There's only one way to get a truly great burger. Fresh beef from the KC or Chicago stockyards and a grill. Make it yourself.

I only eat homemade. I take diet very seriously. Not sure what Carl's Jr. is or In-N-Out but the rest discust me. The worst on the list has to be McDonalds the thought of the place almost makes my stomach turn. I MIGHT eat at Sonic if I am in a rush. The order would be a chicken sandwich or a salad not a burger usually. Other than that if it is not an actual restaurant like Chili's, Ruby Tuesdays, etc... it's a nogo.
PS. I despise McDonalds as much as I dislike the idea of Hillary being our next president.
Edit: http://www.fuddruckers.com/ posted by Zealot doesn't seem bad. Never been there though.

I work in the restaurant business and now a few people who work at those places... If you watch your diet they're not exactly the healthiest places to eat.. That being said it sounds like you'd have a salad or chicken so I suppose it doesn't matter too much, they're truly hard to F up.

IMO, nothing beats a good ol' home made hamburger. Grade AAA sirloin beef, made by you on an outdoor or indoor grill, nice and fresh off the grill with the condiments you want.
If I'm out and about and really want a burger, I'll settle for Wendys and usually go for a chicken burger.

Fast food burgers are garbage. If I have burgers with my kids it's homemade... lean ground sirloin, medium rare, barbecued outoors in the summer or broiled indoors in the winter.
My kids get excited when dad is making burgers and my wife rolls her eyes and walks away. She's a vegetarian. (more meat for us :D )
The only times we've had burgers out has been at an occasional diner.

Only make burgers and fries (and I think maybe a hot dog). Nothing else. You can get a small burger (one patty) or a burger (two patties). The fries are made in peanut oil and they have boxes of peanuts to eat while you wait.
Fresh (never frozen) Grade A beef and french fries cut from potatoes on sight. Good business model, as they are all pretty much identical and only serve 3 items tops.
I was skeptical when I first moved to the area, but I have since drank the Kool-aid.

Burgers are about as subjective as a good steak. Regional differances are as veried as with Hot dogs. That being said my favorite burger is a Rufus burger from our very own Rufuses restaurant. It has two patties and a generous helping of Velvetta cheese. It also has to be ordered "all the way". Now this is southern style so "all the way" comes with Mayo, Mustard, Slaw, and Chilli.
As for grilling your own burger try Bubba burgers, they can be found in the frozen section. All you need to do is add salt and pepper.

Definitely Five Guys. You people outside of Arlington/DC are in luck as they are expanding. A couple of years ago there were just one or two franchises, now there's no telling how many.
As long as they stick to the business model it should stay good for awhile - at first each brother had a store so quality control was spot on. I've had the original, the one in Alexandria, the Navy Yard and Georgia Ave and they've all been excellent though.
There used to be a drive through burger joint on Yadkin Rd up past the military surplus store (whose name I forget) on the left. It was past Generous George's (wasn't that the Greek/sub place?). They had pretty good burgers when I was a broke assed paratroop.

I remember back in 1992 when 5 Guys started with one or two places in Arlington, and everyone from Ft. Myer would go there for lunch. The burgers were dirt cheap back then. Now, thankfully, they're expanding. There's one in North Raleigh right near my house, there's on in Fayetteville at the godawful mall there, and I keep seeing them in random places around the country.
Great quality meat, reasonable prices. If you like Fuddruckers, odds are you'll like 5 Guys better.

True dat. I recently took my daughter to the new store in NY. I ordered a large for us to share and the guy behind the counter talked us out of it. We ended up getting the small fries and still didn't finish them.

If you are down in Atlantic City and feel like spending a lot of money on sliders, there is this place called Continental that makes really good Kobe Sliders. Of course you will pay top $ for the Kobe beef.
If you consider two a chain - Big Nick's on the Upper West Side. Those of you that have gone post linkup know the place. Yummy!

They had a Fuddruckers (funny, I remember calling it something slightly different...) in Yonkers where you could watch them hack a slab of meat off a cow hanging from a hook, watch them grind the meat, and then cook it. Great food, eventually got rid of the window.
ExpatMedic: Did you ever eat at Herfy's in Riyadh? They promoted "100% beef" and had very clear pictures of goats hanging up all over the place. Goatburgers weren't so bad, though. :D

In Downtown Sacramento there is a burger place called Nationwide Freezer Meats. Started out as a meat packing place. The owner started grinding up fresh beef and making burgers for his worker's lunch. Over the years the meat business went away and now its just burgers. Pricey but worth every penny you spend.
I remember seeing Herfy's in the Olaya District IIRC, thinking I havn't eaten there since I was a kid and they were still in California.
Theres even a Fuddruckers in Riyadh.
What's really cool is gettin KFC delivered to our SANG compound, after a night of drinking Black Label, for about SR30 for a bucket.

1. My back yard hands down.:D
2. Whenever I go home to Va Beach, I always like to go to Bubba's on Shore Drive and have a Bubba Burger (no not the frozen kind;) ). Comes with crab and bacon on top. If anything, I like to hang out on the dock, watch the boats go by, and have a cold one. A lot of memories there growing up.
3. I will have to agree with Fire Gunner on the McGuires Pub in Destin, FL. I ate there alot in EOD school and the burgers where huge.
4. Never had a buffalo burger until I came to Colorado. I think they are good along with elk. My wife on the other hand would disagree with that statement though.:p

Homemade is the way to go.
PBS aired a special a few years back about the variations on the great American hamburger throughout the country, and there were some interesting combinations. I can't remember the one in New Mexico, but this place made a burger with some strange topping that was supposed to be unbelievably good.
Here's a site that profiles some of the regions out there. It's amazing how many ways there are to prepare a hamburger.

And while it's pretty basic, if you're ever in Chicago, give the Billy Goat Tavern a try. Nothing special, but the ingredients are fresh and it's a pretty tasty burger. Go with the double cheeseburger, can't go wrong.

Ok since no one has brought it up yet...the McDonald located in Terminal 2 in Dubai. After a night layover out in Dubai at the Irish Village, catching the Big Mac and fries before flying for Kabul at 6 am hits the spot!~ Everyone who ever has transit through there has gotta admit that at 4 am-a BIG MAC- and fries does HIT that spot before sleeping in for 3 hours before entering KIA.
Now, if YOU want a REAL burger, got to go to my hometown, Sedalia Mo! Eddie's Drive In has the best burger. Hand cut, and hand grind in front of you before they pattied it up. With a couple of dashes of salt and pepper and a sprinkling of garlic, fried to YOUR specification, dressed to your liking. If you are adventurous, then its the Wheel In drive in for a GooberBurger, thats a burger with Mayo and peanut butter. Now thats good eating! Local favorites, people drive through my hometown on the way to Lake of the Ozark stop there from east and west just to taste the famous Goober Burger!
If you ain't had one, I highly recommend driving through Sedalia, MO. Just ask any local and they will direct you there. The girls are still there on roller skates taking orders car side. A slice of Americana if you ask me!
Five Guys all the way.
It's the only burger I will eat unless I'm cooking a burger on the grill at home.

It's a tie between McGuire's Irish Pub in Pensacola and Destin, FL, and Chan's Seaside Saloon in Destin, FL. In 'N Out isn't bad, for a fast food burger.
You know, for a sit down burger place, McGuire's is incredible.
For fast food? In 'N Out. Those who don't know will change their minds once they eat there.
Nothing is ever frozen (burgers/buns) so it's all fresh. Fresh heads of lettuce they wash/break apart right there, tomatoes washed/sliced there, potatos they peel, wash, cut and fry right there etc. Don't cook the burger till you order it so it comes out hot, and a SIMPLE menu.
Burger, cheese burger, double cheese burger etc, fries, and shakes. That's it.
There was also a little American bar out the gate and around the corner in Bahrain...can't remember the name. But a California burger with a tall Guinness...wow.

How dare they not put Five Guys on this list. Hands down the best. I laughed at all the hype about In and Out when I finally had one. It was certainly better than other burger chains, but Five Guys rules.
I haven't been to In and Out, so no comment on that, but the lack of Five Guys on here is sacrilege. Five Guys is awesome. Nuff said

It's amazing how many ways there are to prepare a hamburger.
http://www.americanprofile.com/article/4138.html
And while it's pretty basic, if you're ever in Chicago, give the Billy Goat Tavern a try. Nothing special, but the ingredients are fresh and it's a pretty tasty burger. Go with the double cheeseburger, can't go wrong.
You're right on the homemade.

Culver's is alright, for fast food.
And believe it or not, McDonald's used to actually make a servicable hamburger. Nothing special, but there was actual meat in there, and they toasted the bun. And they were cheap.
I grew up about a mile from the 2nd outlet Kroc opened up in Illinois, and it was still the original architecture with all stainless steel eating areas and no seats or drive thru until I was getting out of Jr High. After they started upgrading their facilities, it was all down hill from there.
McDonald's isn't really a fast food conglomerate anymore, it's a real estate company that happens to have restaurants on some prime property.

One of the worst chains ever was Arthur Treacher's Fish n' Chips. I went in there one time only, decided to get a couple of fish sandwiches because they looked good on the menu board, only to discover that the "cheese" wasn't the real, melted variety but some nasty cold shit they squeezed out of a grease gun contraption.

The John 3:16 on the bottom of the cups is a little ridiculous though.
Don't forget the fries as well. Family owned company so they can do what they want.
Five Guys is great...love In & Out... but neither of them will even touch the burgers at Nicky D's (http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/13/1412424/restaurant/Nicky-Ds-Crowley)!! There is only one and it's in Crowley, Texas.

I hear tale that is changing.....
Last summer when I was eating at In & Out I was talking to the manager about how much I missed them in Texas -- She said they don't expand quickly because everything is fresh so they have to have local distribution centers. She said they had JUST bought land in north Texas.
Come on Rangers...

Yes it is a family owned company unwilling and not needing to franchise. From what I remember, the mom runs the show.
It is a great business model to compare to what I call the "Starbucks" syndrom, where food/beverage vendors try to expand too rapidly.
The smell of an In n Out from a 1/4 mile away is awesome, even if you aren't hungry.

Five Guys Burgers are clearly inferior to In-in-Out Burgers. Just went to Five Guys for the first time two days ago. I have 3 Five Guys within 4.4 miles of my house (college town), so it must be popular.
The following was the deciding factor for me. When I asked for sautéed onions, aka grilled onions, they were diced. WHAT! It is not McDonalds or a sofrito for goodness sake! Sacrilege. Because of that I also question their freshness. DICED. *shudder*
Of course, burgers made on the home grill are the best.

Egg on a hamburger? WTF?
Massive burger with bacon, fried egg, tomato, lettuce, cheese, and the rest of the works is great. Here is the US you could have that at Stanich's in Portland, Oregon.

a pinch of kosher salt
Grill it over some wood chips I get form the below site and enjoy. Best burgers ever!!!

In Sacramento it's the famous Squeeze Inn Burger Joint otherwise In N Out for my area.
I've been to all chain places mentioned in the polls and have been in restaurants for a long time. Whether or not you like their burgers, you simply cannot find a better quality fast food chain burger in California for the price than In N Out. I happen to enjoy them very much but do not have a problem hitting a lesser burger joint if one isn't around.

Never heard of them like most here... excited to hear they are coming to Sacto and will definitely try! There's an In N Out off Truxel so it'll be interesting to see how the competition fares.

Were the diced onions actually grilled or were they raw? Because they have both.
If they were raw then I think you got a retard for either your cashier or the guy that made your burger.

They were grilled! I imagine their raw onions would have come diced too. (IMO if you dice onions, you are going to have a problem with freshness.)
Awful! Awful I tell you. Half fell out after I took my first bite. I did not dissect them, but they appeared suspicious. ;)

The Squeeze Inn.
Was there today after work for only the second time.
Burgers are really good, awesome bun, fresh produce.
Got the Squeeze with cheese.
Mayo, mustard, onions, pickles, meat, cheese bun. Burgers are huge, fries just ok.
The Girlfriend got the steak sammich. Like a steak sammich should be. Lots of onions, cheese. But not a cheese steak type sammich. It was really good.

No one has mentioned Cheeseburger in Paradise. I have not eaten there, but would assume Jimmy Buffet knows his burgers.
I went recently for a company luncheon. The burgers are really excellent, toppings are fresh and they have sweet potato chips. And they have a fresh strawberry lemonade that will make you sing.
Had the Cooking Channel on earlier, was watching Foodology. The host dude mentioned http://www.roadfood.com/ The most memorable local eateries along the highways and back roads of America

In Arizona (so far):
1.) Famous Dave's BBQ Devil's Spit burger.
Devil's Spit Burger $8.99
Slathered with Devil's Spit® BBQ Sauce and Topped with Pepper-Jack Cheese, Jalapeno Bacon and Hell Fire Pickle Chips.
2.) AJ's Fine Foods Grocery: Kobe Burger (from their outdoor patio grill).
Kobe Beef burger made to your fixins...with Boar's-Head brand cheese.
The scenery is ALWAYS good along with the GREAT burger.
3.) In-and-Out Burger, for the best (fresh) burger at fast food prices.

Chunky's in San Antonio. Saw it on Man v. Food and tried it out when I was in town. Awesome burgers. They have a "food challenge" callled the 4 horseman challenge. It is a 1 lb cheesburger with jalapenos, habeneros, serrano, and ghost peppers. Personally witnessed two people ruin their day trying to beat the challenge. The second only managed one bite before stationing himself by the soda fountain for the 1/2 hour I was there.

If by "new" you mean 20 years, well then...I guess.
I was eating Five Guys in D.C. in 1992, and I'm sure it hadn't just magically opened as soon as I got there.
I have yet to hear anybody who has had both burgers say that In and Out is best. They just mindlessly parrot the Left Coast party line, numb with disbelief that anything from outside of California is better. I agree that In and Out is far superior to any other burgers available out there, but FG is clearly even better. Wait till you try it to judge.

I meant new as in "to the West Coast". I've had 5 guys in St Louis. It was good, better that a lot of places. Maybe it's nostalgia or something else, but I'm still on the In-N-Out bandwagon and I don't think 5 guys is better.

Finally was able to visit The Vortex (http://www.thevortexbarandgrill.com/)in Atlanta (Little Fve Points) today at lunch, after hearing about it from locals and then seeing it on "Man Vs. Food".
For some reason, I was expecting to be disappointed, but it was solid. The Black and Blue Buffalo burger (or something like that) and sweet potato fries were top-notch...and the local IPA was respectable. Definitely recommended.

What the hell... just tried my first FGs.
Five Guys has opened all over Texas, so I've taken the opportunity to taste test. Meh... I think it is a copy of an In-N-Out. Nothing original other than the spicy fries. Oh, it has a pretty good hotdog, too. For my money and taste buds, In-N-Out wins hands down.

Good on her! You might want to tempt her with the FGs on 75 & Spring Creek.
I was goofing off around the web today. Saw that the folks at In-N-Out have 3 Dallas locations on their website, all listed as "coming soon" whatever that means. http://www.in-n-out.com/locations.asp search on TX. Funny, the original Firewheel Town Center location in Garland is not one of them. To answer your question SOTB, I don't have a clue of dates/time as of yet, did not read the article.
