5 Guys isn't bad for a mass market franchise place, still isn't Paradise Pup(Des Plaines, IL) or Kuma's(Chicago). Haven't had In-n-Out, and I have to say, from the pictures, it doesn't look that impressive. Unless they're putting heroin in the meat, those patties just don't seem to justify the rabid fiending that the place seems to provoke in consumers.
Another good place is Hackney's, which does excellent burgers on fresh rye bread as well as an impressive onion loaf (like super thin rings) They have several locations in Chicago area, but the place on Harms Ave in Glenview is really cool and set back in the woods like a residence, you can't tell it's a restaurant from the street. Very nice classic wood paneled bar too. A burger, some rings and a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned is like stepping back into the 1950's, when men were Men, women were Women and all was right with the world:smile: S/F.....Ken M

Paradise Pup is awesome. Was on the way whenever I made the Schaumburg to Skokie drive along Oakton.
I voted In-N-Out from the options above. I like it the best and probably because it's the most accessible in my locale as well. It's fresh food, portions are properly sized, and it hits the spot everytime.
I had Umami Burger this past weekend in LA. It was pretty good for "gourmet" burger place. I sampled two burgers - one was their namesake Umami Burger and the other called the Manly Burger. They only make their stuff medium rare and condiments are house made. Since they have a full bar, having a beer with the burger was a treat and the buns were toasted just right.
Just like beer, lots of varieties of burgers. I like crappy burgers and good burgers, with everything in between. What I DON'T like is burgers that bill themselves to be something they are not. I can't complain when I get a Double Double, drink, and fries from In-N-Out for 5 bucks in California.
Anyone try the Four Horsemen Burger at Chunky's Burgers in San Antonio?
It's a burger with Serrano Peppers, Jalapenos, Habeneros, and Ghost Peppers.

Five Guys are all over California now, so yeah, we have both.

Been there after watching it on Man V Food and having a couple of extras hours to spare before my flight out. That joint has some good burgers. However, I did not try the four horseman burger. But I did have the good fortune to watch two people give it a go.
The first was a "big old girl with sturdy feet". You know...Ranger hoggin' material. She made it about three quarters the way through...in less than 5 minutes. Looked like she took an extended shot of OC to the face. During her brief "operational pause", she decided to wipe her face with her hand (it's a technique...albeit not a good one) and once the juice got in her eye...she was outta there.
Second contestant was some dude talking mega-shit to his girlfriend. He ...no shit...took one bite, quit 15 seconds in...and spent the next 30 minutes I was in there standing next to the soda fountain. The owner gave him shit the whole time. Said he was going to put him up on the wall as the quickest quitter he has seen.
I always stop by that joint when I am in town.

I don't understand how people can enjoy that sort of thing. You don't taste anything, only heat and pain. Why not save money and just spray some OC in your mouth? S/F.....Ken M
If anybody is around Fayetteville NC, ya gotta go try Hot-Diggity-Dog.
Great family owned place and great Carolina burgers. They only have two locations, Roxy Ave and Ramsey st near the cement place.

Hackney's blue cheese burger on dark rye is one of my all time favorites. A Blue cheese burger, onion loaf and a manhattan, you're talking my language. Had a Five Guys burger on Willow Road last week. Burger was pretty good but I didn't try the fries, sounds like a good thing from the critiques.

And all the current and ex-hooahs that have posted on this thread should just start knockin' 'em out right now for not mentioning the Four Winds in Cusseta, Georgia.

Grill 'Em All burgers. If you ever have the time to track down the truck, wait in line for your order, and find a place to eat it before it gets cold, it is amazing. I know my marketing sucks, but seriously, the actual burger is worth the effort. Thinking about it right now makes me hungry...

I know I'm a little behind on the 5 Guys/In N Out debate, but I figured I'd throw my .02 in anyways. Being from California born and raised, everyone always talked about how great In N Out was. I personally never drank the Kool Aid. Yeah, I've been there but was never that impressed. Last year, when I got orders to Quantico, my roommate wouldn't shut up about 5 Guys, so we went. I must say I'm much more impressed with them than I am with In N Out.

Yesterday, while conducting my usual "testing in the name of science" lunch run, I came across an unlikely yet excellent burger stand in Niles, IL called the "Tic-Toc Grill". Unfortunately, I think it might be doomed by a shit location, back side of a corner lot off two main streets with no visibility. I should have taken a picture.
Roughly similar burger in dimensions to 5 Guys, with a superior grind of meat IMO(fairly coarse grind, hand formed) cooked to preference. Served on a pretzel bun, although other types are available, I'm told. Multiple different toppings available, I tried one made with halves of a kielbasa layered on top along with grilled onions and mustard. Was great, but probably approaching 2000 calories:eek: Fries are the short coming of the place (just like McDonalds, which is OK if you like that type, I prefer real potatoes) but the onion rings look as if they may have potential, but have not tried them. If you're in the area, it's worth a try. S/F....Ken M

I'm still amazed at all the variations of the hamburger that exist.
In the PBS special Hamburger America there was even a burger that was topped by peanut butter. I guess I shouldn't knock it until I've tried it...but peanut butter?

I'd try just about anything once, but I'd like to know if there's a special kind of peanut butter or do you just take a scoop out of a jar of Skippy and spread it on.
Here's a link to a site that covers most of the joints that were featured in the special. The burger I was thinking of was called a Guberburger and is served up by the Wheel Inn down in Missouri.

I also use the previous on sausage patties....

Foxy's Landing Resturant, William J Fox Airport (KWJF),Lancaster CA, Just outside Edwards AFB. They are open 0700-1500 daily. IIRC
They are known to have a Peanut Butter Burger or PB Squared as its known.
Was a bit nervous but actually pretty good. They had people lined up for them when I was there.
The best burger I ever had was at Rossi's on Joe DiMaggio corner in the Chambersburgh section of Trenton NJ. I grew up about 100 feet from the place and it has some history of famous visitors; i.e. Politicians , Athletes, Mafioso,..etc. Chambersburgh has turned to shit over the years but Rossi's still remains. It's a tiny dark little bar but it's famous for their "Rossi Burger." It's a secret recipe and comes out looking like a meatball on a bun. Any time I'm in that AO I go there and hammer a couple.

Definitely Five Guys. You people outside of Arlington/DC are in luck as they are expanding. A couple of years ago there were just one or two franchises, now there's no telling how many.
As long as they stick to the business model it should stay good for awhile - at first each brother had a store so quality control was spot on. I've had the original, the one in Alexandria, the Navy Yard and Georgia Ave and they've all been excellent though.
There used to be a drive through burger joint on Yadkin Rd up past the military surplus store (whose name I forget) on the left. It was past Generous George's (wasn't that the Greek/sub place?). They had pretty good burgers when I was a broke assed paratroop. They're all over NYC now too.
Anyone mention Johnny Rockets yet? Great burgers, great chocolate cokes....Seriously? Their shakes are OK (but hell, I've had McDonalds shakes that were as good or better), but their burgers are about on the level of pitiful....

All we got are McD's, Burger King, and Wendies is reportedly coming down.
Don't listen to any Aussies talking about Hungry Jacks...it's Burger King under a different name.
So no well known gourmet big burger joints down here than I know of....Australasia is all about the meat pies.
Someday...an Aussie or a Kiwi is going to be the meat pie king of America. :)
Not trying to go TOO off topic, but has anyone ever been to Capriotti's?

Saw on the news this morning that In-N-Out is opening today in Allen and Frisco...might have to cancel my lunch meeting.I finally had the time and opportunity to stop in and check one of these out -- the Frisco one, to be exact.
Lines were pretty long -- out the door stuff.
They seem to have a platoon of employees behind the counter, makes sense, but it looks crowded back there. Everything was spotless and the employees seemed friendly and highly motivated.
As to the food. I had a Double-Double and a chocolate shake. The wife had a cheeseburger and a Coke. We shared an order of fries.
As stated by others, the fries sucked. No, seriously -- I think they rank amongst the shittiest fires I've had at a place that sells them cooked. The shake was pretty good. I thought the burger was good, but not better -- or even as good -- as 5 Guys. The wife thought the burger was better than 5 Guys.
So there you have it, it is official, 5 Guys remains a better burger joint than In-n-Out (my wife's opinions have no weight here, LOL)....

We have some guys from Offut in-house for training today and they’re all about hitting I-N-O, so that’s the plan for lunch. Not sure if it’s worth waiting in line to get in, though...
It’s been a couple of years since I’ve had I-N-O. I used to always stop at the one near the San Luis Rey gate on my way to Camp P, so it was kind of part of being in California. I’m interested to see how well it will translate to Texas.

thought I'd toss in my .02.....In Madison, WI, there are several excellent burger joints, but the 2 I'd recommend are Brothers Three Grill & Bar (off of Fair Oaks & Hwy 30) & The Club Tavern (In Middleton off of Branch Street). Brothers Three serves a 1/2 pounder that might be the sloppiest/juicest burger ever, but it is awesome. The Club Tavern is famous for their Moose Burger (named after the Tavern owner, Moose). Its a 1/2 pounder with ham, special bbq sauce, mushrooms, swiss, mozzarella and cheddar cheese. Its a heart attack waiting to happen, but well worth the wait!!! Enjoy!

Just had a Fatburger (in Long Beach, not Redondo though). I actually thought as I ate it "Hmm, I can post about this on SOCNET." Now, where would I rank Fatburger in the pantheon of burger chains?
I had a Large cheeseburger with a medium Fry and drink. $10.75! WTF. I could buy three burgers from Cook Out for that price. Anyways, the meat was pretty good, tasted fresh and not too greasy or pre-formed patty-like. The bun was uninteresting, just standard fare no frills bun. A little too much mustard. The fat fries were good although they didn't taste fresh. Generally I'm not a fry fan due to the amount of salt they stick on them, but these were only lightly salted and not overcooked.
Better than In 'N Out, definitely, but not quite as good as Five Guys or even Cook Out. If a food chain is going to make you self-conscious from their name , I'd expect a little more bang especially for the buck.

I went to Steak n Shake yesterday for lunch and it sucked. The burger was decent, but the service was slower than shit.
I ordered a burger and a milkshake. Waited about 10 minutes for water, then waited another 20 minutes for food; food came, I ate then waited another 5 minutes. Still no milkshake. The waitress talked to the manager and when I went to pay he said, pretty loudly in front of the entire restaurant, "why should I give you free milkshakes when they just didn't get there in time?"
Well fuck you, dude.
I said "I finished my meal and am ready to pay and they still aren't there".
He ended up taking the shakes off the bill and took off an additional $3.

For burger fans, the best restaurants include In-N-Out Burger, rated highest of all 53 chains, Burgerville (39 in Oregon and Washington), Five Guys Burgers and Fries (750 nationwide and in Canada), Culver's (428 mainly in the Midwest), and Back Yard Burgers (120 mostly in the South and East).

Well, I finally had the opportunity to try a Five Guys. We never had any located in my area and recently had one come in and opened about two months ago. I have to say that I can now see why they are so liked. It is some good eatin' to say the least -- they certainly get my vote.
About 10 years ago, Whataburger came to my city and built a restaurant from the ground up. They were here for about eight months and closed the doors tight. It was aggravating to me because I really liked them and always ate at their restaurants when I was traveling next door in Texas. I was glad to see them come but not so glad when they left. I always thought they had good hamburgers -- I guess no one else did. With that said, my city has the innate ability of allowing major food chains to open up and then die a quick and painful death in a very short time.

Gourmet: McGuires in either Destin or Pensacola.
For fast food, there is a small local chain in MS and AL called Wards. They make a chili-cheese burger that is almost as addictive as crack, and probably just as unhealthy! To make things worse, they are open for breakfast, and you could get one from 5 am till 9 pm. I lived on them in paramedic school. Soggy greasy (awesome) fries...the 6 dollar combo was a heart attack waiting to happen. First place I go when I'm in that area.

For a new place Johnny Bigs in Ohio is pretty damn good. They have a 4 ,1/4 pound burger, with a grilled cheese sandwhiched between and large fry deal. Eat it all and get your picture on the wall. Eat it in 20 minutes and it is free. Their burgers come stacked. Lots of choices as well...other than that....5 Guys.

If you're ever in Danville, PA there's the Old Forge Brewing Company. Got 7 microbrew beers on tap at any given time and some excellent burgers. Messy, cook knows what medium means versus grilling the hell out of it and instead of fries they give you tortilla chips with a beer/cheddar/salsa dip that rocks.
And the Bullfrog Brewery in Williamsport, PA has a pretty large burger menu. Tried a few and I've always been happy with my choices.

There's a new hamburger joint, apparently part of a chain that got its start in Denver, that just opened locally.
They're going to be opening a few more locations soon, wondering if anybody has ever eaten there and if it's any good.
http://www.smashburger.com/
Went to the one in Arlington Heights, it's pretty good. Burger patty is similar to a Steak and Shake, slightly thicker, variety of toppings is good and fresh. Fries are OK, McD's thin style. Sweet potato fries are good alternative.
Five Guys is more burger, but variety is the spice of life, so I'll eat at Smashburger again. S/F.....Ken M

Yup, ... Who can complain about cow topped with smoked pig!!!
Price, for sure, but I'd rather eat at Chucks once a month and save my food dollars for something else, like cold beers, which they serve... you can drink a pint or two, and if you are veggie or something else, her chicken place is just to the south, like one store front to the south...

A while back, the wife and I stopped in at Ted's on our way to Vermont.
They're famous for their steamed cheeseburger and I'd read a bit about them and decided to give them a try.
Here is a short (4 minute) YOUTUBE video from Man V. Food showing their burgers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSoivxhC8Og)
I thought it was completely underwhelming.
The streamed meat was tasteless... the steam cooks through too completely for my taste, leaving everything grey.
But the hunk of steamed cheddar on the burger (not quite melted or at all runny) had a unique texture from the steam tray and tasted amazing.
I left half the burger, but finished the cheese.
I didn't take this pic, but it's a good representation.

Has anyone here tried the Heart Attack Grill out in Las Vegas?
It sounds completely unhealthy ...and awesome.
Everything is fattening, customers wear hospital gowns and the waitresses (called nurses) wear slutty nurse outfits, everything is fried in lard, they use butterfat for their milkshakes, in addition to quadruple-decker burgers, they offer cigarettes...
If you can eat an entire quadruple bypass burger, the nurses will wheel you out to your car in a wheelchair
Has anyone been there?
I'm really curious to hear about it since it seems so over the top.

Both, actually. If I'm using venison that I had processed at our local processor, then it's cut with about 15-20% beef fat. HOWEVER, I also process my own, and when I do, I don't cut it with anything.
I should dispel the rumor that uncut ground venison cannot be grilled into burgers or it will "fall apart." I actually prefer making burgers out of my own processed venison, simply due to the fact that it's in it's purest form.
I'll typically drop it all into a mixing bowl, drizzle it liberally with EVOO, add soy sauce, worscestershire sauce, freshly chopped red onion, freshly crushed garlic, salt & pepper to taste, then mix thoroughly for about five minutes.
Let that sit for a couple hours or a couple of days.
Throw them on the grill under low to medium heat, and there should be no "crumbling" of the lean cuisine. The marinate coupled with the EVOO above (or that of your choice) will do a pretty good job of keeping everything together.
...And don't forget the cheese. ;)

Hmm is that picture from today? If so epic fail. No place worth its reputation should be serving tomatoes in winter. They only grow in the heat of summer so clearly these were grown somewhere hot and shipped in - which means they were engineered for shipping quality, not taste quality.

I leave you with this, KidA, maybe it will remind you of Georgia?
My neighbor Carl, he lives next door
Pink flamingos on his porch
At night he teaches driving school
And he sits out by his plastic pool
He takes off his shirt and he opens up a cold one
Ol' Carl Dean's a fool, but it takes one to know one
Music's playing up and down the block
Mostly christian, blues, country, folk, and southern rock

That's weird about 5 Guys being a restaurant. The ones back east only have counter space or small round tables and bar stools for maybe 15 people in each one and they were cheap as hell. For about six bucks you could get a burger and an entire paper sack filled with fries that you'd never be able to finish.

O'Malley's Bar and Grill in Palmer Lake, just north of Colorado Springs has some great burgers. Kind of a biker stop on a side highway off the interstate (105), and not bad if you don't a few flies. It's also one of those places that does dinner with everything on the menu served raw on request and then you take it to a large indoor community grill to cook it the way you want. Kinda fun sometimes. Late morning/lunch time, the burgers are very good, nothing fancy.

I've seen new In-N-Out locations on 75 and 635 in Dallas now, and it seems the locals are chilling out a bit and there aren't lines around the block anymore. I'm wondering if In-N-Out will lose some of its mystique now that I can get it anytime...I have noticed that I rarely go to 5G anymore in DC now.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this one but All-American in Massapequa NY.
Good old fashioned burgers served in a foil packet, fries and shakes made with real ice cream. Consistently rated one of the best in the country (and approx 11 miles from me).

You are close to HBC too, its on Beretania right across from the Graces Inn. Turn left onto beretania from Keeamoku go down about 1/4 mile. Its on the left in the building directly across the parking lot from Colortyme (dont park on that side, they tow). If you get the garlic fries, dont schedule any meetings for the rest of the day. They do not skimp on the garlic!!
I will have to hit it soon....
If you get down to my 'hood anytime soon....let me know. I live at the Elks Lodge on Waikiki for the most part. Decent food and cheap booze.....and right on the beach....

I've had Five guys. Multiple times, just not in the 8Ball way. I guess they figured when they franchised they'd jack up the prices since none of you would know the difference.
Still haven't made it to In and Out.
And....
I fucking hate you. Again.
I have to consistently come on here just to protect my good name and virtue. At least SOTB laid off. Unlike your homosexual projecting self.
I do like the greasy "Pre Cath Lab" Burger at Five Guys, though. The fries suck small Vespa owning penis's.

I agree on the fries. Just because you give me a small Idaho potato farm in a bag, doesn't mean they're good.
Now the burgers rock. Any time grease runs down your arm while you're eating it, that's a good burger

If you ever find yourself in Juba, South Sudan.. the D'Nile bar at the AFEX compound makes one of the best burgers I have ever eaten...
No shit, hands down, beats 95% of the burgers I have eaten in the US to include all of the "chain" burgers mentioned in this thread..
Cost for 2 burgers, plus fries, a drink, and desert was about $9
