From memory you need at least an 8/3 on the Pulheems system(I am pretty sure we don't use the old 20/20 system). Colour perception(again from memory) would be around 2.

I am guessing you are an Australian citizen?

Try www.defence.gov.au
That will have most info on about Direct entry Cdo. They should have it upgraded soon so you can speak directly to a recruiter online.

T, did they downgrade the requirement for Cdo CP? It used to be CP1 no exceptions due to the demo quals. In fact used to be all SPEC Wing Cse's were CP1 as well.

Glasses were OK provided they were not coke bottle bottoms and no bifoculs.

Thanks, yes I am an Australian citizen but I am currently living in the UK, will I have problems having my background checked? There was something about having a checkable background for the last 10 years on the job profile.

Relax. You will be fine. Unless you were hanging with AQ plotting the next bombing of the tube you will be fine of the background check.

If you eyes are correctable to 20/20(or equivalent) you will pass the medical in terms of vision. Last I heard they were paying for lasik if you wanted it (after you qualled) and had no problems with you getting it done yourself if you wanted to choose your own doc and pay out of pocket. Call recruiting to get the most current answer on laser surgery, but they can't test for it if its done right anwyay.

You have to be aware Defence bans the use of one type of laser surgery- LASIK or LASEK, I can't quite remember- supposedly because one of them prevents the eye focusing on small close images, such as the holosight attached to the GLA or Aimpoints.

... right. I'm know Defence bans one of two types of laser surgery. I mentioned this because it is relevant information for Gez6. Which is why I posted it. It is now up to Gez to find out which one instead of just going out and getting it done on his own bat. Which could potentially save him a few dollars and a career cut off at the knees.

There are more than 2 types of laser eye surgery. So clearly you don't know.

Guessing and rumour does no-one any favours. If you can't add to what has been posted, then why make something up?

The CP gradings were reviewed last year as far as I am aware. I am unsure of what changes were made to them once the recommendations had been made.

My info came from a good buddy who went to IV. He was only CP2. As for the direct entry method, I would have thought it would have been the same standard?

Well it should all be the same standard but mate........ :D

I did witness a memorable moment when a guy who had slipped through the cracks on CP grading grabbed a roll of Det Cord instead of Fuse Instantaneous as he was unable to differentiate between the two colours. Luckily someone else picked it up or else we may have had a contact lane with some diasterous results. I do believe Det Cord is green now?

Starlight....are you monitering this and if so, do you know the answer about CP requirements? (Since you stayed in longer than me.)

AJ,
Aus Det cord was/is red(now going tan I think) and FBT is black isn't it? If so CP 2 should still be able to decipher Red/Green colours? Maybe the guy you know was of a lesser rating?

Det Cord was a almost pinkish red and smooth outer layer. FBT is indeed and always has been black, but Fuse Instantaneous was a darker red and had a coarse outer layer.

FBT and FI are two distinctly different things. FI was/is used for demos where noise, smoke and a nice discreet flash will impress the girls watching. As it's name suggests, there is an instantaneous result when it is initiated unlike FBT which should burn around 32 sec for 30 cm. It is essentially the same construction as DC but instead of plastique core it is a gun powder core. Used to be black powder back in the day and still could be. It's used on movies and in contact lanes etc for simulations.

We used to use it in booby trapping excercises to simulate the explosion when you cocked up a delousing drill! Also used it in contact lanes to simulate battlefield noise etc. You can lay across it and when it goes off you would probably end up with a nasty scorch mark....imagine if it was a strung line of DC instead ;)

The lad was returned to a Rifle Coy!

AJ

Det cord comes in a range of colours. The Army mainly use green. FBT is also green, with a major point to note. It has yellow dashes along the entire length of the fuse. The FI, I have used was a tanish colour from memory. I haven't seen black used at all, but I have only been in since 2002...In this Army anyway.

AJ, the DS solution is that CP2 is a go.
One thing he did mention though is that any past orthopedic surgery is now an exclusion, due to the high drop out rates encountered with people who have had it.
No word on LASIK yet, however I do know several people who have had it done privately, to keep it 'off the books'.
Will post the update on eye surgery when I get it.

Cheers, and stay safe.

FYI, CP2 is only only for the Beret support Eg: Sigs or Boaties. If you want to be a shooter you have to be CP1 unfortunately. I was a SF Sig in Perth, i was also CP2 so i couldn't be a shooter which was a real bummer. But we still did everything regardless of CP class, its just a positional requirement.

Matter of a fact, some of the best snipers in the Army are colour Blind, go figure.

Unless things have changed, i got out december 06.

It is a well documented fact that CP1 has disadvantages in certain jobs. Those who live life sans certain spectrum accuity rely more on movement, shape and texture recognition software in the brain. Their eye is not easily fooled by cam cream and doesn't always lock onto the shine or lack thereof.

It's not a stretch at all to see snipers less than CP1 performing better overall than a CP1 operator. They may not even have to be the better shot to perform well considering shooting is but one part of a snipers bag of tricks..... but the reality is they still can not see as well if they are not CP1.

The absolute best snipers are the patient ones :p

Actually mate, it's some of your posts that are annoying...not Norts'.

Someone with extensive SF experience should be able to show a bit more maturity then you have been doing in some of your posts.

When anyone joins a new group of people, it's preferred they feel their way and not tell everyone how great they are straight off the bat. A few of us here know each other personally, so a little more tact would be preferred on your part.
