR-15 we carried in our car. We both carried sub-guns in the trunk along with his scoped rifle, so the AR-15 would be my long gun. Good Thought....it was quicker for acquiring my target, but I found it just as teadious if not more than the iron sights to shoot tight groups with at distances of 100yrds or more. The red dot gave me the false since of security, and allowed me to become lacksadasical in my shooting form, which required a conscious effort on my part anyway. When I realized this I was able to correct it, and utilize the system efficiently. As for the carry, it was in a soft case securely mounted so we had no problems with "loosing our zero". This is just my experience and my opinion. If you go to one of these systems dont make the mistake I did.

benelli,

I'd agree with Sharky, if you want the best, the ACOG is it. If you don't want to pay that much ($1k for the ACOG), Trijicon also makes a model called the reflex that is great quality and is far cheaper than the ACOG. The compact ACOG is also an option for you. (Compact ACOG = roughly $750 | Reflex = roughly $500). They also make a sight that I believe they call the OEG. It's a simple red-dot that runs about $200. (Your mileage may vary on these prices).

Personally, I like the Reflex and then the compact version of the ACOG. Which one you get is dependant on your application. The ACOG/compact ACOG's come in different models with different magnifications, etc. The reflex is IMHO better suited for CQB because it has no magnification. You can get many differnt types of mounts that will mount either directly to your carry handle or to your flattop base on the M4.

There are cheaper alternatives out there as well. Aimpoint and C-more comes to mind here. The C-more mounts so your iron sights are still usable. I don't have much experience with the C-more products though. But if it's quality and durability, go with Trijicon.

Take care and be safe.

C More is made by Colt and I would recommend them all the way. My team has them mounted on all of our M4's and we put them through alot of abuse. The C More's have performed very well for us. Also having the iron sights is very comforting as any electronic item can go on the fritz although it hasn't happened to us yet. They are very affordable (about $250) and in my opinion are the best bang for your buck.
