All,
I'm trying to find a good recommendation on a bluetooth device compatible with a Motorola W385 cell phone.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks!

what sort of bluetooth device? headset, gps reciever, modem?
if youre looking for one of those fancy-shmancy earpiece things, i picked up a motorola earpiece for about $40 from the local radio shack. bit bulky compared to some other models, but it works for me. if your phone is bluetooth capable, you can use any headset with it, just follow the directions for conneting devices

Nice...I was actually looking at that one earlier today online.
What concerns me about these devices, is that all the reviews are so inconsistent. I'm chalking this up to the implication that there are still a lot of variables that have not been sorted out with this technology yet.
My main concern would be for clarity and voice recognition, on both ends. What kind of phone are you operating this with?

H -
Thanks for the input. Are you using this in conjunction with a Motorola phone? I looked at this one as well...really conflicting reviews out there. It did seem to get higher ratings than the H350 though. Also seems to depend on the phone...was wondering what our other Bluetoother was using as well...
Did you find that Amazon had the best rate?
Thanks again guys...I did a bunch of research prior to purchasing the phones we have...so I don't want to bomb it with the wrong assessories!!;)

Cco, yeah, I use it with a Motorola RAZR V3XX. It's got pretty good battery life, but I'm not an on the phone all the time type, either. Still, I usually only hafta charge it every 3-4 days.
The Amazon price is WAYYYY less than what I paid for mine. I got mine at BestBuy for about $100, so don't I feel like an idiot.
No one has ever told me they hear me any differently, or worse when I'm talking to them on the headset, although I have occasionally dropped calls when I answer on the phone and try to sycnh up the headset while I'm on the call. But that's probably just user error.
Let me know if there's anything else I can tell ya'.
ccorgr175
22 November 2007, 09:23
Rodger that. Thanks again.
Knowing what you are using it with definitely helps. I've never had any problems with amazon; however, I did hear about a run of fake H700 floating around on the internet. I'll just have to tread with caution.

I use a couple of different Jabra ear sets with a Moto RAZR.
I like the Jabras because of their "in the ear" design. They have these little ear buds that actually stick into your ear canal. I need an "in the ear" design because my ears are demolished, I cannot hear anything, particularly if there is background noise. These little ear buds channelize the sound right into my ear.
I tried a couple of "outside the ear" units, one of which was from Moto, and they worked like ass for me. I was too deaf to use them.
These Jabra units use some kind of silicone for the ear buds, and they have a couple of different designs, so they are not uncomfortable, and they do not make your ear itch. Jabra includes several spares with the ear set, so you can switch them out until you figure out which one is most comfortable for your ear canal, or if you lose one, you have extras. You hang the thing onto your ear, tuck the ear bud into your ear canal, and you forget about it. I have walked into the shower wearing one a couple of times, and once, I jumped into a swimming pool wearing one. Yes, I had to replace them.
:)
I probably look like a schizophrenic talking to myself when I am on the phone, but they work good. I first twigged to them when I noticed the staff at the Landmark Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong all wearing them.
As for model numbers, I use both the 250-series and the 500-series. The 500-series has more bells and whistles, it will vibrate when the phone rings, which is handy when you have the ringer turned off, for example. I find that the 250-series works just fine, though, it is more simple, and cheaper, with longer battery life. I go about three or four days between recharges.
Hope that helps.

Bluetooth is Bluetooth
Its all about price.
Last year, I bought 5 Nokia Bluetooth Earpieces that were being disontinued ($5 each, but no warranty), gave to friends and family - kept one. This year they are all still working fine. I was the only one with a Nokia phone.
Don't overspend - you don't need to.

Battery life is fine, I suppose. I hate Motorola's charge cord connection and you will NOT plug the damned thing in quickly and easily while driving -- simply because some assclown engineer at Motorola thought that it would be cute to have a connection type that was unique enough to prevent you from using someone else's power source or charge cord. Finally, if there is any ambient noise in YOUR background, it makes it hard to hear your caller....

The Jawbone turned out to be the best.
My husband works in the downtown business district (read: tall buildings and lots of interferance) and had bad reception problems with a Jabra. He now uses a Jawbone with his Razr 3VXX, and it works great. Or at least he can hear me, and that's all that is important. ;) :D
Seriously, he found it to be well worth the money, 'cause now the Chief doesn't get disconnected. :D

Actually, the majority of Motorola's phone products use a standard mini-usb port. The same cable I use for my Kodak digital camera and sony psp also lets me charge my headset, my old razr and my t mobile wing (with included adapter) via usb.
magician, any specific jabra models you recommend? my ears probably aren't as bad as yours, but 4 years in the FA certainly didn't do them any good. The H350 never got loud enough and this might be a good time to upgrade, seeing as how it's NMC now. Looking at their website, I'm not sure which models you mentioned.

It is now illegal to talk on a cell phone without a hands free device while driving in some states and on most, if not ALL Military bases - like the one I work at.

Well wonder no more, it is illegal in CT, MA, NJ, and NY to drive while talking on your cell phone without one. I live in CT and I travel to all 3 other states previously mentioned.. Although generally I do not where one in public, it is incredibly handy - no pun intended - when you are traveling and simply do not have enough hands with all the shit one must carry.
Trust at a minimum when I say that I didn't buy this piece of crap to try and 'connote' importance or for the 'flashy blinking LED'. And while I'm not a betting man, I would venture a gamble that ccorgr175 and all the others that have responded as well....did not purchase this crap to appear important....but I could be wrong, SOTB really does like blinky flashy things.

In my husband's case, it was a matter of officer safety, both his safety and the safety of his men. Certainly not a "waste of money" on "crap."

Under rare and unusual circumstances, when driving and talking on a mobile phone coincide, I use the cheap wire guided earpiece that came with the phone instead of some technocrappy $100+ flashy flashy piece of jewelry
How hard would it be to hack (http://crack0hack.wetpaint.com/page/How+to+hack+bluetooth+mobile/revision/8?t=anon) someones phone via their bluetooth port if they left it on all the time? How far can bluetooth be intercepted?

It depends - if you are in building or other public area, and you have not applied the simplest of security to your system at all, you could be hacked by some one who was about 20 to 30 feet away - if you are in your car, I would check the back seat.

Or they remotely upload software into your high speed $400+ "I-am-better-than-you" phone to listen to your nearby conversations (http://www.news.com/2100-1029_3-6140191.html)(requires a court order) or track your movement via the phones GPS tracking feature or GSM towers (http://www.news.com/Snooping-by-satellite/2100-1028_3-5533560.html)(does not require a court order). Turning your phone off is futile; you must peal the battery off the back or jam the GPS/GSM signal (http://www.globalgadgetuk.com/Y050TG.htm). The Patriot Act is a bitch!
or build your own (http://www.phrack.org/archives/60/p60-0x0d.txt) ;)

My husband's "squad car" is a bicycle. To be effective for police work, a bicycle cannot be used in the same manner as a squad car. Effective police work on a bicycle means jumping curbs, riding up and down stairs, riding through gravel parking lots littered with pot holes and broken glass, weaving through snarled motor vehicle traffic, etc.
The unique demands of police work on a bicycle mean that my husband often must ride in the manner I've described while talking on his cell phone. It is simply not safe to do so while holding a cell phone in one hand. And, no, not answering the phone when the Lt. or the Chief calls is not an option.
The wire on the type of ear piece you describe would catch on the handlebars or his equipment belt, thus yanking the ear piece from his ear. Reeling in the dislodged ear piece while riding in the manner described above would be both impractical and unsafe. The only option, then, is a Bluetooth device. So, yes, a Bluetooth device keeps my husband safe.
Further, the brand new, "state-of-the-art", computer-aided police and fire dispatching system that cost $6 million and took 3 years to develop has a habit of frying all 3 of its servers, thereby completely disabling all police and fire communications city wide. The only communications route available to my husband in that situation is his cell phone, a cell phone that he uses in rather unique conditions. So, yes, a Bluetooth device keeps my husband safe.

Some people really aren't very bright.
And if anyone is concerned about bluetooth security, simply set your phone visibility to hidden. Won't make any difference when you pair with a device like a handset (since you do that search from the phone), but will make the phone invisible to anyone who tries to send you a file via bluetooth (I did this after someone attempted to send me a file by bluetooth on the Skytrain).

I haven't been keeping up with developments in bluetooth since I left Motorola, but it appears that the Jawbone device by Aliph has supplanted the Moto unit in the last couple of years.
Regardless of what you go with, it's great that the industry could agree on a standard that would work with all phones, at least as a bridge technology. I still wonder if bluetooth will live up to the full potential that its architects originally intended.

If you're phone supports Bluetooth v1.2, this is a heck of a unit. Works great, easy to use, but it's a lot more than probably needed just for speech (although the headphones approach helps a lot with ambient noise issues).

I got conned into buying a Plantronics voyager 510. I'm not going to go into the details of the purchase seduction, but I did buy two. One for me, and one for my AFC (Assistant Family Commander). In summary, they performed great, but the fit sucked. Way too bulky behind the ear piece. Then, on top of that, the same month we purchased them, Plantronics came out with the upgraded 520.
After looking at the 520 we promptly wrapped the 510's up and sent them packing...back to Amazon...Amazon was great by the way. I had cash back in within 12 days.
Now we have the 520's...no complaints. I still like the feedback I got on the Jawbone but I didn't have the cash for two at the time...520's are holding hard after two weeks...thanks again for all the input!
