I have a good heart rate monitor but I am now looking for something with a GPS function. I have been looking at this (https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=270) and this (https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=142&pID=349). Does anyone have one of these or another they are partial to? I'm looking for one that I can calculate the weight of a ruck into and one that does not go by a pace count. Any (helpful:p ) comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

On the Slowtwitch.com forums theres tons of post on the Garmin GPS Hrms. How do you calculate ruck weight into these? Just add to body weight? Do they ask for user body weight?

I have the forerunner and it's a decent wrist unit. It will lose signal in moderately forested areas and under thick cloud cover.
Battery life it decent but my unit uses a charging pack that you have to plug into the wall. wish it were capable of batter replacement.

I have the 305 and like it a lot so far. There are plenty of programs you can use to track your workouts. My battery only lasts about 10 hours (I think) so it really won't work as a normal watch if you had that in mind...

Hey snaplink,
Any updates on which Garmin you purchased? I'm looking at the same two you are. I'm leaning towards the 301. It does basically the same thing as the 305 minus the hefty price difference. Or should I just hold off a little longer and get the 305 when I can. Any thoughts? comments.

I'm still holding out. I have a Polar HR monitor that I want to get some more use out of before I plop down more cash. I have a RGR buddy who has the 301. He likes it, but if I remember correctly he said it did not have a light:confused: .

Yeah, its an old thread, but better than starting a new one.
Just got an awesome deal on a refurbed Forerunner 405 with HRM from universalmania.com (never heard of them before, but customer support was awesome and shipping was fast). Couldn't beat the price and it still has a 1 year warranty. The only difference from the new 405CX is that the 405CX has more accurate calorie burn calculations, but that is not a big deal to me (really don't care about calories). The feature set is pretty nice, but I haven't used it (yet - just got it an hour or so ago, had to charge, then program - so the first run will be in a few). The only color they have in stock now is green, not a big deal to me even though it does look like crap, but for the price, I really don't care.
Olive Drab - I fully intend to use it for rucking, but I'm not going to change weight everytime in set-up. All it would affect is calories burned (maybe?), which I don't care about anyway...
About $160 off retail - http://www.universalmania.com/_e/Fitness/product/010-00658-22/Garmin_Forerunner_405_w_HR_USB_ANT_Stick_Green.htm

Used it a few times now, and it is awesome.
