I have a question regarding law enforcement job opportunities. I’m going to be getting out of military in a couple years (never too soon to start looking) and was wondering what will be available. I have a background in military LE so I would like to pursue this line of work. I haven’t done too much job research, but the jobs that I have seen have an age requirement of 35. With 20 years of service, I will be 40 when I get out. Just wondering how much my age will hurt me.

What jobs are you looking at that require you to be 35? Most LE jobs require only that you be 21 at the date of hire. There was a guy who was 50 in my academy..

<I think that he was referring to the maximum age which one can be at the time of application.>
I wish that I could provide you with some info, but it seems that age regs vary from dept to dept. I know that you wouldn't be at any disadvantage whatsoever when/if you applied to my dept, but, from what I have heard from reliable sources, other depts have cutoffs at age 36.
Who would you like to work for? Or, more importantly, where are you planning on establishing a residence upon separating from the military?

Blah, you will have to check with whatever agency you want to get hired with. My dept. has a few guys that are retired military.
Also, unless you really want to work for one specific agency, test with as many as you can as that will increase your odds of getting hired. You can then try to lateral to another dept. at a later date.

A lot of agencies will waiver age for people who are retired military. They just dont want people who have been working odd jobs, or suddenly got up one day and decided to be cops. With military, they will see you have a work history of commitment. Most people dont make career changes at 35-40 yrs, so it raises a red flag when they suddenly want to be in Law Enforcement, however with retired military, they look at it differently.

blah, you will not be eligible for a federal law enforcement job which are the jobs that require you to be less than anywhere from 37 to 35 years of age due to mandatory retirement age set by congress for 1811 series GS employees. You will only be eligible for state and local LE and should check each agency before applying. Curious what MOS are you in the military?

In addition to the Fed's some state agenices have a age cap that can not be waived. Look around, there are plenty of depts that are looking. "If they want you, they'll hire you."
