View Full Version : What vehicle do you drive now and why?

Greetings Gentlemen,

Was perusing the thread on what your first car was (BTW, mine was a '70 Chevelle that was sweet!) and wanted to ask the following question, restating the title, of course:

What kind of car/truck do you drive and why?

With gas prices what they are, has this affected your decision on what to drive or have you remained true to your tastes? I am back and forth myself and trying to decide if I want a paid-off SUV or do I trade for a smaller car with better MPG (paid off or not)?

Figured that I might get some good guidance from the educated and experienced population here...military (especially SOF) personnel are usually more atune to looking at this logically, as well as smartly.

2004 Ducati Multistrada 1000
1973 Yamaha RD 350 (2-stroke)
1979 Vespa P200 (2-stroke, 225cc)

Haven't owned a car since 1998 (when I moved to D.C.) other than buying and selling a few here and there (usually old Rally car Volvo 2 doors).

Considering traffic in this area sucks (so I split lanes) and parking is non-existant, 2 wheels are the way to go.

We have an SUV and a full size extended cab pickup for the following reasons:

1. I need the truck to haul shit. I don't know how anyone can live without a truck.
2. I know they're both poor on gas mileage, but I look at it this way: would I rather my wife and kid get in an accident (car and/or deer) in a honda civic or a full size pickup? I consider the extra gas costs as insurance.
3. I have to have four wheel drive

I was going to buy one the new 4 door Jeeps that came out, but I went with a Honda Accord because of gas mileage and quality. The gas is ok the quality sucks ass, should have bought Toyota

When I finally do move out of here and back to the country then I'm going to find me a 1970's Toyota FJ-55 (the four door wagon version of the popular FJ-40 Jeep-style Landcruiser).

Drive or own? In order of appearance in the drive way...

1997 Chev Suburban... after our Ford Explorer was totaled after being rear-ended by a tractor trailer. The whole family walked away... but HH6 wanted something bigger..... sucky gas mileage, but I used it this fall to pull limbs off a tree in the front yard w/o using a chain saw.... son drives for school..

2000 Kia Sportage..... commuting car for me. fair gas mileage. Has survived one deer attack and being laywayed off the road by the Squirrel Auxiliary of the Deer Resistance Movement.... DD current drives for school and work bringing it home to get filled up and for maint...

2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT.... my car for work and around town when the kids aren't driving it. 26-29 MPG

2007 Honda Odyssey... HH6's car. Bought it after DMIL passed this spring. Need it to all the dogs since we inheirited mom's. Comfortable as hell and good milage, will hold almost as much as a PU....

Dodge Ram p/u. Not only because we got 15" of snow last night. Yesterday after the storm started I lost the rear drive shaft. U-joint busted. I pulled the driveshaft off and drove home on the front wheels. 45 miles in the blizzard. Sure the mileage sucks, but if I was driving a Corolla I'd still be sitting on the side of the road waiting for AAA.

1995 Toyota Tacoma V-6 4X4. Paid for. Runs great. Awesome in the snow. Men drive truck's, that's what we do. I can put stuff in it. Bucket seats, so there can NEVER be more than one person with me. Good MPG. Very dependable. Good looking body style.

I have a 2007 Jeep Wrangler....why? Because I wanted one when I got back from downrange, and I can take the top down in the summer. Also, Blacksburg has a great public transportation system, so I don't drive it more than 10 miles a week which helps with the gas.

4 December 2007, 13:00
2007 Wrangler. Gas mileage is OK , but since it's a soft top, little too loud for a long trip.

Wife drives an 05 tiburon. Gets horrible gas miles, but she only drives about 5 miles a day anyway.

4 December 2007, 13:02
2001 Isuzu Rodeo. Decent amount of power and storage space, and can drive through damn near anything - my twins and I do a lot of hiking/backpacking in the mountains and I can help pull people out of mud, snow, water, whatever (after we all pile out first and laugh at them for driving a compact through mud up to their doors :D ). I love my car.
Edit: And I can fit it into compact parking spaces!

Gas mileage isn't great, but we have a 500 gal tank on the ranch which we use for all vehicles, so gas prices at the pump don't really affect me.

2003 Nissan Xterra 4x4. We love this vehicle. Wanted something with 4x4 for the wife to drive when it snows and other bad weather. Has 45k miles and has never been to the shop once.

2005 Toyota Camry. Great car, great on gas, great resale value. If you are looking for a car, Toyota is the best to go with.

2007 Tundra Crewmax 5.4L...I like to drive places where 4WD comes in handy, and the bed is good for the ATV, man stuff and perfect for avoiding fights with the Mrs. over blood, scales, and feathers in the vehicle. I work at home when not travelling, so gas mileage is not the primary concern.

2006 Volvo S60 for the Mrs. Nice ride, reasonable gas economy and enough size to transport the kids around as needed. Plus I made the mistake of getting her a Volvo a few years back and she has bought into the whole "Volvo for Life" cult.

Comfy enough for me and the kids (My wife hates it and always wants to take her car... it's a control thing  )
But more importantly, it's small enough that it fits into spaces most other cars can't.
That makes a huge difference parking in the city.

Me- 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan; because it's paid for and uses less gas than the Chevy.

Wife- 2005 Tahoe; because it is the vehicle we use to tow all of our ditbikes out to the trails and ORV parks (CRF250, TTR-125L, PW-80, CRF50) and the only vehicle I want my wife and 3 sons driving over Snoqualmie Pass in the winter with.

I have no idea what you're talking about "dudes with big trucks are compensating". :D

In other news, I drive a 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 quad cab, long bed, Cummins inline 6, manual transmission. I've always wanted a diesel truck, it was only $600 more than the 2500, and I love driving it.

OH no I feel so inadequate now. LOLOL :p

I had some guy jump be about the size of my truck, I asked him about fuel economy of his "vehicle", then showed him my fuel economy gauge in the truck. I got the last laugh.

Funny thing my big truck gets better fuel economy than my ranger. The reason for the excursion is to pull trailers cross country and for travel. It's best fuel economy is around 85 mph and with plenty of pep to accelerate. It can haul Six people with comfort, 8 cozy and with gear. It can also haul 3/4 ton of 4 by 8 sheets of plywood/drywall inside and pull more than I want too. last big trip, I fueled up 100 mile East of Denver, drove to Idaho border Via Salt lake city before needing to refuel (yep big fuel tank).

The excursion is basically a superduty. My last superduty, really demonstrated why a big truck is nice, I had a DUI in a marqui decide to drive through my driver's door. In a small truck or car, I probably would not be typing this post.

Most days an Eddie Bauer Explorer - b/c I decided I had to have one when I rented one while my Z28 was in the shop after an accident. I immediately fell in love with the comfort, ability to see over other vehicles, versitility in hauling most things, not too short, not too long, and for an SUV it gets acceptable gas mileage.

A Silverado, extended cab, short bed when needed to haul things that I can't or don't want to haul in the Explorer.

Some days a Z28 6-speed b/c I need to let off a little steam or just need a thrill. (Girls just wanna have fun.....that's all they really want)

-Why: Because I was "too agressive in the turret." WTF?
-How I like it: Slow, poor gas mileage, and breaks down quite a bit due to Afghan "roads".

-Sitting in my garage and paid off: 1998 Acura Integra with lots of bolt ons to make it go faster and sound annoying.
-Why: Because I got it right after high school.
-How I like it: It's fun, but getting old.

-What I will be putting in my garage soon: 2008 Infinity G37 Sport 6MT
-Why: Because it is shiny and goes very, very fast. :D (I spent the money from my first tour and bought a house, so I'm ok with blowing most of this deployment's income on a car.)

'06 Dodge Ram 2500 Megacab, 4x4, 5.9 Cummins turbodiesel. I went with the automatic b/c I rarely haul anything REALLY heavy, don't need the granny gear, and the tow/haul function works very well.
WHY- I was raised with pickups and other 4x4s over seas, first vehicle statside was a 1985 Dodge Ram van (date rape style) with shaggy seat covers.
First truck I bought was a '90 Chevy 1500, 5.7 2wd. Great truck, but I always wanted 4x4.
After Iraq, I picked up an F250, crew cab, 7.3 diesel. Loved it. Hit some ice on an overpass bridge in OR and rolled it off the highway. Totalled the rig but it saved my life - super strong B-pillar.
Replacement, the Megacab.
WHY- It was out the door at what the Fords start at.
I get 16-17 mpg in town, and up to 21 hwy (no load), 13mpg pulling my trailer. I'll never own another gas truck!

1995 Ford F-150XLT. Had it for years, still in excellent condition, runs superbly . Next ground vehicle's going to be something a bit larger (gravitating towards the 250/350 series), with full-sized crew cab and a Diesel engine. I need the carrying capacity and that need is only going to get bigger.

Others regularly operated all have wings.

Me: 2004 Dodge 1500- why? Had a Dakota before this and wanted/needed a bigger P/U that could carry plywood/drywall not to mention leg room. I have a 4 door Dodge P/U on the wish list right now since we have a granddaughter now:D

CINC: 04 Honda Accord- her 3rd- the car is great with good MPG and makes her happy on road trips- she hates the Dodge b/c the seats don't recline. She'll be able to climb in back of the Dodge and lay down onthe seat.

#! daughter- Pontiac Sunfire- b/c it was what I could afford it after she totalled her Mazda

#2 daughter Honda Civic- tricked out for road rally- great deal- belonged to a Soldier that suddenly had a kid 9 months after "R&R" leave- runs like a scalded freakin' dog!!:D

02 Nissan Pathfinder. Almost got a pickup, but decided with all the rain in the PNW, an SUV would probably be better. 4WD when it's needed, plenty of room for gear and fishing junk, and drives sweet for an SUV.

The boss drives a 99 Accord. I tell her it's because she's Asian, and Asian chicks only drive Honda's. :D

I still miss my 83 Jeep CJ-7 every day though... :(

No way that's a chick's car. Where would you put the car seat in that thing.
Woman are practical creatures who need vehicles with cargo space.

I drive a 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara.

I bought my first one new in 2000 or 2001. I wanted a 4X4 with a V6 & ABS, Suzuki was in my price range. Never had a problem with it.

When it was 5 years old Suzuki offered me a great deal on my trade & decent terms for my 2006.

I need a 4WD vehicle due to my job, weather can't get in the way of me getting to work.

'06 Beemer, 325xi, red. Why, because it handles like a dream.

Fantasy car would be a '57-62 Vette, red with white coves. Perfect for traveling RT 66, with a dog-eared copy of Kerouac's, On The Road, and Brubeck's, Take Five on the radio. I've always been facinated with that era.

Right now it's M1151, IMG or a Brad, but I don't really get to drive

At home:
2000 GMC Sierra 1500 Ext Cab SB Z-71: Because I am a hick from the sticks and I can. Actually it's paid off and I had it up North where 4X4 was needed, now the bed gets the most use unless I take the kid fishing.
2001 Expedition Eddie Bauer for HH6: Again live up North, now it moves all the crap for my youngest.

Going to upgrade to a crew cab when I get home I think. I don't worry about gas mileage too much, why else am I here stealing oil.:D

1998 Ford Ranger 4X4. Why? It's simple, it's not too bad on gas, its 4WD which is good in Nebraska, and it's paid for.

Me: '06 Subaru Impreza.

Why: Cheap deal on the lease, good gas mileage, fast for a four banger.

Wife: '06 Subaru Outback Wagon.

Why: Small enough for her to not feel like it is an oversized car, big enough to haul stuff, and even though she looked hot in the "G" the girls were a little cramped in the back.

Though today in the snow I took the scooter...the Duc has too much torque at the rear wheel, it's a pain to ride it in the rain without it spinning out all over the place.

07 Subaru Impreza (non-turbo) runs on regular and gets 25-32 mpg, also fits my snowboard and sports gear and its all wheel drive so its great in the snow.
1929 Ford Tudor (everyone needs something to tool around with)
2004 Honda Shaddow 1100c (52+/- mpg, as long as its not snowing, heavy rain or below 40º, I am on the Bike)

Not certain about that, but I do think that every Miata comes with one standard.

When I came back from my Korea tour flush with cash I actually entertained the idea of a Miata (this would have been 91-92 time frame). It was actually a fun car to drive - very go-cart like, however it was just gay.

So I went with a 1964 1/2 Mustang Convertible with a 289 instead.

Me, An 07 Toyota Tundra Double Cab, Why, I lease it through my company and got a great lease deal and I love Toyotas: 18 mpg. It also doubles as a backup-horsetrailer-puller truck (Thats red neck for "spare"). My Frau drives a Ford F250 Crew Cab Shortbed as the primary-horse-trailer-puller truck 1.5 gallons per mile (And Diesel to boot!). Everytime she fills it up my credit rating drops. It is safe though and pulls like a tractor. I favor safety and reliability over gas mileage for her when she has the equine out on the road.

Wife: '06 Dodge Charger - Better mileage than the truck, basically same motor, 3.5L HO. It looks sharp, has 4 doors for the kiddie, has 250 HP so it goes decent and is fun to drive. This was one of those buys where I come home with a new truck and SHE says, "What about me?" Hahaha
